Will the Corrie crash leave us shocked and stunned?

The press and social media have both been full of the next big stunt to hit Weatherfield, early in the new year. Oh yes, the Underworld minibus crash horror is a-coming.

Are we all suitably agog with excitement?

Coronation Street has a long history of big, headline grabbing events, whether it's the tram crash of 2010, either of the Rovers fires, the lorry crashing into said pub back in 1979, the tram coming off the viaduct in 1967 or the coach trip crash of 1969. All have a certain degree of ratings grabbing gimmick about them although each in turn has still managed to be entertaining.

The problem these days is how to do you top the mighty tram crash? From Ashley's last squeak beneath the rubble and Molly Dobbs breathing her last with Sally at her side to Rita's immortal "what is it wi' me an' trams?" it had it all. It was quite breathtaking in parts although some viewers did wonder whether all the disaster, mayhem and death was striking the right note of celebration.

In contrast, Carla's knicker stitchers coming a-cropper on a slip road on the M62 kind of pales into insignificance. We understand that the crash will bring Steve McDonald's depression storyline to a head. This certainly could make it interesting, especially as both Michelle (boo! hiss!) and Tracy (Sigh) are going to be coming along for the ride.

We've been promised long term consequences as a result of this plot. Hopefully this means those involved will not be sporting bandages around their heads on the Friday only for them to have vanished come the following Monday. Will someone die? Of those on board I have drawn up a long list of potentials I'd happily see the back of. In order for this to really shock us loyal, weary fans this stunt must deliver on drama and have us on the edge of our sofas. I'm thinking the only way to guarantee this is to bump someone off unexpectedly, and that someone would have to be popular.

So who, dare I ask, among the gobby knicker stitchers from Underworld would you want to get rid of and why? And are you looking forward to this new storyline? It's just the cheery start to 2015 I was hoping for.

Is it possible for anyone to die "suddenly" when all cast contracts are negotiated so publicly and the actors themselves advertise their availability for a new gig months in advance?

Pardon me if I dont get too excited about this "sensationalist" story. It will probably just be an unknown extra character that just happens to be on the bus that will cop it. More scenes in Weatherfield General to look forward to - at least the stretchers and tubes get good use!

I kind of feel like Izzy has reached the end of her relevance (if she ever had any) but I agree, it will probably be an extra.

We don't know every actor's contract situation. Cherylee Houston, for example: has she had her contract renewed? The shock value could come from Izzy being trapped by her wheelchair and nobody being able or willing to rescue her from the wreckage. Her character is quite well-loved but she's redundant now that Gary and Alya are an item. Steve's depression could apring from the fact that the minibus didn't meet all the health and safety specifications. I, too, have a list of characters I would like to send off but Izzy isn't on it. Lloyd's another possibility, as co-driver, if CC wants to leave Corrie.

Well, Izzy is a pretty dispensable character now. And I think a LOT of people would love to see the backside of Michelle and/or Tracy. Don't suppose there's a chance of the Nazir clan being on that minibus. They can all go...especially the oh so nasty Zeedan and snarling Yasmeen. They are THE worst family to ever hit the street.

Please ...... both Michelle and Tracy. Steve could fall for someone totally new who would treat him with some respect and help him to recover from his depression.

I kind of hope that it's Sean or Fiz, or even Maddeh, but more especially Michelle if she's included in the trip as an ex-employee, or more likely in her new capacity as party planner extraordinaire, which could extend to coach trip planner ( without portfolio!)
Agreed though that Izzy is certainly past her sell by date.

I agree with Zagg, the Azirs have to go, I don't see what they contribute to the story except boredom.
Izzy is well past her expiry date for sure , as well as Lloyd & his girlfriend.
Maybe Peter will be on it too ? Simon ?

The whining about Michelle and Tracy is getting really tedious now.

Why on earth would Tracy be going along on an Underworld outing in the first place? Or Michelle? Ok, Michelle is Carla's mate and Steve's partner but there's no reason that I can think of for Tracy to be there.

Devils advocate Tvor, but both did previously work in the factory & maybe the workers could invite a friend, so Beth could invite Tracy.

No I can't think why she would be there either, weird!

That's possible I suppose, they have created a friendship between Tracy and Beth

Since Steve will be driving,I wonder if he'll he charged with reckless driving thus reuniting him with his father in jail?

Tvor said...

I reckon it will be Michelle at death's door which will be the kick Steve needs to get help.

If it is just the faktry gurls on the mini-bus, then I vote for Izzy to be sacrificed for the greater good. However, if by chance Andrea grins her way onto the bus for the outing, then she should pay the ultimate price for not being a Faktry employee...thus paving the way for Craig Charles's temporary exit from Corrie to film that other program.....coming back rejuvenated and hopefully being paired with someone that shows some chemistry between them on-screen.

Tracy will be there to snipe and have a go at Carla no doubt. I mean what else is she going to do?

I'm with Tvor, I think it's Michellle and Steve realises what he might lose and gets the help he needs. They haven't said someone will die only that someone is seriously hurt. We all know how clever they are at weathy general so she'll be back home again within a few days

I also got confused seeing Tracy there. She doesn't work at Underworld and she is continually vile to the boss so it's a bit weird. I can only assume that she has to be there for there to be a twist in her storyline with Carla. Not much point in her being there otherwise.

It could be interesting if Steve developed feelings (unrequited) for Carla. Imagine Michelle's face.

I agree with Tvor, I think Michelle will be in danger and that will make Steve admit everything. He'll be apologising and declaring his love for her.

I don't think anyone will die. I suspect Sally will also be in danger, though.

I think it may either be Andrea as she is pretty pointless and always has been in Frosty's opinion, that would give the door for Lloyd to 'leave' as he has supposed to be doing for ages. But I agree with Vick it will probably be some unknown - 'Mary from packing' or a nomark like that. Personally I would like it to be Eileen, this bitter old moaner has had her day.

Sean please x

Anonymous,For what it's worth,I hope Sally isn't injured simply because I don't like the thought of seeing both Kevin[who's done nothing but hang around her]and Tim at her bedside arguing who loves Sally more.

Dubcek said...

Too bad it isn't Steve who is going to be seriously hurt, then Michelle can reflect on the way she's treated him like sh*t and realise his depression has all been her fault and she leaves never to be seen again.

Tracey and Michelle and Sinead and Sean. Sean then meets a hunky love while recouping, Sinead and Tracey get better real quick and Tracey gets to cry even more!! Michelle Michelle doesn't work at the factory, and spoilers would have us believe it's a factory worker. Maybe she gets a scar or two and a limp and her boobs deflate then she becomes depressed and that cheers Steve up.

I vote Izzy off the street. I don't even think we'll notice she's not around. If that happens, then Gary will have to be a parent, and that is not apparently convenient for him at the moment. Poor lil' fella is barely able to take care of himself let alone that lil babby he so desperately needed. OOOHhhh, explosive story and more pooh then we can shake a stick at.

My answer to the question in the title: No.

This crash will be referenced loads for a short while after, then barely. If it gets mentioned in dialogue once this time next year we will be expected to be grateful for continuity.

Another example is this: If you said to me "Rovers fire" I would instinctively think of the 1986 fire and not the fire last year. Last years fire was forgetable.

RE Humpty: "Her character is quite well-loved but she's redundant now that Gary and Alya are an item."

Why? Because she's not part of a couple? If anything it would be refreshing to see a storyline where a woman (or a man) was happily single, and in this case seeing more of her life, coping with a child and a disability.

IMO there's still a lot the writers could do with Izzy.
