Uncoupled/Coupled: Mon Aug 30, 2010 Corrie Episode Review
7:30pm
Written by Julie Jones, directed by Graeme Harper
It’s the morning of Hayley’s wedding and everyone’s getting themselves together at the Rovers. Fiz mentions she can’t find her scan photo and Natasha looks worried and wonders if she can’t get a replacement. Becky and Fiz tell Hayley that they’ve got the best surprise and Becky jokes that she’s getting married at “World of Cider” and Hayley looks horrified until she finds it’s a joke. Over at Roy’s, it seems that John and Ches have told Roy that there’s a secret but he’s not into surprises, clearly.
At the Websters, Sian and Sophie and the bunch are all dressed up for the wedding. Well, if you want to call what Rosie’s wearing as “dressed UP” more like “dressed under.” Sophie accuses Sally of being a stage mum. Social services arrives to talk to Sophie about babysitting for Aadi Alahan in Claire’s place. Sally isn’t happy to hear that Sophie and Sian were both babysitting together. The girls don’t know what to tell social services other than the fact that Aadi was fine and they’ve got a wedding to go to. Social services says they’ll come back another time to discuss. Sally is upset that social services is accuses two teenage girls of abusing a five year old boy and thinks that Claire is to blame for all of this! Sally’s got a real chip on her shoulder now. Sally accuses Claire later of sending the police around to her place and says she’s not finished with her yet.
As Hayley gets ready to go to her wedding, Mary comes up and says she’s sorry that she takes things and makes them go bad. Mary tells Hayley that it’s the most terrible poverty being lonely and that Hayley is a very rich woman. Becky rudely says behind Mary’s back that the last thing they want is her walking down the aisle then breaks out into a verse of “It shoulda been me!” The street guests all take a charter bus to the wedding location and the back of the bus is a booze zone that Roy wants nothing to do with. A few cheap shots from Rosie, and John gets everyone singing along on the way. The bus leaves with Scary Mary following in her mobile home.
Roy is blindfolded to his location and he’s delighted to see the Lancashire Fusilier. His dream steam. Ches tells him that it’s going to take him to his wedding and that he and Ches will be driving the train and Hayley and the bridesmaids will be in the back carriage. I can’t begin to wonder how much this surprise costs. As the train pulls out of the station with all aboard, Scary Mary is seen with her hand on the dis-connector. Uh-oh! Roy is having a great time shovelling coal up front as everyone else is shovelling drinks down in the back while singing “I’m getting married in the morning.” As long as Norris is having an unhappy time, it’s a happy time. Meanwhile, in the bride’s carriage, the ladies have wondered why they haven’t been moving. Becky sticks her head out the window and exclaims “chuffing ‘ell” as they all do and realize that they’ve been disconnected from the main train. The guests arrive at their destination and come to realize that the back carriage…is…well, not there.
Sophie speaks to Claire who assures her that she won’t say anything about her and Sian. Sally sees this and gets her beak in and then accuses Claire about being a nutter. Claire can’t take it anymore and says that the reason she was talking to Sophie was because she saw Sophie and Sian snogging on the couch!
Natasha wants her and Nick to go to Derbyshire or go back to bed. Nick complains about “going to bed” too much and that they should go to town and buy some bits and bobs of baby stuff. Natasha avoids it saying she doesn’t want to jinx it, but he ends up convincing her anyway. He tells her that their baby is all he thinks about. They bring back the baby items to the pub and Michelle and Liz coo over them, making Natasha more nervous.
Michelle speaks with Liz about her job at the pub and Michelle’s not sure she wants to return even though Liz wants her back. Michelle says she can’t put up with Steve and Becky but Liz figures a bottle of shared red will change her mind. Michelle says if she comes back, it’ll have to be on her terms.

After Sophie and Sian were “outed” by Claire, they do what anyone else would do: deny, deny, deny. Sally thinks that Claire is guilty of hurting Aadi and figures that she took the worst thing you can think of and to throw it at Sophie. Sean takes offence that being a lesbian is the “worst” thing. Sally tells the girls not to worry about Claire since she’s nuts. Everyone at this point forgets about the lesbian accusation and realizes that the train has come uncoupled. Roy thought the most anxious thing that would happen that day is delivering his speech. Everyone still gossips about Claire later, and it really gets to her. At the wedding, Sian and Sophie talk outside and Sian is bricking it. Sophie says they need to get in there, otherwise it’ll look like they have done something wrong. Sian says she just might go back to Southport. Julie comes outside and says that if she is a lesbian, it’s not a bad thing. Claire leaves the wedding in tears and sees Sophie on her way out and gets angry with her for making her look like a liar and calls her a bad Christian, basically.
