Rob Mallard interview: Daniel and Nicky, is it love?

What can you tell us about Daniel and Nicky’s relationship prior to this week?
Daniel feels a lot closer to Nicky than he does to any of the other girls that she has put him in touch with, whether it’s a combination of her blonde hair and her height that makes him think of Sinead or whether it is because she is the first person that he has cared about since Sinead. They have both agreed that Daniel will not pay her anymore and that they will try and be mates with each other. But he is struggling to make the choice to lose her whereas he didn’t make a choice to lose Sinead.

Now that he has got to know Nicky on a personal level, is Daniel drawn to her as an individual or is he still drawn to her because she has a look of Sinead?
I think the element of Sinead has got a lot smaller. The last year of Sinead’s life, and particularly towards the end, she was in bed and there wasn’t much life going on. With Nicky, even her lifestyle is very on edge and exciting so there is also that element to it too. Nicky is so different that it is intoxicating.

Is Daniel aware of Nicky’s growing feelings towards him?
No, he is oblivious. He offers again to pay for her company even though they both have agreed that he does not need to so he is insecure about spending time with her. Adam says that Nicky is just using him and that definitely gets to him and he listens to that.

Daniel is aware that Nicky has enormous debts. What makes him want to help her?
Daniel is not very good at looking after himself and people who aren’t very good at looking after themselves tend to be really good at looking after other people. He has still not learnt how to take care of himself. He also feels like he failed to look after Sinead so he is trying extra hard to look after Nicky.

When Nicky leans in closer to him, what goes through his mind?
He thinks, “Oh god, is she going to actually kiss me?” He is aware that he has stopped giving her money and they’ve never kissed, even when he was paying her. This is the moment that he either gets what he wants out of Nicky or the moment that he crosses the line and betrays Sinead’s memory. It’s a crossroads; once he goes there, he can’t come back from it.

Why does he make derogatory comments about Nicky to Kirk?
It is such a deflated moment and Kirk just repeats to Daniel what everyone else has been saying all along. He tells Kirk what he wants to hear.

Does Daniel feel that it is unfair that Kirk and Beth have these expectations on him about how he should live his life?
Yes, he does but he also understands. There is a guilt complex there because of the way he behaved the week before Sinead died and Beth knows that she can press that whenever she wants to. It is unfair and it is overreaching but in this situation they do have a point because Nicky is not a very stable person. Kirk and Beth are definitely pushing his guilt button.

When Daniel asks Nicky for a proper relationship, is that to get back at people like Kirk, Beth and Adam or is that genuinely what he wants?
An element of it is to prove that Nicky wasn’t just after him for the money but in a tragic way he likes the romance of the situation. In terms of a romantic novel, there he is after the death of his wife, meeting a girl who he white knights and saves her life and whisks away to become “a proper lady.” He likes to think of himself as someone who saves people.

Tell us what happens when Daniel crosses paths with Geoff.
When Daniel, Adam and Geoff are in the solicitor’s office, Daniel chimes in about Geoff using sex workers. A few weeks back, Nicky was beaten up in a hotel room so Daniel is now seeing a physical representation of who he imagines may have attacked Nicky. He sees Geoff as a target. When he takes Geoff’s money, it is spur of the moment and it all seems too good to be true; Daniel is after money and suddenly, there in front of him, is an envelope of cash from a despicable person so no karma is lost there.

Should Daniel be scared of Geoff?
Daniel is not thinking that far ahead at first, he just takes the envelope of money, but as soon as he has given the money over to Nicky, he thinks, “What have I done?”

What has the reaction been like from viewers about Daniel and Nicky’s relationship?
A lot of people have been saying that they want it to work for the sake of Daniel and others have been saying, “She’s not good for you Daniel, run away!”

What advice would you give to Daniel?
Get a dog! It’s a hard one because he is still young and he still has a life to live but I would tell him to get down to the Student Union or go meet some people who are in a similar situation to him. He should go to some single parent groups but maybe he just likes the thrill of meeting Nicky. I don’t think he would be very happy if there wasn’t a bit of a drama going on.

It has been a massive year for Daniel. Do you enjoy playing these dramatic storylines or would you like Daniel to have some happiness soon?
I think it is a nice balance because the way that they write Daniel is that he is very dry. I really like that because it gives me enough scope to move around in scenes to get a bit of both comedy and drama.
