Coronation Street episodes review, Friday 13 July 2018
Several big stories over these two episodes on Friday evening.
First the football. To help new viewers Tyrone explained to Abi why he had looked after Jack for three months before doing the right thing and handing him over to his real father Kevin. In a touching scene Kevin returned from the hospital (having told Jack he has lost a foot and a part of his leg to sepsis) and finds his football boots. Kevin picks them up and sits down on the sofa knowing that his son will never again be easily able to participate in his favourite activity. (And a reminder to all of you, like Sophie who look after a child who gets a graze, go and wash it properly or like Sophie you will feel forever responsible).
Sally, Brian, Sophie, Tyrone, Yasmeen, Geoff, Chesney and Gemma form a task force to raise money for Jack to help him face his future, foreboding a number of different fund raising activities over coming weeks. Ty wants to climb Everest!
Next up are the salon wars where Maria having been sacked opens the puntastic "A Cut Above" in her flat above Audrey's salon. Matters reach a head when Audrey catches Gail having a cheap hairdo and pulls out the foils leaving Gail with a very curly thatch. All out war involves Maria putting up a notice on Audrey's front door, which Audrey then arranges for David to cover over with a cut price offer for the salon (see above)! When Maria collects her training head from the salon she also tries to take some pintail combs - worth about £3 - which Audrey insists are hers! Then Maria tries to head hunt Emma, who decides to stay with Audrey. It ends with Maria giving notice on the tenancy of the flat and Audrey telling her she has two weeks to move out. The problem I have with this storyline is that some years ago I am sure David acquired ownership of the salon - and I thought it was still his. Anyone else remember that?
Kayla (having shamelessly taken Craig to bed on Tuesday) is twisting him around her little finger and pops back from a meal in the Bistro (using keys she has stolen from him) to turn on the gas in the flat whilst they were out. Luckily Rana smells it when she and Kate return - but of course the discovery unbalances Craig's brain as he knows he turned it all off (see the picture). Given that even her mother does not believe that Neil is innocent and it is clear that Kayla is not stupid (and can afford a car on her earnings at Speed Dahl) one wonders how Neil has managed to deceive her.
Sean is homeless and living in Kirk's discarded tent. He is cleaning his teeth in the Rovers where he is once again gainfully employed after stealing into the vacancy created by Liz's sacking. He assures Fiz he has a proper place to live.
At the factory it is time to deliver the 4000 unit order. Only the customer confirms that they only wanted 1000. Alya has borrowed money to buy the fabric and the team have been working overtime plus a bonus at the end of the month. Except that she has only sold 1000 units and is pretty sure someone hacked the order.
As part of the child residency discussions over Susie Eva is looking for "mumsy" clothes because her wardrobe is "too pink for an adult". Carla on behalf of Johnny is playing a far more dangerous game, using her feminine wiles to get Peter onside for Team Connor (Peter thinks she wants him back and does not deny to Toyah that they are back together, Carla sort of does not deny it to Roy either). So Carla enlists Peter to look for evidence to help the Connor case. Peter knows exactly what is needed, wanders into the Rovers unchallenged and obtains the birth certificate which shows the alleged mother (Jackie) and himself as father, proof that Eva is not a fit mother (see above). Team Connor are ecstatic and so far it has not cost Carla a trip to the bedroom.
Chesney is being nasty to Gemma picking on her at work and arguing with her at other times. Cathy reckons Chesney fancies Gemma. The big surprise is the sudden re-appearance of Henry (above) initially on phone calls and text messages and then on the Street. Gemma's welcome is not encouraging, but as he walks away he sees that the Rovers is up for sale.
The main story running through these two episodes is Duncan having heard that his charity has been awarded £40k by the Council charity puts on the screws to get his hands on it. He tells Sally he needs the money urgently as he has to pay today for some equipment at the auction. She pulls rank on the council officials and they use these modern internet, webby systems to make an instant payment - which apparently goes direct to hunky Duncan's personal bank account and not a charity bank account. When Steve and Tim (who has remarked repeatedly on the fishy smell hanging around Duncan) break into Duncan's office they find the place is empty. The council officials have been onto the bank. The money has gone and cannot be traced (you know I reckon there are good reasons for writing cheques and having the power to stop them). Jeanette is head of council finance and agrees to report it to the police - but so many rules have been broken that Sally initially goes to the police and hand herself in. Tim talks her round but she has to stand down as Mayor.

Had to mute the sound when the Connors were talking about Eva being an unfit mother and the rest. They were so smug, self righteous and downright nasty. It seems poor Jenny is going to get it for trying to be the voice of reason.
