Corrie Review - Thursday 1 December 2011

Writer: Debbie Oates
Director: Tony Prescott

Sian has been up late working on her college coursework and has fallen asleep on the sofa. Sally tells her that she needs to sleep because she'll make herself ill but Sian is determined to finish it as soon as possible.

The nativity organised by Leanne and Sunita is underway and Simon has learnt a song that would suit the innkeeper for the audition, taught to him by Deirdre, but he won't tell Leanne or Sunita what it is. Kylie overhears when she exits to shop to find Sunita to pay for some biscuits. She's interested in the nativity and with Max due to start at the primary school she thinks it would be beneficial for him. Sunita agrees but Simon says that he can't be the innkeeper, he has his heart set on it.

In Frank's factory, Sally is being obsessively clean by getting Becky to bleach the mugs clean. Frank and Anne tell Sally that they want her at the meeting as it was due to her vision that they got this contract. When Laydon arrives Sally explains how they will be handle the contract via the sub contracting with smaller firms. Due to her vision and Frank and Anne's assurances Laydon is impressed and is on the verge of signing the contract. Frank tells her how impressed he is with her.

Amber asks Sophie if she fancies going to the cinema that evening, in a way of apologising for the previous night but a phone call from Arj where Amber describes Sophie as her Dad's "shop girl" leads her to quietly leave the shop. When Dev comes back to the shop he mentions that he has 'eyes and ears' that aren't his and Amber works out that Sophie must have told him. Dev (very badly) lies and says she didn't tell him but Amber walks out of the shop leaving Dev to hold the fort.

Eva and Nick have spent the night together and she persuades him to re-instate her to bar manager. Nick tells Matt that they are short staffed, so Matt decides that it would be a career move for Tina and volunteers her for the job. Nick tells him that he'll give her an interview the next day.

David and Kylie are with Max by the salon. Max spots Becky and runs up to her and tells her about the nativity auditions. Tactfully Becky tells him that she can't make it but that he's going with his Mum and that she needs to give him a high five before starting his audition for good luck. As he heads off with Kylie and David, Becky manages to smile.

Stella and Karl have invited Lloyd for tea and they won't take no for an answer. He arrives to find a glammed up Tina behind the bar, due to the fact that all her work tops are in the wash. Stella and Karl try to persuade Lloyd to have his pint on the house as Matt arrives to tell her about the Bistro. Tina isn't overly impressed as she's happy with her job at the Rovers. In the back room Stella, Lloyd and Karl have finished their food. Karl is still complaining about Stella buying the expensive shoes, much to Lloyd's amusement who declares it's time that he gets off. Stella tries to persuade him to stay hoping it's not her and Karl's bickering that put him off but Lloyd comments that the bickering is nice as it shows they're close.

Sophie has given Sian a scarf for a present and Sian has virtually finished her assignment. Sophie asks her if they can go away at the weekend but Sian is too pre-occupied. Sophie's phone rings and it's Amber. As she leans to grab it, Sian's poorly placed glass of water tips on the laptop and the screen goes funny before it goes off. Sian goes utterly mad at Sophie, more concerned that she's lost her assignment than the fact that her laptop is ruined (strange girl?) and she storms out to try and find someone to fix it. She fails and screams at Sophie in the shop that she has to start it all over again.

Nick and Eva are shamlessly flirting in the bar when they caught by Gail who has arrived to help. She soon guesses what has been happening and Nick tells Eva that she will soon warm to the situation.

At the auditions, Leanne is horrified as Simon's song turns out to be a Cilla Black song. As Sunita tries hard not to burst out laughing, Leanne claims she's going to kill Deirdre. Aadi and Asha are fighting about who will audition first out of the two of them but Sunita tells them that it is Asha first but that it's Max on next. He gets Kylie to give him his lucky high five. Becky sneaks into the back and is noticed by David. Becky tells Kylie that he won't see her and Kylie tells her it is alright and she can can stay and watch. Simon gets a round of applause for his Cilla Black song. Max starts singing Little Donkey as David enthusiastically encourages him. Faye, aka The Devil Child says that if her Mum had done that she'd have died of shame but David ignores her too busy watching Max to notice. Becky is close to tears watching him. Becky tells Kylie that she will feel proud of her son and true to her word she make her exit before Max comes running over to Kylie.

Amber is not happy with Sophie and tells her that she knows that she told Dev about Arj being at the flat, Like Dev before her, Sophie denies all knowledge but Amber sees through her lies. Sophie storms out of the show pusued by Amber, who demands to know what is wrong with her. Choking back the tears Sophie admits that she is jealous of Arj and Amber realises that Sophie has a crush on her. Sophie then declares that she is in love with Amber, who tells her that she is straight and not interested and that she needs to grow up.

Highlights

Simon singing Cilla Black.
Sunita: "Is that....?"
Leanne: "Cilla Black. Yeah. I'm gonna kill Deirdre."

Nick: "Don't worry, she'll come around eventually. She just needs a bit of steering."
Eva: "What, like a massive oil tanker?"

Lowlights

Sian: "Saaaaaaaaawphie."
Sophie: "Siiiiiiiiiaaaan."

The whole storyline of Sian's coursework - awful. When you're doing an important assignment, you back it up. And when Sophie spilled the water on it, any reputable computer shop can plug the hard drive into a 'caddy' and recover everything.
Dev's rubbish lying. He could have at least kept a straight face!

Great updates! I too found the Sophie/Sian story odd and tiresome, a plot device to get them wed (or not) quickly. And on an entirely different subject I must say I chuckled at some of Eva and Nick's lines about Gail and her interfering!

I've got mixed feelings about Faye. Like many very young British TV actors, she's not that good - because they're only allowed a set number of hours off school to train. Unlike the American kids who we might think are precocious but are generally better actors IMO. So is her annoying presentation to do with the actress or the character? Corrie could do much more with this story, showing the problems adopted children have in settling into new families, wanting to sabotage their own happiness and refusing to conform because they fear a loss of identity. None of this is coming out; she just looks like a horrible child. Anna needs to see the social worker and have this conversation so we can see a different side to Faye - if she has one. Hopefully, no-one would be put off adoption because of this story line.

I think there is huge character development potential in what Humpty Dumpty has written about genuine challenges that adopted children face, particularly about their identity. Right now, she's a replacement for David in the devil-child department and she's too new for it to be anything but annoying.

Really enjoying the updates - thanks for posting them!

If Phil Collinson thinks he is promoting sympathy for teenage lesbians then he needs his head tested with these two, their pathetic behaviour and mockery made of a civil ceremony which we all know isnt going to last more than days has probably damaged their cause quite a lot. Both of them are absolutely dreadful, Sophie especialy.
