Corrie set to be turned into a theme park?

The Mirror today suggets that the current Coronation Street set might be turned over to fans as a theme park if/when ITV move to the new site at Salford Quays.

It's all speculation at the moment, as at the end of the article a Street spokesperson says: "We are currently discussing a number of options," which means nothing's been decided yet.

The set's been closed to the public for the last 11 years although Canadian fan groups are fortunate enough to have been allowed access. But if/when Corrie does move to the new site in Salford, would you want to visit the current set if it's no longer being used for filming?  I'm not sure I would, to be honest. I'd be much more interested in seeing the new set.

Recycled news from the recycled newspaper.

It's Trafford Park, not Salford Quays... and the site isn't being "considered", it is under negotiation, and is reserved for ITV until the papers are signed, or the plans fail.

The theme park idea is to sell it to the adjacent Museum of Science and Industry who would create a "Corrie Experience"

Yes i'd been told it would probably be annexed to the museum as well. I think it would prove popular for the museum since most people wouldn't get to see the new set. It's as close as they'll come.

It's not the original set at the moment. It's the third or fourth incarnation. The original was on Water Street (no longer exists) but still opposite Granada Studios. It faced another way completely. Saw it in 1969 when Granada had an open day for Corrie and other series that it produced. Then they moved to another set away from the studios as they did with Albion Market. Then I think this current one may have been next and includes bits of other streets. So this isn't the same set that has been used for all 50 years, only about 20. Pam-UK :-)

I saw it about 20 years ago, and still remember the eerie feeling it was to walk down the cobbles for the first time. I'd assumed it would just feel like "Ah yes, there's the Cabin, and there's Vera's house ... ho-hum" but it felt almost dream-like for the first few minutes. To find yourself INSIDE an environment you know so well but only from the small screen. I'd be delighted if they open it up. And I'd hope that any such 'Corrie Experience' wouldn't be a static thing but would be updated regularly to ensure it continues to resemble the current actual working set (ie, collapsing viaduct &c)
Speaking of which, has anyone else wondered what's actually going to be at the end of the street when the viaduct does fall down? Would Weatherfield council rebuild it, following a tragedy? They need something there for the background problem.
