Corrie's Kelly to leave the Street

Aww, this is sad news to this Corrie fan. Just when we were singing her praises and hoping for more of Corrie's Kelly on the telly, actress Tupele Dorgu reveals she's leaving Coronation Street after five years.

The official Corrie site reports that Tupele will leave the cobbles when her current contract ends early next year. Her character Kelly will find herself caught up in factory politics before her exit, when she catches the eye of the new Nick Tilsley.

Speaking about her decision to leave the show, Tupele said: "I feel privileged to have been part of such an iconic show for five years and I am grateful to everyone at Coronation Street for the opportunities I have been given. I have however decided to leave the show and am very excited about seeking new challenges and opportunities within the industry."

This character was under-used! The Corrie writers are bringing in all sorts of new characters when there's plenty of side characters who could be given fresh storylines! They should get rid of the Peacocks, the Websters, the Connors and write meatier stories exploring the side characters more.

Back to Kelly: Too bad! But what a way to go...catching the eye of the resident hunk!

I think this was inevitable. Kelly has been in the show for five years but only a glorified extra for the last four. Such a waste of a terrific character. The factory just won't be the same without her.

I am really sorry that Kelly is going and agree that she was totally under used, what a waste of a great comic (and rather funny/bitchy) character. I really dont understand the powers that be in Corrie in that we get Michelle constantly in our faces and there will soon be yet another ongoing angst driven story with Becky acting OTT and yet Kelly has never really been explored. What about her prison days with Becky? Its a crying shame.

Ena's Hairnet,

Kelly's acting is OTT as well

I agree she was vastly under-used as a character. Corrie's loss on this one.

What a shame, although not a surprise since Corrie have been driving her out of the show for the past couple of years. It is ironic that Becky started out as her friend, and now she dominates the show! I would have rather had a Kelly storyline than more Becky... Best of luck to Tupele, I hope she goes on to good roles.

Anonymous - Kelly may be a bit OTT but she is in it so briefly, just a factory or pub scene usually but Becky we get dominating almost whole episodes with one dramatic storyline after another, so I dont think you really can compare them. i wish Tupele good luck also, I know she has recently got married so perhaps it will give her some time to spend with her new husband.

From a professional point it's the right move for Tupele to make. She didn't have a real future in Corrie unless she wasn't ambitious and was happy being a glorified extra.

I do agree that Becky is in everything and it's just far too much at the mo.

Corrie has some great characters that could be used more. Look at Norris, Ken, Natasha and what about a wedding for Bill and his fabulous girlfriend Pam.

I wish Tupele well and if she is a good actress, it will come out somewhere else.

Good riddance to bad acting.

As moderator, I do remove spam comments and those which attack the actors. Characters are fictional and up for fair criticism.

She could do a lot worse than follow Suranne Jones' or Sarah Hardcastle's example.

Kelly always felt like a bit of a stock character; meant to only support storylines. It's a shame really, because considering the past we did know, they could've done almost anything with her.
