The Sun reveals today that Coronation Street's Carla Connor will attempt suicide days after she's raped by Frank Foster.

The paper says that Carla, downs a bottle of sleeping pills with red wine. Frank will be arrested for raping Carla but she can't come to terms with her horrific ordeal. When close pal Peter Barlow (Chris Gascoyne) visits her, teary Carla declares her love for him and begs him to leave his wife Leanne again.  But he knocks her back - completing her humiliation and sparking the overdose.

Thw scenes will be screened  in September.

Doesn't really surprise me, she's been spiralling downward for a long time now. I just hope that having taken her to absolute rock bottom, the show has a plan for allowing her to pick up the pieces and rebuild her life again and doesn't just keep her miserable from now on.

And clearly all this will have a heavy knock-on effect on both Peter and Leanne, entangled as their story tends to be with Carla's.

I agree: i hope that after finally hitting rock bottom she can manage to find a way to become even remotely happy! This is going to be a very sad story and think Ali King will be brilliant.

I can't even begin to tell you how awful I think this story is on top of the rape. Only a few weeks ago John Stape attempted suicide by jumping off a roof. Gritty drama and post watershed... I don't care what they want to call it or when it is it goes out, I think it's depressing and heavy and hardly entertainment. EastEnders was blasted for being depressing. Way to go Corrie for following.

Phil Collinson, I'm beginning to despise the way you are taking the show as there is no let up. From the total ridiculous, terrible holes in continuity and now to the pits of despair and blackness. Quite soon it won't be a cup of tea and a digestive we'll be having when we watch but a cup of tea and a prozac to get us through!

Also, they've handled so many stories so badly of late that I don't really trust them to carry these through properly. No doubt Carla will be back in the factory within a fortnight and there will be another 'big shocker' of a story on the go. Not to worry though folks, we'll soon find out as Phil Collinson will probably be on This Morning to let us know.....

Lord deliver us. I'm pretty much dreading this storyline, but I had hoped (foolishly so, given Collinson's record!) that we would see Carla overcome the trauma, come out of this strong and be all guns blazing against Frank rather than yet another powerful female character reduced to miserablism and helplessness. I'm really quite worried for Carla's future direction.

I think that this plot develoent was inevitable - Carla has been through and lost so, so much, that to not contemplate ending it - especially when Peter rejects her and she genuinely feels like she has no-one - would make me wonder where she gets the strength from!

I reckon this storyline will be incomparable to the Stape storyline as in my opinion, the standard of acting is far higher - Ali King is one of the best actors on the street - and this storyline is far more grave and devastating than Stape's which was almost comedic.

I hope that Frank's build-up to the abuse and rape is gradual and that they continue with the slow-burning nature of this storyline - god knows how Carla has suffered for so long.

At this rate I will be changing my Yay to a Nay about Phil Collinson! This is just so bad! Rape and Suicide in the space of a month :0

Carla draping herself all over married Peter again - yuk, cant the woman get the message?

Its amazing what happens on Coronation Street in front of younger viewers such as Rapes, Murder, Smoking, Swearing at times and now, and now suicide. The quicker Phil Collinson goes the better!

I agree with Seanie above.

In case anyone didn't notice, Corrie is not aired on CBBC. It's not a children's show. it's a drama. It's not even called a family drama, though many watch who are younger. I'm sure this will be handled with sensitivity. I doubt it's going to encourage young people, or anyone, to go out and rape someone, or commit suicide. It may even prompt someone who needs it to get help.

Of course it looks horrible in black and white, especially with lurid headline included in The Sun, insensitive rag that it is. No mention of all the funny stories that will also be going on at the same time.

anyone think she will die? x

I'm a bit concerned about this.

Carla is supposed to be defiant and feisty, not so desperate for the love of a man that she attempts suicide.

I thought she was more Elsie Tanner than Sheila Birtles. Tsk!

NO, Carla is fierce, she was epic, now she's embarrassing to watch throwing herself at Peter. Ugh stop ruining her :(

Now I know I am going to stir up a hornet's nest here but isnt Carla already sleeping with Frank. Now I know rape is a terrible crime along with the violence that usually comes with it but its not like she has been snatched off the street or attacked on her way home by a stranger. Would this really merit a tough cookie like Carla trying to top herself, she has been through so much in her life and come through it, would this really send her over the edge. She doesnt have kind Trevor around any more than looked after her kindly and then she kicked him on the scrapheap!

Even the strongest person can fall apart in the right circumstances. Carla's wheels came off a long time ago and she's been spiralling downward ever since - it isn't out of character, either; she has always been brittle, beneath the tough facade she likes to present to the world. I just hope that this is rock bottom and that she starts to pick herself up again afterward and is able to move forward with her life. She really does need to get over this thing for Peter now, as well - how many times does he have to say no before she gets the message?

I also hope that this isn't going to be yet another thing that Peter gets the blame for which isn't his fault. He hasn't encouraged Carla at all, this obsession she has with him is on her, not him.

I enjoy watching Carla and the others, but I am sick of watching bad photography. Keep still with the cameras

Frank's darker side needs to be explored more before the attack. They have to show some of the warning signs instead of just out of the blue attacking and raping Carla. Is Carla's character is going the way of Fiz'...going to be wimpy, and crying all the time up until the suicide attempt? The old Carla would do a Lorenna Bobbitt on anyone who raped her, without a second thought. C'mon..quit effing up the characters!!!

I hate this! I love Carla but she's gonna go down exactly the same path as fiz and Becky and become annoying and she's gonna get shoved down our throats! Phil is completely ruining the character! ever since he became producer she has been completely changed! wish he would just leave! Really miss the Carla she used to be in 2007/2008, where's she gone :(

Whoever wrote a comment about it being aired and children seeing it, surely kids should be in bed at that time anyway and soaps are made up to entertain viewers and show them real life stories so therefore if you know what's expected in the soaps don't let your kids watch them!!!
