Coronation Street Episode Review; Weds 9th of Sept 7.30 pm

Have Sally's sneaking suspicions done the trick in her quest to bring down Geoff? Stealing the laptop from N0.6 is one thing, but finally convincing Tim of his father’s nasty streak, well that’s a trick even Houdini would have trouble with. I’m sure Geoff has read that book but he’s not learnt about true deception! No magic trick can get him out this one - surely? Rather than letting Sally escape though, I envisaged him locking her in the box, if I’m honest. At least Sal managed to steal his laptop, but I thought Geoff had made that footage disappear? Anyway, sensing that Geoff has lax laptop security, Faye easily breaks into it and hey presto! The great magnifico’s vile abuse of Yasmeen is discovered!

At least little Lily didn’t magically disappear, what with Shona’s babysitting! The air of vulnerability lends a different side to this story and is a balance when we consider her most recent comedic ‘no filter’, scenes. It’s a balance that Corrie does well and I’m enjoying this story. What do you think? Daniel is another one who’s vulnerability is being subtly used to progress a story. As predicted a few weeks ago, I still sense that his friendship with Nicky may be leading into a relationship, but I wonder where it will lead? Is she the new Sinead, maybe?

In Dev's defence, selling the kebab house is probably a good idea. I think we can all agree he's going to need that cash for the school fees. Asha certainly needs expert tuition in feminism, if she’s serious in getting back together with that cad, Corey! The Alahan's troubles seem trivial though when compared to Leanne and NIck’s emotional plight. Arranging a trip away, I get the sense that this is either the last family trip, or it may not happen. So sad.

Less sad though, is watching jiggle it Geoff squirm as Tim tells him some home truths and the police come to arrest him.

I reckon Sally could be our next Corrie magician! I think we can guess that her next trick will be freeing Yasmeen?

I’ve been critical of Corrie lately, but wow, last night’s episode was a corker!
The highlight was of course Tim finally seeing his father for the monster he is. We’ve been waiting for the penny to drop for Tim for a long time now, and boy it didn’t disappoint! The writing and acting was top-notch, I was especially blown away by Tim! Watching Geoff squirm was a real joy, too.
It seems the jig’s finally up for Jiggle it Geoff and what a satisfying comeuppance it was!
Brilliant stuff.
I’m not a fan of Shona’s storyline but I found the small scene between David and Sarah very believable. It goes to show we don’t need to see Shona doing outlandish things all of the time to get the point across that she’s different now. Sometimes going for a subtler, more nuanced approach works better.
Also the scenes with Nick, Steve and Leanne were very touching.
What I loved most about the episode was that the focus was on the characters rather than the plot and we got lots of meaningful human interactions. One of my biggest criticisms of Corrie in recent years is that it’s become too plot-heavy, so shifting the focus back on the characters made for a nice change and engaged me with storylines I previously didn’t care for (Shona’s and Oliver’s).
Great stuff, Corrie.
Hopefully, we can have more character-driven content in the future (pretty please?).

I'm going to say something very controversial now that probably won't go well on here, with all the negativity, but I actually really enjoyed last night's episode! Sorry folks. It was great to see the scales fall from Tim's eyes, and the sight of Geoff simpering as he got taken away by the police was well worth it

I criticise the show when criticism is valid, not because I like a good moan, but I also praise the show when it delivers, and last night’s episode sure did deliver. Great stuff all round, especially from Tim who really got to flex his acting muscles and I’ve gained a whole new respect for him both as an actor and a character. Bravo sir!

Joe Duttine really showed what a terrific actor he is. No histrionics, stunt fights just simple body language while he watched the video. Yes, it was a bit contrived that he knew the password and that Sally guessed the right folder but with such acting, it didn't matter. Even the best detective stories rely on a bit of fluke. I'm guessing Geoff will be bailed and then go on the run, taking Elaine with him as hostage. Excellent episode and it wasn't spoilt by any OTT comedy in the other storylines.

Can we all agree that August was a bad month for Coronation Street. But this episode could be the start of Coronation Street getting out of its slump. Excellent episode. It would had been a good episode (better than August episodes) if it didn’t have Tim, Sally and Geoff’s scenes but those scenes made the episode great.

I agree with all the above comments, last night’s episode was one of the best in a long time and restored my faith in the show. From Tim’s and Geoff’s explosion confrontation, to Sarah and David’s conversation about Shona, to the small moment between Nick and Steve – all excellent, really great writing and brilliantly acted.
I hope this is the beginning of an upwards trajectory for Corrie because for the longest time now it’s been mediocre at best.
As long as we don’t get a return of Gemma and Chesney or the tedious Gangster Gary plot, we should be fine.

Well, you're going to get a return to those storylines as they've not been concluded yet. I really can't see how tptb are gonna get themselves out of the huge Gemma/Chesney shaped hole they've dug for themselves, especially as Dolly Rose and Sam have shown no intention of leaving anytime soon

Jeanie (anon): Agreed. A fantastic episode particularly in contrast to some of the stuff coming out lately. As a huge fan of the Geoff-Yasmeen storyline, I've just been waiting for this moment! As a sidenote--what really impresses me is how well Yasmeen/Shelley King has risen to this challenge and how her character has really been transformed. In the beginning she was such a one note character (ott librarian activist) and the actress declaimed her lines with such over-exaggerated emphasis that it was often embarrassing. I guess she was very used to the theatre. But now she's doing an amazing job with Yasmeen. Hats off to her, Joe Duttine and good ol' Sal. They must be having a whole, heckuva lot of fun! And it shows in the quality of their work.

I have to stream some of this online - right now in Canada everything's been taken over by the hockey Stanley Cup and I'm SO in Corrie withdrawl!
Sounds like I missed a good one!!!

Hello fellow Canadian, in my region (Toronto area) because of the hockey,it has been airing Mon, Tues, Wed, specials on Thursday at 1:00 pm. Fortunately I am able to record it.

Also posting from Canada.I watch current episodes on Soapspoiler.org,hopefully other Canucks know about that site.
Really cant see how they are going to justify the Geoff storyline until the fnd of this year now.
The police need to forensically examine the laptop surely, and find the deleted videos, including from the night of the attack.
I believe Elaine is probably in a safe house, possibly already in contact with the police.
But one thing for certain, there will be a surprise element when the conclusion comes. There always is.
Justice for Yasmeen.

Give Joe Duttine a good script and he rises to the occasion...he’s a very fine actor. Just a shame his right arm has a rapidly growing horrible black disease. And admiration for the Canadian followers for emulating detective Sally to find a way of watching. Respect!

I do not understand the black disease part??

Tatoo???

A black mass of tattoos is creeping down his arm!

I loathe tattoos. Also you can never tell whether it's the actor or the character who has them. Often a tattoo is really inappropriate for a character, and the programme makers should insist on the actor covering it up with make-up or clothing.

Anonymous said...

That is such an old fashioned view - a lot of people has them now, and it should reflect by characters on the street.

dhvinyl said...

Hooray...I’m not the only one! Never mind how awful so many tattoos look new, just think how they’ll look on wrinkled old bodies. Peter Barlow’s are the worst, ugly design just schlapped on his body without any thought or finesse, while Tim’s is pretty recent and just looks like the black mess I mentioned, but steadily creeping down his right arm. Any Man City followers will surely have boggled at their goalkeeper, whose neck is a total disaster. I blame David Beecham !!
