Coronation Street Executive producer Kieran Roberts has spoken about the show's plans to say farewell to Anne Kirkbride, who portrayed Deirdre Barlow for 42 years. Anne passed away in
January this year, aged 60
Kieran said: "She was a wonderful woman, and a wonderful actress. We all miss her terribly. At the moment, we're respecting her memory. We're talking to her
family and respecting the family's wishes, but what I can tell fans of
the show is that we will be saying farewell to the character on screen
later this year.
"The exact plans are not yet finalised but that will
certainly happen. It's important that, in the real world, the family are
able to say farewell to the woman. We absolutely support and respect
all of that.
"Later in the year, we will make sure that Coronation Street is able to say a farewell to Deirdre."

Again, The Hat is conspicuous by his silence. I wonder what was really happening behind the scenes to result in this delegation of responsibility.
ummm...that will indeed be a tear jerker...wonderful actress who I already miss not seeing...will keep tissues close by for her final story line......
Perhaps some discussion about an exit story took place while Anne was still alive - with family and the producers.
I mean no disrespect but I am disappointed that the writers\producers will only honour Anne and her character Deirdre six months later? In the meantime Ken is still home alone with no explaination for Deirdre not returning from Bev's? Perhaps the writers should've spent less time with more storylines for the Platts and more on a way to honour Anne Kirkbride.
That being said,I hope Deirdre's exit will be a respectful one befitting an iconic Corrie character.
I think the key here is that they say they are respecting the family's wishes. It must be hard to share your family member with the whole country (and beyond.) Considering Anne was planning a return to the show then took a quick turn, the family and show have not had much time to come to terms with it all. It could be extremely difficult for them to see a farewell to her character when they are still deep in grief. Especially if it is hastily written.
Well said, Shan. Anne Kirkbride's death was rather sudden, and going by only fans' reactions of sadness, I can't imagine what family, cast and crew are going through. I get the feeling everyone really needs more time to process feelings.
Every time I see Anne's photo on the side of this blog, I still can't believe she's gone. I imagine ITV really want to do it right for all involved.
