Charlie Condou on Marcus falling for Maria

There's a good interview with Charlie Condou, who plays Coronation Street's Marcus Dent, in this week's fab Inside Soap magazine.

Charlie talks about Marcus falling for Maria as he supports her through her breast cancer scare. It's interesting to hear Charlie's side of things as a gay actor playing a gay character who's falling for a woman.

Talking about the story, Charlie says: "I was nervous at first. But what's so nice about Marcus and Maria's story is that it's different and hasn't been done before. I also like the way that Corrie is exploring this - and that it's making no apologies for it, either.

"Marucus is gay and would definitely describe himself as gay. If things didn't work out with Maria, I don't think he'd start fancying Michelle or Tina. There's just something about Maria and their relationship. Marcus is so confused by his feelings for Maria - he's never questioned his sexuality before.

"The writers are very clear - Marcus is a gay man, and will continue to be a gay man.  There was never any question that they would drop in the fact that Marcus had girlfriends in the past. They didn't take the easy way out, and wanted to be brave."

It also looks like Marcus and Maria's snog won't be kept a secret. As if it could be - this is soap!  Charlie says: "It's going to be very difficult for Aiden, Sean and Jason - and Eileen is going to be really unhappy. Sean knows him better than anyone else, so it will be a very confusing situation for him. It'll be interesting to see who accepts it."

I like this storyline. Think it'll be really interesting.

Yes I like it too but only because of Marcus/Charlie Condou who I think is great. Not so sure about Samia Ghadie/Maria though, her character's really weak (in my opinion) and she's never been one of my favourites.

Start with best friends and throw in a little boy, a family that Marcus has always wanted. It must be very attractive to him on the whole. It's entirely possible he's been attracted to a woman now and then in his past. I think this will be interesting as well.

I love Charlie Condou, and look forward to this story. I've nothing against Maria but she is a bit 'beige'.Perhaps this challenging story line will bring out hidden depths to Maria's character and Samia Smith will rise to the occasion admirably.

Is this going to be another 'who's the daddy' scenario when Maria ends up preggers?
I hope this is the end of that creepy Aidan character..he just doesn't fit in IMO.

I think this storyline has the potential to be very good and I think that if they give Samia the chance with good dialogue and depth to the storyline she will shine.
They haven't very often given her the chance to carry a real good storyline.
Compared to the surrogacy storyline that seems to be spiralling into the ridiculous I think this will be a needed bright spot.

I too, look forward to this story because I like both characters, and it's a topic not often explored in gay storylines, indeed in my gathering of friends' discussions. I agree with Dubcek; Samia has never been given stories with depth, because, IMO, the producers and writers have fallen into the trap of she's a physically beautiful woman (as well as a beautiful person) and the stereotype of physically beautiful women should be a bit dozy and best for window dressing.

Samia was briefly given some comedy to do when Maria paired up with Michelle. I was surprised at how good she was. She had a decent script on the night and could do something with it. I reckon she'll be pretty good with this story. Having said that, I do think it would have been more interesting for Marcus to have a cancer scare and to turn to Maria rather than Aiden or Sean.

I agree with most of what's been said above. I don't mind Maria's character, and I'm glad Charlie has talk about it not being a conversion as such but more of an addition. The thought that a gay man would fall for a particular person rather than a gender as a whole is far more believable.

I think Samia is a fantastic actress - she great during the Liam, stillbirth and Tony saga and Charlie is also a fantastic actor. They have amazing onscreen chemistry so I'm really looking forward to this storyline!

I'm very glad to hear Charlie clarify what I suspected already - that the writers aren't going to try some ridiculous conversion but actually explore confusing emotions that develop as a result of many variables in a complicated situation. I love it when we get to see the reality of the complexity of people, rather than all this see-spot-run nonsense.

I absolutely adore Charlie Condou and would be thrilled to find myself in this storyline with him and/or Marcus to boot! Great personality to explore these kinds of emotions.
