What is with Phil Collinson? Why won't he allow any straight, fanciable men to be half normal on Coronation Street?
We've got newcomer Frank Foster who's going to turn nasty and rape Maria and now that Claudia/Audrey (Claudrey?)'s boyfriend Marc is on screen finally we have a bit of man-totty for the older lady viewer to ogle over her tea and biscuits. And what does Phil Collinson go and do? Turn him into a transvestite and then have him beaten up.
Come on, Phil. Give the straight men on screen and the straight female viewers at home a chance to enjoy Corrie a bit more than we do.

I so agree with your comments re Phil Collinson . I suspect he will turn out to be the least popular producer ever on coronation street. Why is he getting rid of Eddie Windass ? Steve Huison and Debbie Rush
Have great on
Screen chemistry and there have been some really good storylines for the characters to get their teeth into both with the army and the fostering storylines. I fear he does not know his audience and is not objective enough to make Good decisions for the characters. I will be really sad to see Steve Huison leave . His antics were hilarious and added to the seriousness of other characters storylines . Providing sometimes much needed relief !
I agree. I can't sit through another Gay or tranny storyline. It's getting really pathetic. My Mom who was a die hard Corrie fan stopped watching when Sophie came out. She has nothing against the lifestyle but it seems that just about every 2nd person on the street now has some sort of sexuality issues. Enough with this garbage already. Corrie is going to the dogs. Sorry but I really feel that the producer needs to go.
Fire Phil...
Re: the previous comments to this post. Really? Every second person on the street has some sort of sexuality issue? How many characters are on the street? Sophie and Sian don't have a 'sexuality issue' - they seem pretty clear about their sexuality at least in terms of each other. Sean Tully is pretty clear about his sexuality - no issue there. Same for Jason's brother. Seems the only person with 'an issue' is this new fellow, and judging by the beating up he's about to receive, it's everyone else who has an issue with him, not him with himself. Get over yourselves. Sorry your mum has stopped watching but that says more about her than it does about the show or Phil Collinson. I for one have been watching the show since 1981 and have loved it for what it is; and ever since the Sian/Sophie story line has come to the fore, I've been impressed and even more engaged with the show. Phil Collinson has been doing a great job, and it's time that the show brought in new characters that show the diversity of the world we live in.
Plus you all say this as if it's just Phil coming up with the ideas, forgetting totally about the writers and storyliners, the ones who actually come up with all these plots. I don't mind this storyline, sure it's an unexpected twist, but we don't know where it will lead after this. Plus we don't know if Marc is actually gay, not all transvestites are actually gay.
Life imitates art.
I am finding that to be the case everyday.
Phil is the producer...he says what goes. End of. If you don't like my comments, don't read them. It is ONLY a soap opera...right?
I can't believe the ignorance in this post and the comments. A serial killer every few years is alright, but we can't be having too many gay people?! The vast majority of the straight males on the street are very much "normal". And person who's mother stopped watching, just so you know, Sophie/Sian were planned and started before Phil came along.
There's plenty of straight men for women to enjoy - Peter, Jason, Ceiran, Gary and Kevin (for specialist tastes of course on the last one :P)
I don't see the big hoo-har about all this personally, does it really matter about the characters sexuality? That's not what is important to me, the actual character is important to me, Marc's character is a cross-dresser? So what? That's just part of his character, he's still the charmer that Audrey met in Claudia's salon, and he still will be. Seeing him get attacked is aimed to tug at our heart strings and make us feel sorry for Marc.
My two cents. :)
Cheers Chewy! Whatever his kink, it's about ratings, I can't wait for that sotry line to unfold.
**Also, as a huge Rula Lenska fan, I 'm just happy to see her more ofetn on the show; I bet Claudia will have a few choice words when truths are revealed.
-two more cents :)
BTW, transvestites are not gay. They are straight men who like to dress in female clothing once in a while. It has nothing to do with sexuality or sex. Eddie Izzard is quite open about this in his own life. And he's just an ordinary blokey bloke. Should be an interesting storyline.
I agree that the gay characters on Corrie don't have issues with their sexual identity. It's others who have issues with people being gay. It may take some viewers out of their comfort zone sure, but perhaps it will help some families who are struggling with this very issue in their lives. Or would the naysayers rather it just be swept under the carpet, or worse? Using the excuse that there are "too many gays" on Corrie is just a smokescreen for homophobia. Is there some magic cutoff number of gay characters allowed on Corrie?
