And now she's turned up tonight as Gloria Price. Mum to St Ella and grandma of Leanne and Eva.
Gloria's staggered back from Spain to lie low in Weatherfield. Stella's reaction wasn't what she was expecting - but never mind that. What did you think of Gloria Price turning up in Coronation Street tonight and Sue Johnston's first episode as Gloria?

I loved her. Her remarks to Rita and Eileen were very witty. She could be a cross between Elsie and Blanche. There could also be some good comedy between Gloria and Sean (give him something to do). I do hope Gloria sticks around for a while.

So far, so good. I found it very interesting that her first street resident-meeting was Ken, and then the next scene was with Betty's photo between her and Stella... Was that on purpose to bring her into the historical fold, I wonder? I still just haven't warmed up to Stella, so it will be interesting for me to see if Gloria can help me overcome that!
Brilliant Bloody brilliant! Humpty Dumpty says a cross between Elsie and Blanche. Not sure about Elsie but most definitely a worthy successor to Blanche Hunt who was a bit of a man mad woman in her day, after all!

I love Gloria too! She fits right in at the Rovers and I really enjoyed her scenes with the other characters. I can't wait to see more of her, especially behind the bar.
The cracks are even more apparent in Sunita and Karl's relationship now. I knew it wouldn't take long! My bet is that Karl is back with Stella before Christmas.
Frosty is going to disagree. I thought her a silly selfish rude old cow without the delivery of Blanche or the loveableness of Sylvia and that stupid wig!
I also cannot get my head around her time line - Eva knew her and she knew Karl so she must have been around so WHAT IS this sob story that St Ella had to give up her kid? Doesnt make sense,
I guess that Gloria has always been around in St Ella's life in one way or another, just not recently, and so why wouldn't she know Karl and her grandaughter Eva? St Ella abandoning Leannne as a baby doesn't imply that she wasn't, I don't get that argument Frosty. It only implies that Gloria was a useless mother back in the day, and so couldn't be turned to. And I think that is her back story, a flighty hippy, all a bit 'love n free' and no solidity.
I have to say that I have been soooo looking to Gloria's arrival that I think I was too hyped and was a bit underwhelmed. But Im sure she's going to fit in well, and as Sue is re-locating to Manchester in real life, I hope we can expect Gloria to settle in and be around for the some time to come.
I don't see any contradiction either. Stella ran off to marry Les when she was very young - I'm seeing Gloria as a freewheeling, hippy mum, and Stella wanting some stability. Think Edina and Saffy from Ab Fab. She finds herself married to the first man who says he loves her, and then (yikes!), he turns out to be Les Battersby. Stella leaves and strikes out on her own.
In all this Gloria is very hands off, but when Stella becomes pregnant again with Eva, she becomes more involved (not least because she has lost one grandchild to Les and his mum). She dips in and out of their lives, showering them with presents and flattery, then disappearing off to Spain. As a result she gets to see Karl for a week or two at a time, where he turns on the charm, and completely missing out on his dalliances with other women.
Gloria seems like she'll be a lot of fun, and Sue Johnston is of course an amazing actress, capable of comedy and drama. (She'll always be Our Sheila to me though).
Two thumbs up. I haven't enjoyed an episode so much in ages.
Humpty, I think it was Joe Turner that wrote the episode. Will have to check again when i get home.
I thought she was cringemaking actually, especially with that scene in the back where she dragged Karl in, totally oblivious to her daughter's feelings. No need to be sarcastic to Rita either when she had just met her.
She was a bitch to Rita for absolutely no reason - so I don't like her.

And if she's equally rude to Emily and Audrey - then I'll really hate her. Almost as much as I hate her milquetoast daughter with the raspy voice and the "I just sucked on a lemon" facial expression. Why is Stella always beige?? Her hair, her clothes, her make-up ... always beige and bland.

I think that its more than possible that Gloria would know Eva and have seen her grow up however her visits would be few and far between. Her actions last night show that she causes chaos whenever she visits and obviously cant be relied on whenever a man shows her interest- Micky
What parent goes completely against the wishes of their adult offspring in relationship issues? A nay from me, so far, although the speedy dissing of Rita and Sunita and the attempt to patch things with Karl are writing issues, not acting. Sorry, but no reasonable adult would jump in without looking. Either Gloria's cartoonish (boo), ridiculous (boo), stupid (seriously?), or the writers microwaved a bland frozen dinner to quickly slap something on the table instead of slow roasting a meal, filling the house with delectable smells that tempt and tease and finally bring us to the table knowing we'll leave satisfied.
