Play School's Derek Griffiths joins Coronation Street

Having grown up watching Derek Griffiths on Play School, this casting news fairly does my head in!

Derek Griffiths is joining Coronation Street as retired mechanic Freddie, a pensioner who strikes up an unlikely friendship with Kylie following the death of his wife, a beauty client of Kylie's.

Motorbike loving Freddie will ride onto the cobbles in March. Through Kylie he finds new friends and a surrogate community in the Street.

Speaking about joining Coronation Street Derek said:

"I remember being a young boy and watching Violet Carson on Coronation Street. She was a brilliant character that people loved to hate and later when I became an actor and played the villain in panto many times those are qualities I would bring to the role.

"When I came for my audition one of the first things I saw was a huge photo of Violet Carson on the wall. I am very much looking forward to walking in those hallowed footsteps."

Have a look at Derek Griffiths from 1979 in Play School, below. Derek comes in at 3 minutes into the YouTube video.

Can't wait to see him. He has of course done far more than Play School over the years, including some Shakespeare and a stint as the Engineer in Miss Saigon :-) Talented guy.

What lovely news. I've always liked Mr Griffiths. Let's hope that the writers give his character plenty to do and that he stays for many years.

I've always liked Derek Griffiths too. I think he is able to play comedy and serious. Let's hope the writer's give him good story lines and he doesn't end up propping up the bar at the Rovers, although he would have been good as a bar tender there.