Meanwhile, Hayley and Becky and Fiz have been using a – contraption – to get them to the wedding on time. What is that thing called? Thank goodness for bridesmaid power! Norris tries to stop the wedding officiant from leaving to go do another wedding at the zoo? Kirk ran down the tracks and announces that they’re coming. Here they come, on the crank! Hayley finally makes it down the aisle next to her Royston. Sophie, and Sian finally get to the choir and start singing. With a peck on the lips, the deal is sealed! Hayley and Roy are finally married officially! Oh, and the contraption is a “pump wagon.”
At the reception, Roy thanks the bridesmaids for getting his bride to her marriage. Their hair a mess and all! To stinky and blotchy! Cheers. Roy gets very romantic and tells Hayley that he’ll always remain still next to her, no matter what the world decides to do. Roy and Hayley are off in the woody and that’s all folks.
Ciaran sees Michelle “back in the saddle” behind the Rovers and is delighted, I’m sure. Kylie hasn’t been thrown out, but Michelle did drive a hard bargain. Michelle gets a text from Sian saying that the wedding’s gone a bit pear-shaped since the train became uncoupled. Mary hears this and feels very guilty. Then, she finds that the wedding is all fine now and gets some relief. Mary tells Ciaran and Michelle how her “wedding dress” is at the wedding, but not her. Well, thank goodness for that.
Claire comes back from the wedding later, with Ashley and Leanne asks how she is. Simon is acting up and running away from Leanne while she talks to Ashley about Aadi. Gee, I wonder why. Simon continues to act up later that day also. When is he going to come clean about pushing Aadi? Poor kid. Chesney is happy as Katie shows up at the wedding, and didn’t ditch him after all. Sophie and Sian avoid lesbian jokes later, mostly from Rosie.
At the Websters later, Sally drives Sian home and Sophie has a word with her father. She almost feels she can tell him the truth since he says he’ll accept her regardless what happened that night at the Peacock’s. Only, she then realizes he was talking about Aadi and yells at him saying she’s not done anything! She later comes down and tells her father that what Claire said was true – her and Sian are lesbians together. Kev thinks that she should tell her mum but she makes him swear not to.
Emily asks Ken if there’s any news on that letter from Susan. Ken tells her that he’s tracked Susan down and it seems she had a son – Lawrence.
Audrey tells Nick that if he doesn’t want his mum to treat him like a child, then to stop acting like one. Nick is upset that his mum hasn’t come around to the idea of he and Natasha’s child. Audrey says she will, and that’s why she’s invited them to tea.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Roy: “Ah, whispering, secrets, smiles and jokes. Takes me back to the days when people used to spit on the back of me anorak.”
- Roy’s Ozzy Osbourne sunglasses!
- Sally to Rosie: “Oh, look at the state of you. Showing everything you’ve got and more if you have it.” I’m glad Rosie’s laid off that self-tanner though. Now for Michelle and Tina!
- John: “Ging, gang goolie, anyone?” Sean: “Oh, I thought you’d never ask!”
- Julie: “The age of steam was so romantic.” Janice: “Not when you’re busting for the bog.”
- The sound of sheeps “Baas” as the ladies realize the train has been disconnected.
- Norris: “I’m in danger of getting deep vein thrombosis!” After John asks him to sit down in the train again.
- Sean and Julie’s rendition of “Why Must I Be A Teenager In Love” and thinking that it’s a romantic tale of Juliet-and-Juliet between Sian and Sophie.
- Roy’s romantically written speech. I wonder if he has a writer? Haha.
LOWLIGHTS
- Dev being so insensitive to Claire’s mental illness and post-partum depression! Of course, I’m not surprised.
- The bridesmaids talking of their weddings and how unromantic they were. I think Fiz’s wins!
- Mary is so crazy and delusional!
- Did anyone else feel bad for Claire? I know she can be an annoying character but I really felt bad for her. Sally is right cow!

Sally is a cow and Dev is an obnoxious tosser!
And Mary... the way the editing went, it was a mere split second between everyone on the platform and the train pulling away. This was before the break. When did mary have the time let alone how did nobody notice her or that great white behemoth of a motor home. How was she not covered in oil?
Fiz is clearly not going to have a miscarraige. All that cart pumping was awfully strenuous for someone in the family way wasn't it?
All in all a really good episode though the pub scenes kind of fell flat, i kept wanting more wedding!
I have never been a fan of Clare but yes i did feel sorry for her, at least she has Ashley.Nobody seemed to stick up for her either. High time Dev and Sunita were written out (why did Sunita come back anyway). The bring nothing to the show IMO. The boy who plays Addie is unconvincing.
Yes I thought Sally was vile to Claire. The "pump wagon" thing was very similar to an old Dad's Army episode.
Director was Graeme Harper, not Harder :D
I was half expecting to hate these episodes because I knew it was going to be yet another farcical wedding like Les and Cilla's, and Becky and Steve's (the first one, when they couldn't get married because Becky got mortal) both of which I hated, but I did enjoy this one! Some of it was a bit too daft but overall I think it was well done, and Roy and Hayley's speeches were very good.
