Carla to suffer miscarriage after Tina's murder

Carla Barlow

Digital Spy reports that Carla Barlow suffers a miscarriage in the wake of Tina McIntyre's death and Peter Barlow's affair confession.

They say that Carla collapses on the cobbles as the pressure of the murder investigation and the stresses with Peter.

The miscarriage takes place after she sees a fight break out between Peter and her brother Rob Donovan at a bus stop. As the two trade blows, Carla falls and is rushed to hospital, where the medical staff confirm she has lost her baby.

You could tell from last week that no matter what Carla's involvement was to be in Tina's death, she was not destined to carry this baby to term. Probably just as well given how terrible Peter has been with Simon, he's not exactly father of the year material.

What a cop out. Having a child could have taken the character in new directions over a much longer term. What next for Carla? The usual cycle of meet an inappropriate man, it goes spectacularly wrong, whilst she fights to get the business back.... Too much short-term sensationalism, not enough real character progression or development. This storyline is a missed opportunity, shame on Blackburn.

I really hoped Carla would have the baby and become a single mum. However, after the scare the other day, it was probably inevitable that she would lose it. The only thing keeping Carla in the Street is the factory and we know how businesses can be bought and sold over a handshake. If Alison King leaves the Street, I'd love her to sell the factory back to Danny Baldwin.

This makes me so angry. How many miscarriages have there been on the street over the past few years? Izzy, Leanne, Tracey and now Carla. Not one of those was treated with the respect and sensitivity the subject deserves, they were all used as plot devices to move on storylines or get rid of inconvenient pregnancies that were shoehorned in for sensationalism. The writers really need to stop using this as a fallback or shock tactic and be both more creative and more respectful of something which has a devastating and traumatic impact on families and especially mothers.

There have been quite a few miscarriages lately. In all there have been 12 miscarriages in Coronation Street history. 8 of these have been in the last 10 years, and 5 occurred in 2010-2012. Carla will be #13.

Anonymous 19:58. Also remember Liz's still born, was she Katie? And Sarah-Lou and Todd's still born son Billy.

I am totally disgusted with this announcement, although predicted they'd go for short term drama over the long term interests of character development.

What this also means is that nothing good will be salvaged from this abysmal storyline

Yes, Liz and Jim's daughter was Katherine, but I think she and Billy would count as births, rather than miscarriages, even though they were stillborn.

Even so, it would seem that we've had more than enough miscarriages in the past few years.

I figured as much. I couldn't really see Carla toting a babe around - it's just not in her character.

Good. This entire story line was contrary to the character and at least we won't have another Maria-like sob-story of her having to raise the kid alone after Peter leaves the Street, especially when she never wanted kids the first bloody place!

Don't forget Maria and Liam's first baby who was stillborn after no heartbeat was detected during the ultrasound.

I think Carla would have made an interesting single mom. More so than other characters because of her lifestyle. She would have been the Victoria Beckham of the street: making carrying and caring for a baby fashionable! LOL would have been a treat to see her 8 months pregnant struggling to fit into her stilettos. Shame that they couldn't give this dramatic storyline a bit of humour months down the line, but instead resorted again to the miscarriage route.

I am not one bit surprised I saw it coming as soon as she became pregnant! As someone who has suffered a miscarriage after years of infertility it was devastating for my husband and I however we had the love and support of all of our friends and family and eventually we welcomed our lovely son. I just hope that it will be dealt with realistically and sensitively.

Umm...not a surprise at all....I sort of thought this might happen, with Chris leaving at some point this year....

Shame Corrie writers Carla would have added so much oomph to the show with her day to day battling of being a single mum she would have broken the curse she thought she'd have and been amazing but another great plot has been taken away would rather see more if Carla ' s character growing than just running the mill

Humpty, would Carla need to leave the street for Danny Baldwin to return as an owner? Maybe Peter could sell his 50% to Danny Baldwin - imagine the powerful interaction between Carla and Danny, each believing the success of the business is due to his/her expertise as an owner/manager...especially with the ownership being 50/50 so neither is more in charge than the other. Both are strong-willed, 'in charge' people so there would be years of conflict to work from with these two. I would love to see Danny return.

I would like to see Carla and Danny as equal partners in the factory; as business partners only and not having an affair.
