Coronation Street fans of the week - Cathy and Michael in Canada

It's time to meet another Corrie fan of the week! And this week we've got two.

Who are you and where are you from?
Cathy (and Michael Walsh) from Edmonton, Alberta,  Canada.

How long have you been watching Corrie?
FOREVER! Coronation Street has always been a part of my life, but my first real attachment formed in and around 1979 when I'd come home after school and it would be showing in the early afternoon. After that, as I grew and went through the rest of school and started my career (and before we had a VCRs and PVRs to tape the shows) I would catch it when I could - usually during the Sunday morning omnibus, when the CBC would broadcast the week's episodes. I met my husband in 1986, and found out he too was a fan, and he had watched Coronation Street virtually his whole life too!

In the 1990s I found Glenda Young's Corrie updates - my memory is fading - it was either like a BBS board, or sent via e-mail. Her wit and humour added dimension and colour to the Coronation Street stories. Ever since then, I rarely miss a show, and always read the updates too (here in Canada the CBC seem to remove bits of the show, and the weekly Corrie updates fill in the gaps from time to time).  The best part is, my husband and I enjoy watching the show together. He claims to not be addicted as me, but he's always found hovering in the doorway making loud remarks to the TV, like groaning with an interaction between Fiz and John Stape, rolling his eyes at Peter, Leanne and Frank, or cheering on Julie when she stands up for herself or a friend.

Who are your favourite female and male characters - and the reasons why?
I absolutely adore Julie and Eileen. Julie for her wardrobe, loyalty to her friends, and because she will drink too much when nervous.  Eileen for her wit, patience, and being so frank. Of the men, I love Sean because he plays his role perfectly and without restraint, and that's exactly how it should be. His facial expressions are the best.  The other is Simon, because my husband and I both think he's one of the best actors on the show.

What's been some of your favourite Corrie storylines over the years?
My favourites are always the incidental story lines that fill in the background. Most recently (in Canada) is the delightful and fun to watch relationship forming between Julie and Brian. Ken taking a reluctant Deirdre to a pottery class, only to have it backfire and she becoming the enthusiast was terrific. The way Deirdre is oblivious to how awful her work is, and the looks of people who are gifted a piece of her art is marvellous.

And what would your fantasy Corrie storyline be?
A special edition show where some of the cast come to Canada for a visit. We are completely crazy for Coronation Street in Canada. The CBC has learned long ago, if they mess with the scheduling they have to give us advance warning. They do this by announcing a schedule change via a crawl at the bottom of the screen - and usually happens around NHL (National Hockey League) playoffs.

Have you any snippets or news about meeting any of the Corrie cast, or trips to the set, etc., that you'd like to share?
Once, when visiting London (years ago) I was in a hotel bar having drinks with a friend, and we met two men who claimed to be writers, or friends of writers, or friends of friends of writers for the show. It didn't matter. We were impressed.  :-)

Fellow Corrie fan in Canada here. My only complaint about Corrie is that we are so far behind what's happening across the pond. Even with the CBC attempt to catch us up, it still isn't right. Thank goodness for blogs like this to keep me up to date!
