Coronation Street Episode Review; Weds 23rd September 7.30 & 8.30 pm

Daniel's latest dalliance with Nicky (paid or unpaid) has certainly dismissed any platonic proposals that these two may have had for each other. Seemingly falling for the boy’s bookish Barlow charms, Daniel’s hopes of taking Nicky’s to Lytham St Anne’s have been scuppered by his hypocritical harpooning of her chosen career choice. Finally letting her guard down, is Nicky putting pride before a fall? I must admit, I like how they are they are treating the occupation of a sex worker, but is it all going a bit ‘band of gold?’ A sudden spark of a relationship and Daniel is suddenly running around on his mobile and hammering Adam for a wage sub so he can give the cash to Nicky. Too little too late though as Nicky returns from a job all bloodied and seemingly attacked by a punter.

Michael and Toyah struggle to keep a client happy at the factory... I say factory, but is it now a sales hub? Some sort of SME, perhaps? I imagine they are all online because when was the last time we saw a sewing machine? I’d love to see a ‘Mike Baldwin’ type whip these millennials into shape! Michael cheers up with a visit from Grace, and it seems this couple are co-parenting just nicely. How long will that last, do we think? Also, why have the rest of the Bailey clan just disappeared? We know Aggie will be busy with COVID, but James and Ed? No sign of them!

Abi is not happy. The fall-out from her pass at Peter seems to be as troublesome as abstaining from the methadone!. The machismo of Kev facing off with Peter … can you imagine? It would be fisticuffs galore, I reckon! The drama lends itself to everybody finding out, so I am hopeful. How hopeful are we (or would we be) of Abi and Peter having an affair, though? I mean, addiction is all-consuming and they do have that connection! Denying all knowledge of Abi making a pass at him, Peter gets a telling off from Kev’s sister, Debbie, and surprise surprise, he heads off to tell Abi all about it. This could all blow up, you know, just like that boat did!

Past misdemeanours are also prevalent when it comes to Billy’s tracking down of ex-lover Todd Grimshaw. The Private investigator tells the Vicar that Todd’s been messing with the local gangs, and has subsequently disappeared. Paul admits that he’s also made a call to the gazette in hope that a story raises awareness. Is it time that somebody told Eileen?

Mary's floristry stories continue (it’s a bit of a thread this past week, I think) and having made things better with George, she's now haranguing Brian Packham over the cornflowers! Is this more flora flirting from Mary? Could Brian fall for Mary’s sweet eccentricities and leave Cathy, or am I getting mistaken, again? It’s the war of the (dog) roses, more likely! Barring Brian from the florist, Mary is banned from The Kabin too, and then so is Tyrone. Can Mary and Brian be Corrie’s new comedic duo?

At the hospital, Daniel unwittingly meets Nicky’s Mum and is immediately chastised for his trouble. It seems her mother is also wary of her daughter's job and gives us a bit more of a character insight.

Daniel’s grief over Sinead is still manifesting itself, isn’t it? Dalliance’s and dangerous liaisons aside, is Nicky a welcome (but troublesome) distraction for the grieving widower, or is she about to make things a whole lot worse for him? The messiah complex can't be helping, and Adam agrees. Helpless without the cash, Geoff leaves a wad at the solicitors office and it seems our question is answered!

That's violent Geoff by the way, a man who also procures the services of prostitutes...

Just when I thought the sinkhole episode was the lowest Corrie could stoop, we got last night's fiasco; Mary and Brian bickering about cornflower, some pointless scenes with Toyah and Michael in the factory… What the hell did I just watch?
It’s got to the point where I’m done defending this crap. The stupid sinkhole should’ve been a red flag. There’s no consistency or realism to the storylines anymore, the characters personalities turn on a dime, and the humour is bordering panto territory, not funny at all… and the social distancing isn't helping matters (should've taken a leaf out of EastEnders' book).
Hate to say it but Corrie’s lost the plot. If this is the shape of things to come then I'm not looking forward to the 60th anniversary at all. Definitely won't live up to the masterpiece of the tramcrash.

I agree, last night's episode was so bad it was almost unwatchable. It was simply a series of fillers that made no sense. What was the point in that whole scene in the factory where Sarah was running late and Michael and Toyah were competing with each other to see how completely inane they could be? Please, please can we go back to three quality episodes a week and have less of this drivel?

The Mary and Brian scenes were truly awful, but I liked how Cathy stood up to Brian and sorted it pronto. I think Cathy can do better for herself than plodding, boring Brian.
The Toyah and Micheal factory scenes were also pretty awful. I thought Carla was taking over the factory, as Nick is supporting Leeanne? Why wasn't she greeting this client?
Where Beth? She's mentioned - and I've even spotted her name on her locker in Underworld - but she's never seen. She'd be the first in line to give Daniel a piece of her mind re: Nicky, but instead she sends Kirky.
I find it very strange that no- one has mentioned The Platt's sinkhole - instead we're given Abi's 'tempted by drugs- no, now I'm tempted by Peter' plot which is getting very tedious.
Why is Debbie Webster back, exactly?
Anyway, I expect the writers have done their best with the ever- changing situation.

