Coronation Street weekly update – March 6, 2021

Corrie weekly updates from 1995
All the wit and warmth of Weatherfield
None of the waffle - and all for just 99p

One of the strengths and joys of Coronation Street used to be the delicate mixing of light and shade. With every sad story on the street there were a couple of laughs in the Rovers. With every tear that fell, someone smiled and broke your heart. Well, you get my drift. What I’m trying to say is that this week there was still far too much shade and not enough light. And we all need more light in our lives, now more than ever. That’s not to say that everything is bad news right now, indeed there has been some great moments and I even punched the air with joy at the end of this week’s episode so read on to find out more.

It's Dev’s birthday and Nina helps Asha create a scrapbook of photos of Dev’s late wife Sunita and his kids. It’s a nice touch from Nina who seems to have been backing away from getting involved with Asha and her family. Nina is more mature than Asha, older, wiser, an old head on young shoulders. It’s an interesting dynamic to watch.

Over in the Rovers, Daisy sets Jenny up on a date with the fella who was giving Jenny the eye in the Bistro weeks ago. Jenny is furious when she finds out what Daisy has done, but Daisy reckons Johnny is taking Jenny for granted and she needs to spread her wings.  In prison, Johnny is still hallucinating, and thinks he can see his late son Aidan. He doesn’t want to take his medication as it’ll stop the hallucinations and he enjoys seeing his son. Jenny has a stern word with Johnny and tells him to choose between the living (her) or the dead (Aidan) and we see Johnny pop his medication into his mouth, his choice made.

Yasmeen’s on edge this week, brittle and scared and it was uncomfortable to watch as the ghosts from Geoff’s abuse continue to haunt her. When Tim tells her he’s giving her his half of the house that Geoff has left him in his will, along with his share of Speed Daal, she’s overwhelmed with anxiety and suffers a panic attack and - HOSPITAL KLAXON ...

... is rushed to the Kate Oates memorial ward at Weatherfield General. But later at home – and this was the moment when I punched the air with joy – Elaine agrees to Yasmeen’s offer to move into the house with her. Yes! The two of them living together, exorcising Geoff from their lives, is a wonderful idea. What can possibly, er, go wrong?

Up in Leanne’s flat, Simon gets more involved with evil Jacob, and this kid is a marvel to watch. I have no idea who the actor is, I don’t want to know, and won’t look him up on Google or follow him on Twitter. I am fully engaged with the character of Jacob, troubled and alone, bullying and evil, dealing drugs, being horrible to Leanne and controlling Simon. Leanne, still suffering her grief over Oliver’s death has a breakdown and cries to Simon who tells her he’s selling drugs to support them: “You can’t pay the bills with tears and feathers!”. Leanne decides she needs support from Peter, who’s too ill to be told what’s really going on. He’s so ill, he’s doing a 1,000-piece jigsaw of zebras on a bread board in the Barlow’s house, and that’s not something I’ve ever said in a weekly update before in the 25 years I’ve been writing them!  I think Peter’s going to need a bigger board, but I digress. It’s Carla who Leanne ends up confiding in about Simon and Jacob dealing drugs and Carla puts the frighteners on Jacob. There’s a flicker of fear across his face when Carla tells him to leave Simon alone, but it’s gone in an instant and he tells her he’s not scared.

Elsewhere this week, Paul moves in with Daniel and baby Bertie, which I’m liking very much.

And that’s just about that for this week.

Can't help feeling there will be another death on the street before long. Either Harvey is killed by another drugs baron and Jacob scarpers, or Jacob gets mown down in a revenge attack. Please let Simon join the navy which was his plan when he was 16. Plenty of possible return storylines in a few years' time.

Yes, Simon leaving for the navy after this drugs plot line would be good.
There's too many teens on the street - Max Platt, Dev's twins, Amy Barlow, Summer, Kelly, Jacob and Simon.
How old is Alina pop! Daisy, Alya, Ryan, James, Emma and Nina? Early twenties?
