Coronation Street change of names

Which got me thinking . . . surely other Corrie characters had alternative (printable) names?  Only last week we learned that poor old Leanne might have been Betty Battersby had it not been for intervention of Stella! Going even further back I recall a hoo-hah back in 1977 when Tracey-luv was almost burdened with the moniker Lynette Langton. Betty Battersby and Lynette Langton - sounds like a third-rate Eurovision act!

The only other example that readily springs to mind was back in the 1960s when Irma Ogden was exposed as having the perhaps less enticing name of Freda. Was she named after the tortoise on 'Blue Peter'?

If you know of any other lost character names, let's be having 'em!

Young Amy Barlow started life as Patience Cropper, and Freddy Peacock started life as something else didn't he? But I can't remember what it was.

Wasn't Vera Duckworth's proper christian name, Veronica??

Freddie Peacock was originally named Thomas, I believe.

I think Lynette Langton and Betty Battersby sound like a couple of class act drag queens!

Flaming Nora, I wonder if I could hire them for this year's office Christmas party?

Sophie was going to be Lauren but Rosie kept calling her Sophie or couldn't pronounce Lauren or something so Sal and Kev went with Sophie

Oh, pray, please don't say that Sophie was named after the only piece of furniture that Rosie could pronounce...

I remember Sarah was set to give Bethany the oh so classy name of Britney.

What's so "funny" about the name Betty? Its only a nickname for Elizabeth which is a very nice name indeeed. Liz Battersby sounds fine to me.

The point is, though, that Leanne wasn't going to be called Elizabeth with Betty just one of a number of possible shorts. She was going to be Betty, specifically, after Les's mother, which...nothing wrong with the name in itself, my grandmother was christened Betty, but it's pretty old-fashioned and the alliteration of Betty with Battersby isn't to everyone's taste!

True. Children called Elizabeth these days are usually nicknamed Beth or Liz/zie. Even when i grew up in the 70s the only Bettys i knew were my mother's friends.

We had slang called "bunk up betty" for a girl of easy virtue.