I have a feeling that Debbie Webster is in cahoot with Ray.

I have vague memories of the Corrie bus crash - the last black and white episode - so I've been watching this show for a long time (1974, I think? I was very, VERY young at the time!) But I have to say, for me, last night's first episode was the worst they have ever broadcast. It was calamitously, toe-curlingly, blackboard- and barrel-scrapingly AWFUL! A real struggle to get through! The writing was abysmal; the dialogue was unnatural; factory scenes were awful; the 'flower-war' was excruciatingly stupid! (No one thought to Google/Voggle 'Dog Rose' and shut the pillock up?) Many performances were sub-par, most egregiously, Brian Gunn, who is capable of far better. It was as though the actors were too dispirited by the vacuous drivel they'd been given to even put the effort in. I actually found myself longing for a Gemma and the Quads scene (and I LOATHE Gemma and the Quads!).

I know these are difficult times, and the cast and crew are doing wonders considering the logistical difficulties, but none of that excuses bad writing. Sure, these filler scenes have become increasingly necessary, but might the younger writers watch a few eps of Classic Corrie to learn how you do this in an entertaining, engaging way. That Faktry Break-out area is fast becoming the Waiting Room to Comedy Hell: my heart sinks whenever a resident who doesn't work there swings by for a chinwag with employees who are supposed to be working. On one occasion, Mary actually brought in a blanket for Sean! In what parallel universe are these acceptable working practices?

So, 'Mary and Brian as a new comedy double act'? Emphatically, no! They'd have to have been funny for that to work.

Maybe Lisa George has underlying health issues and is shielding, as I suspect Sue Cleaver is as well

The new factory confuses me. What is it now? Is it still a knicker factory or is it a packing and distribution centre? What is Toyah’s job? What is Michael's? And Alina’s, come to think of it? Do all the residents of Weatherfield now work at Underworld? Who’s in charge? Is it Sarah? Nick? Carla? Who owns what? And why do we only ever see the break area and nothing else?
It’s all very confusing…
They should have left the factory how it was with Carla in charge instead of turning it into a glorified community centre where any random person can wander in off the street for a natter with the staff who never seem to do a stroke of work.
Just one of the many things wrong with Corrie atm.

They seem to introduce a 'judgemental' older relative whenever they want to bring the audience onside with a character or situation, as with Billy's adoption of Summer. Here it is to ensure that a 'sex worker' is viewed as a victim, and that the writers want us to sympathise. I'm not saying we shouldn't in either case, but that has been the pattern in recent years. Cobblestone, the bus crash was 1969, I believe; you're older than you thought, but aren't we all ;-) ?

Toyah and Brian were super annoying and for what reason? It's too bad that Geoff is getting mixed up with the Daniel/Nicky thing. The storyline with Yasmeen was believable but now is it going to turn into a crazy caper? Beth is annoying even off screen! At least we have Jenny and Mary the rest is yawn.

Simple question. Why didn’t Brian Google cornflowers and dog roses?
Somebody should tell Toyah ‘I’ve worked in a professional situation’ Battersby that you don’t argue or contradict a co worker in front of a client.
I could barely watch the first episode it was so bad.

Phew, I thought I'd fallen in a sink-hole into a parallel universe in that episode! So it wasn't just me then. That first episode gets the lemon award for worst ever in the history of the show. Oh, and Toyah, almond milk is not creamy. It's thin and watery actually.

Thank goodness it’s not just me........this was an hour of absolute drivel and an insult to us dedicated viewers. ...the nonsense over a bunch of flowers (and whatever they were you’d certainly never have found them on the Red Rev), Toyah, who. I thought had a brain, Peter Barlow lurking in the gunnel....it never ended. I think ITV should put up a warning, as they did with the pre lock-down episodes, saying “we apologise for wasting your time over the next hour. Our scriptwriters have lost the plot , so there won’t be one for the foreseeable’

I agree with all these comments! I thought last Friday's was bad, this was far worse though.

Just a minor thing, but did anyone else think that wad of cash that Daniel found was way more than Nicky's fee would have been?

Daniel's rant at Geoff was pretty good though, his expression did suggest that he had never considered that the escorts were only out with him for the money!

I'm so pleased to read these comments which just validate my thoughts about these episodes. So dreadful, I have it on in the background, can't be bothered to care. The scene in the factory..abysmal. Just unfunny, filler scenes. I realise I just don't care about any of the characters or what's happening.

I thought Daniel was going to use the money to pay off Nicky's debts. That's why he took all the money

Yes, it looks like Lisa George (Beth) and Sue Cleaver(Eileen) are shielding or recovering from Covid, but I've seen mag photos of Sue with pink hair!

How and why does Abi, a MECHANIC, have perfectly manicured fingernails? And how is she touching them up, since she only has the use of one hand?
