The Sun reports today that the Coronation Street sponsored float at this year's Manchester pride will feature some of the Corrie cast dressed up as 'gay icon' Hilda Ogden.Elsie Tanner, Liz McDonald as gay icons, yes, and many more besides. But Hilda?
Anyway, who would you say Corrie's greatest gay icon was or currently is - and you can include any of the characters, cast, writers or behind the scenes people too.

There's going to be a few cast, yes, but it will mostly be the largely anonymous Corrie crew members who will populate the float.
The studio has been drumming up support for it at Stage One for a few months now.
I think that's a good thing. It'll be nice for the crew to get some applause and appreciation for the work they do backstage.
I say Sophie and Sian, 2.0 version. love them!
I can't see Hilda as a gay icon myself. Prolly the greatest gay icon is Elsie Tanner. Out of the current cast I would say Liz, Rita and Deirdre.
Fred and Blanche were & still are both hugely popular in the gay community.
Ironically, Sean isn't. Almost all the gay men I know find him an acute embarrassment.
Guess what we're saying is that 'Gays' are just regular folks then; Blanche, Fred, Hilda, Elsie, Bette, Liz, Rita, are all popular with many viewers, past and present.
Sean, poor Sean, disliked my so many.
I would say that for glamour and lifestyle, Elsie, Rita, and Bet.
For Camp value and great lines, Hilda, Vera, and Janice
For bitchiness, Ena and Annie Walker.

Carla Connor is pretty damn fabulous.
As a young gay man, I don't think of Sean as much of an icon at all. Then again, I'm not so keen on anyone with bleached blonde hair.
I love Mary. She is fabulously misunderstood and entwined in a painful unrequited desire for Norris. I think that's something the "gay community" (it's not like we hold conferences and stay away from straight people) can relate to.
Gay icons tend to epitomise and embrace campness in a classy or respectable way—something I think is only acheived by Julie and Norris.
Gay icon? I agree with above: has to be Bet Lynch. Then Liz comes in a distant second...
I wonder how Hilda and others feel about being a gay icon. I for one, and likely many others, would not be too thrilled.
I doubt she minds.
Jean Alexander is an actor, and to be well-known and appreciated by the public is just that.
I don't know how active the actress is these days, but I would imagine that to be fondly remembered for a role that ended over 20 years ago can't be a bad thing surely!
