The result on last week's Yay Or Nay on Becky McDonald was a big Nay, apart from two Yays. I see that Tvor has already posted a topic about this, but I wanted to post a Yay Or Nay on the topic as I`m really having trouble finding the point in Dennis Tanner´s return to Corrie.
I mean, it was nice to have the scenes with Rita in the homeless shelter, and Elsie getting a proper departure was nice. But that's it really. He hasn´t done much else apart from help Rita in the Kabin, drink in the Rovers or he's been without money. I really hope that the Producers will find him something to do. It's been almost three months and he hasn't done a tap of real acting, he may as well be an extra.
Do you agree? Maybe in time, with the Grimshaw relation plot, he will get a plot that will truly show off his acting skills. Even though I´m fond of the character, he isn´t making Corrie better or more nostalgic for people. So its a Nay from me, as you can expect. What about you? It's a real wasted opportunity. He has so much history with the place, and yet we see none of it. He hasn't even interacted with Gail, does he even know the history they have - Elsie was Nick´s godmother for Pete´s sake!

Yay for Dennis's return and Nay for the writer's stupidity/short sightedness/lazyness whatever the reason this great character is being ignored. Now we are to have yet another story with Sofa the Shouter and the boring homeless shelter when she steals Kev's money and this nicer, far better acted and more interesting character is ignored.... Mad mad mad.....
It's a Yay from me and I echo everything Frosty says. Writers really have lost the plot!
(and Dennis can speak properly too, Sophie can't nor can she act without folding her arms and just stomps around like a sulky 12 year old - boring boring boring)
Another echoing Yay from me. Even with nothing to do the guy can act almost everyone else off the screen. Long may he continue, preferably with a decent plot.
I like having him around. He fits in in nicely. Some sort of storyline wouldn't hurt but I don't mind where he is at the moment either.
I doubt he would have come back if he hadn't been promised some decent storylines. And after all Philip Lowrie was someone who until recently didn't even want to acknowledge he had ever been in the Street, let alone one of it's most popular early characters.
And point of order - Elsie had alreay been given a proper send off, where Linda, her daughter, told Betty (ISTR) that Elsie had died. I know younger viewers may not have seen "The Life and Loves of Elsie Tanner", but it was an officially sanctioned video after all, released by Granada. The fact that Elsie driving recklessly down a winding road in her sports car in her mid 80s obviously was a popular notion with viewers doesn't negate the fact that according to her daughter she had dies in entirely different circumstances.... 25 years earlier.
I'm thinking Dennis Tanner is the mastermind behind the theft of Kevin's money. bwhaahaaahaa!!!I think Kevins grandson is also part of the charade!
Yay! But PLEASE, Corrie PTB, don't let him end up like Doreen - a great foil for Rita and Norris who just disappeared in a puff of smoke, or Steve Huison, dismissed for, err......why exactly? Corrie writers/producers show an amazingly honed and finely crafted lack of imagination on many occasions - Dennis's return could be such a fantastic link between the past and present, a wonderful seam which could be richly exploited.
Philip Lowrie is a hugely talented actor and a valuable addition to the cast - some of whom could do very well by learning from him.
Just maybe the writers are holding back a big story for Dennis. Could be they want fans to really get behind him before they show the real reason he's back. Hope that's the case, and not that they can't think what to do with him.
I hope he doesn't turn out like Andrew Sachs' character (remember Ramsay?) does nothing for months then dies offscreen in Australia.
Yay from me too. I think he's got so much potential and i agree, he can act the socks off nearly anyone!

It seems like a good opportunity to bring back Jed Stone. I like the idea of a couple of slightly dodgy pensioners getting up to no good. They have previous form together.
Yay from me. Great to have two original characters. Not many serials can say that. Now all we need is Anne Cunningham, Doreen Keogh and Daphne Oxenford! And talking of nostalgia, Dennis could talk to Ken about Valerie and maybe see Peter and say: "I remember you being born!"
Well, first off, he needs a job or a hobby. Whether it's volunteering with Emily at the charity shop or filling Sophie's spot in Dev's empire, Dennis needs something to get him out in the world and relating to other characters.

Also a weak yay. It'd be a hoot of Becky's "new bloke" was Dennis and they ended up in a love triangle with Rita; talk about bridge between the present and the past!

Another weak yay. I had asssumed the producers were taking advantage of a lull in Mr. Lowrie's scedule and were using him as a guest star who would wander around the street pointing out the 50 years worth of memories. Give the poor fella a storyline! Hey use mine I won't charge a cent over the going rate!
Good to see Dennis Tanner back but please give him a storyline. Almost 3 months of just sitting in the bar or standing behind the counter at The Kabin saying the odd line is dull. I cant see Philip Lowrie sticking around if they carry on just having him as an extra as he said he was so looking forward to playing Dennis again. But as said he must have been promised some decent stories to accept the contract. Maybe they are biding their time and a big story for Dennis is planned. A weakish Yay for me.
what is happening to the only soap that I watch? The stupid transvestite storyline is so badly done, I'm sure that it could have been done more sensitively instead of the the comedy routine it is at present
