Roy Cropper's mum to join Corrie next year

Spurred on by this blog post about the special Coronation Street TV Times edition that's now out this week, I bought the mag today and am so pleased I did. There's interviews with some behind the scenes people from wardrobe, extras, actors and writers, a recipe for Betty's hotpot by Jamie Oliver and some cracking Corrie interviews.

And did you know that Hairy Biker Dave Myers was once a Corrie make-up artist?

Anyway,  in an interview with Julie Hesmondhalgh, who plays Hayley Cropper, she says that Roy's mum will be arriving in Weatherfield next year.

I wonder which actress will play her?

ODE TO ROY

Weatherfield's most eccentric cafe owner Roy
Is married to Hayley who did used to be a boy
To Fiz Stape and Becky McDonald he has been just like a dad
Even though there's no denying his obsession with bats is mad
His wedding earlier this year was almost stopped by Mad Mary
Roy found the uncoupling of the train carriages quite scary
Roy is a legend hopefully he won't get flattened by a tram
And all of us can speculate about who will play his mam!

It would be amazing if it was Julie Walters playing the part but something tells me that the producers plan this to be a longer running character so we can hardly expect an actress that has appeared in 8 of the ten highest grossing movies of all time to sign up for a long stint haha (although I fully believe she will be making an appearance at some point next year)
I imagine Roys' mother would be almost Queen Victoria like, very severe and austere - unable to accept her sons' 'traits' - but this is Corrie so she is bound to be comedic - how about Patricia Routledge?

Didnt Roy have a very unhappy childhood? When bring in his mother to make his present life unhappy then? Hope its not going to be another flinty faced old witch, have enough of them already - LOL! A long lost brother would have been better in my 'umble opinion.

But if she's austere and disapproving, then i can't wait to see Hayley go toe to toe with her, defending her Roy!
