A Blast from Coronation Street's past

Coronation Street has so many memorable storylines. I'm not likely to forget the current one with John Stape, and I think the forthcoming one involving the Windass's soldiering son Gary, played by the excellent Mikey North, is going to be really good. Anyone else have a favourite, or memorable for whatever reason, storyline?
Sometimes it isn't the really big ones that stick in your mind. I'm probably not going to remember the Underworld fire (though it was good!) but I will remember Stape standing next to that concreted-over sump hole. (By the way, what IS a sump hole?) And I'll always remember Eddie Windass in his dressing gown, recycling his rubbish (sigh!).
One cracker I'd clean forgotten about was mentioned in a comment recently. It involved the late lamented Fred Elliott, and fake Thai bride "Orchid"/Stacey Hilton, played by Casey Lee Jolleys. It wasn't that long ago, either - 2004 and 2006, and Casey Lee won a Heritage Award for best comedy performance in a soap opera. As far as I can gather, Casey Lee is now running a dance academy in Bolton.

The smaller storylines I remember include the one you mentioned, with Stacey staying with Rita and her abusive boyfriend keeping Rita hostage in the Kabin; Emily coming face to face with Ernie's killer; and the pensioners protesting against a fountain for Alf. Then there's Norris proposing to Rita and the will of Emily, plus her 'romance' with Ramsay, that was also stronger and gave Eileen Derbyshire the limelight.

I was also thinking last night that I'd remember the John Stape storyline fondly in the future. Corrie's not had a good farce for a long time and they'er doing it really well.

I'll never forget Emily up in the tree with Spider, jack posing nude and Deirdre's romance with Samir. Amazing stuff!

How about Fred Gee and Annie Walker's car being stuck in the lake....absolutely hilarious.

Jack answering posing in a dating video, all dressed up in white, but of courzse Vera finds out. What name did he give himself?

Some of the best were also with Eddie Yates and Stan Ogden getting up tp stupid schemes behind Hilda's back. Really good stuff.
A scene with great pathos was when the Ogdens won a prize to stay for a night at a posh hotel, and Stan was overcome and so impressed by the little bottles in the mini-bar. More sad than funny.

Talking about Thai brides, didn't Mike Balwyn's Dad return from Thailand with a rather scraggy looking Thai woman trailing along behind him. Certainly not a 'looker' like Orchid. Or was it my imagination. Such a long time ago.

I had forgotten too about "Orchid" but I think Fred got into the mail order bride thing because of a friend of Mike Baldwin who had a Thai wife and talked Fred into 'ordering' one only Orchid was already in the U.K. working at a market.
I like Gary Windass, and hope he comes back soon.
Also hope he's not considered one of the 'too many teens' that Phil Collinson would like to get rid of.

The answer to what a sump hole is very easy. It is a hole for putting sumps in !!!!!

I think the name Jack Duckworth gave himself was Vince St Clair or similar!!

Finally who remembers the water bed 'incident'? Was it Reg Holdsworth ?

Oh yes - I remember the water bed thing - Sheree whatsit was in it, (I always forget her surname - she's on Loose Women I think) and I'm sure it WAS Reg Holdsworth. Also liked similar story when the Battersby Brown's "jacuzzi" burst -Schmeichel got in it at one point, plus, prior to burst, they all had to use the outside loo, for some plumbing reason that escapes me!!

@martin rosen - thanks for that! (off to google "sump" now...)

One of the all time best storylines for me was the one with Carmel Finnan and Martin Platt. We're going back to 1993 or so. She was stalking Martin and of course ended up being crazy.

Wasn't she the crazy nannie. I seek to recall a crazy girl locking someone in a freezer. Was that a nutbar stalking Curly or this one stalking Martin?? I seem to recall that Gail was not too impressed...scowl, scowl.

There was a character ( Anne Malone) who got locked in the Freshco walk-in freezer overnight and was found dead in the a.m.
That part I remember ( don't know how I ever remembered her name)!
She was the assistant manageress of Fresco and she was trying to blackmail Curly in his position at Fresco.
Carmel I remember as the obsessed stalker nurse that was after Martin Platt, also a nurse.
The actress was last seen ( by me) as a Garda in Ballykissangel.

Bring 'Our Kid' back, I say bring 'Our Kid' back. She's a cracker, so she is.

water bed: Reg Holdsworth and Maureen. Derek drilled a hole in the Kabin ceiling to fix something, went through the ceiling tot he floor in the flat above and punctured the water bed.

I much prefered Les, Cilla and the dog crashing through the ceiling in the jacuzzi! They were warned that the structure of the house and the plumbing wasn't strong enough but nooooo. She had to have her jacuzzi

Those were some wonderful comedic story lines!

Anyone rememebr Duggie Ferguson? I thought he was good behind the Rovers bar.

I remember when they had a drag night in the Rovers and Duggie was Dolly Parton! And didn't Norris win the competition as Eartha Kitt?! Absolutely brilliant!
