Coronation Street Double Episode Review Monday 2 September 2013

Very pleased to see Jason using his brain tonight and trying to reignite Dev's enthusiasm, which Dev himself calls an obsession, into finding out exactly what brought about Sunita's death. Karl threatened to kill Jason so naturally Jason is very alert to anything which might incriminate Karl. Surely Karl would realise that buying Craig a computer game is odd. (Perhaps that's Barlow's Buys first sale?) But Beth is right to demand to see Karl. Stella, the poor deluded one, is convinced that Beth has got the wrong end of the stick and when asked if he did buy Craig a game, he denies it because literally, he didn't-but he did give him the money, which he admits to but he did it because he's a nice guy, he claims. Jason is there with Dev, both listening very carefully to what Beth is saying. The anger soon goes out of Beth though when offered a a drink on the house which she rightly sees as a bribe. A rum and coke it is, for Beth.

Craig is excellent as a teenage boy full of angst. He appears so vulnerable and of course, wily Karl can use him to his own advantage. It is so cruel of Karl to allow Craig  to carry on believing that he is the cause of the death of two people and that he is not going to the police out of concern for Craig. Surely Stella and everyone else will realise eventually to what levels Karl has stooped. Comeuppance won't be too long now and Gloria, probably his biggest fan, will be shocked that she was duped so easily, unless of course she starts to claim that she suspected him all along.

Sinead and Chesney are giving it another go. She is so likeable - no pretension, no airs and graces and with the self-confidence and self-belief that she's too good to be messed about. You're a lucky man Chesney. Sinead should take classes for young women who allow themselves to be messed around.

Peter is doing very well in the factory. Comforting Sally and making tea and jokes, though he feels they are lost on these 'intellectual pygmies.' Michelle does swiftly point out that Peter is hardly Jeremy Paxman. She is feeling put out still by Peter's presence in the factory, and though he does it out of a spirit of care and thoughtfulness, Steve was misguided in thinking that pleading with Carla for time off for Michelle was a good thing to do.

Now to the real story of tonight and the heartbreaking news that Hayley's cancer is inoperable. With treatment, though the surgeon was quick to point out that everyone is different, and that he is speaking in averages, she might have a year, and without treatment just six months. If anyone needed evidence that often bad things happen to some of the nicest people, we have Roy and Hayley.

Everything tonight concerning Roy and Hayley was poignantly convincing. Hayley's need to to give Roy instructions about her life and what he needed to do was very psychologically real, the human need to get organised and put one's affairs in order. 'Literary nibbles' at the book group, where they don't discuss the book, was such an insightful and revelatory detail expressed so succinctly. The focus on the clock, the six hours in surgery required  for success, and the fact that she came back at ten past five. The emphasis on time was very moving, as time is all we all have.

I very much enjoyed these eps tonight - Corrie st its best. The Croppers, Fiz, Karl and Craig saga and the brilliant Steve made for enjoyable viewing. Love these little scenes we have of Steve talking about nowt - as Blackburn stated - back to the roots.

Kudos to David and Julie on fab performances tonight - a great partnership. Let's cherish these episodes we have left of them together.

It was so poignant. Roy and Hayley are two of the very best actors and characters. But where is Sylvia? It is so out of character for her not to be there. I'm shocked. Maybe Stephanie Coles is ill? And once Carl goes, does that mean stella will too? Hope so!

I just finished watching. I seem to have something in my eye.

Had to laugh at Michelle-yelling on at Steve about how Carla will think she's incompetent. She really thinks she's some sort of business-woman. Where did she get her degree again? Which office admin program did she graduate from-I forget.

I am not going to make it through with R Hales cancer storyline. I am in bits already - esp poor Roy - putting her wedding ring back on her finger.

Corrie fan..you need to catch up on some updates. Stephanie C is ill and she had a death in the family-brother I'm told. Michelle Collins (Stella) announced her departure from the show a couple of weeks ago.

Stephanie Cole brother died and she was going to leave the show permanently anyway they just decided to let her leave earlier its on twitter. It would have been a better storyline if Hayley got Prostate Cancer because she used to be a man

For me, the scene that absolutely nailed it tonight was Roy's phone call to Fiz to let her know that everything was not okay after Hayley's operation. Fiz KNOWS this lovely, gentle, kindly man, knows how he loves his Hayley, and knew instantly the dread significance of Roy's abbreviated communication to her - "no" - in response to her query whether the operation had gone well. She knew Roy had simply to be told that it was okay to return to his Hayley, and told him to do so, though the news she had inferred had devastated her almost equally.

Her tears as she ended the call and gazed at the photo of Hayley cradling her infant daughter seemed to be very real, and the whole scene was beautifully played, the love and the closeness between Roy, Hayley, and Fiz shining out.

I kept finding something in my eye. Beautiful. Heart-wrenchingly, exquisitely, beautiful, and some of the best acting I've yet seen on Coronation Street.

Respect is also due to the writers of that scene where Roy called Fiz, for knowing that sometimes less is more.

I thought the Roy & Hayley moments tonight were sad and so well done by them. That's exactly how you'd expect Roy behave, fussing over the ring & all the small details etc. And the call to Fiz was the bit that got me the most. She knows him so well and urged him to go back to Hayley....a simple no was all it took from him and she dodn't need to press him for more.

To be honest I still get the warm fuzzies seeing Tyrone back to his old self and not constantly watching what he says or looking over his shoulder. To see him and Fiz together joking & laughing is quite touching after all he's they've through.

The Hayley cancer story has just started here in OZ and it is heartbreaking. The acting is great and last night I had tears in my eyes when she told Roy all she wants is a hug from him.

Everyone involved with Hayley's story has been superb. Very moving and tough to watch.

This hour long episode was perfection. I'm in floods. When Roy found Hayley's ring in his notebook...

Even evil Karl couldn't detract from all that. The real evil here is cancer.

I'm sure we'll be treated to lighter moments along the way as this favourite Corrie couple live their love to the hilt in H.'s remaining time.

WHY was Roy on his own at the hospital - why wasnt Fiz or others there to support him?. The whole Platt clan including Beige and Boria were there cluttering up the hospital when Nick was comatose? Good episodes yesterday helped by no Gail and that flamin' face!!!!

Thankyou - finally for some old magic of Corrie street. The touching scenes of Hayley and Roy doing her bucket list after being told the results of the operation and that call between Fizz and Roy - yes a special moment. Magic.

I've watched ten years and never cried after an episode.... until last night. I mean, good lord. David Neilson and Julie Hesmondhalgh deserve to win every award going after this, especially if these performances are signs of what's to come (which I think it is)

I've got something in my eye as well. Roy, Hayley and Fiz were superb; the clock, the ring, such attention to detail. I can't quite figure out why Fiz would have been in their apartment (must have been originally a Sylvia scene) but it created one of the best scenes I've ever seen on tv. Wow!

Yes I wondered why Fiz was at Roy's, and I think you're right, it should have been Sylvia. The writing team have got it spot on, congrats to all concerned, but it's going to very hard watching Hayley's departure. So can we have a little light relief along the way please.

LOL! Gail's face looks like a turtle's face to me. I always laugh at the funny faces she makes at times. So funny. :) -Pod