He's a transvestite not gay! Jeez, why can't people make the distinction between the 2?
It's got nothing to do with sexuality. It just shows peoples ignorance.
And I agree with Simone, more Rula Lenska is a good thing.
Yet ANOTHER beating. Corrie is getting far too violent. Where is the quirky charm that made it our favourite soap for 50 years? Get rid of Mr C which stands for something unprintable in my opinion.
Look, I'm loving the Sophie and Sian storyline and can't wait to enjoy the gay wedding of Sean and Marcus (if it's true that it'll happen). I know the difference between gay and transvestie and would never, ever promote any homophobic ideas on this blog. Anyone who thinks otherwise doesn't know me at all. However, all I'm saying in this blog post is that as a straight woman who wants a bit of man-eye-candy on Corrie I'm very disappointed in the new men being introduced to Corrie - Frank the rapist, Marc wh gets beaten up for being a transvestite (why does he have to get beaten up? why can't he just be a transvestite who we get to know on the show as a person?), Chris the wife-beater, and Ken's son the homophobe. What's there to "enjoy" watching these types of men? And yes, I know it's only a soap and if everyone was a dull as Ken Barlow we'd all be switching off ;-)
No straight men? So what are Ken, Peter, Steve, Kevin, Tyrone, Roy, Chesney, Kirk, Gary, David, Nick, Tommy?
I think most of the comments came from the second reply to this post and not from Flaming Nora's post.
What the hell is wrong with some of these people... not happy if they're not complaining, these things DO happen in real life, i should know, the Sophie/Sian stoyline is really positive, in my opinion, isn't that good & rare for a soap ? I do understand everybody has their point of view but please if you don't like it don't chuffin' watch it !! Simple, so there... Haters, i hate them, mumble, mumble
Well..I'm not watching a Gay soap opera...simple as that. Sorry if that upsets anyone but that's how I feel.
I think people who very rudely call other posters “ignorant” just because they don’t agree with them are pretty ignorant themselves actually. It’s called an OPINION and we can’t all agree on everything and it would be a dead boring world if we did. We have our different likes and dislikes and takes on everything and that is the whole point of these boards. To tell someone “not to watch” if they dare criticise anything is just plain infantile.
I truly dislike anonymous posting and wish it weren't an option; it's too easy to flame & hide.
I don't have a problem with gay characters per se. It's a city, not the suburbs, 2011, get real. My issu is that they're all so normal, nice & lovable, yet most of the straights so very flawed. Dierdre, Ken, Sally, Kevin - affairs; Peter - drink; Eileen - theft; Steve, Becky, Tracy - criminal records; ..... versus ditzy Sean, boring sweet teen lovers Sophie & Sian, professional Marcus, wise & cultured (and very missed) Ted. The most they'd ever do would get them a ticket, not a day in court or night in jail. I'd like it more if the gays were just as flawed as their neighbors and had rich stories on how they fail & overcome.
Kinda agree there Abby. Definitely agree with what you are saying, Nora - it does appear that Phil has a slightly disturbing agenda for unpleasant characters and storylines. The show is far too negative at the moment, I agree that it's becoming like Eastenders.
The older I get, the more I wish Corrie *was* like it used to be in the 'good old days'. Why do we need to have sensationalist, ratings-grabbing stories all the time?
Re: gay storylines, nowt wrong with 'em at all - what I'd like to see is fully rounded gay characters, with everyday problems.
Not hiding this time, to the person who called me 'infantile' how am I? I just don't understand people who are clearly upset about gay, transexuals whatever storylines, keep on watching, if all you do is complain, that was my point. yes I am GAY, & for once in a soap Sophie & Sian have lasted, I don't think that some people realise how important this storyline is to younger viewers who are going through the same ****, trust me they do help, That's all.
I guess I missed the part that this was a 'soap opera'. Maybe there'll be a Marcus/Sean/Todd fiasco coming up...would be interesting.
I see nothing wrong in soaps covering gay, lesbian and transvestite issues by having such characters in the programmes - they're all part of life today!
As a straight tranny, most of us are - and there are a lot more of us than you'd like to think, I think it's good people have to deal with how they feel avout these things. Looking at the postings, it seems we are a long way from acceptance. I think the beating up is also realistic as for most of us who go out over any period of time... it's reality. I've been attacked and abused in the past, but it just makes me feel sorry for the weirdos who feel threatened by people who are more confident with their sexuality than theybare. Grow up or go back to school and maybe one day....
