Coronation Street Episode Review Monday 1st April

At the pub, Jenny nixes Scotch eggs for Rana's memorial in favour of vol-au-vents and canapés. Why not both? Artisanal Scotch eggs are very on trend at the moment. Wayne turns up to tell assorted Connors that a structural report has been done on the factory roof and Peter asks Roy to ask Wayne to go easy on his on/off/on girlfriend. With misgivings, Roy does so, but Mr Hayes tells him that business and investigating the inscription on Roy's mum's ring don't mix. Wayne's re-bonding with Roy is obviously to test his loyalties - ex-foster child or daughter-substitute?

Carla tells the po-po that she didn't know anything about the roof and it was all Pat Phelan's fault. This doesn't satisfy Imran, who reminds Carla that perverting the course of justice is a crime, which leads Ms Connor to what is no doubt the first of many breakdowns as she tells Peter she has to come clean. In the meantime, Kate asks Carla to come with her to the flat to help her get ready for the memorial takes place in the community garden. Robert kicks off, announcing to everyone that Carla knew the roof was unsafe and Kate begs Carla to tell her that it's not true. Whilst Carla can lie to the coppers, she can't tell fibs to her (half) sis and admits that she knew the roof was unsafe. Now it's Imran's turn to kick off, punching Peter as he tries to defend his girlfriend and Kate smashes a bottle of wine at Carla's feet, before forming the Bring Down Carla gang with Imran as they turn up at the cop-shop to dob her in.

Food is the menu tonight as Sally gives away Tim's bacon in exchange for porridge and demands that he eat an apple rather than the chocs Kev has brought 'round. He is Team Gina, telling the Metcalfes that they should say something (preferably "thank you") to Gina G S before she goes to Newcastle. Sally tracks Gina down (not hard, she's hanging around Dev's) and asks her not to leave. She and Tim both forgive her, but Gina decides to leave anyway, saying she'll be back.

Gemma's in her sparkly mermaid onesie, lying on the settee on "sick leave", licking sauce off her plate. No doubt that's a turn-on for some, but Chesney shows some justifiable irritation. Gemma shows her parenting skills by taking Joseph to the dentist - but then lets him stay off school for the rest of the day, gives him sweets and offers him Nightmare on Elm Street (she had a crush on Freddy K when she was younger). Paul turns up pretending to be the cops as an April Fool (perhaps he should have gone with "Winter is coming"?) and thus there's an extra slob on the sofa. Billy, or rather Joseph, borrows Roy's squirty ketchup bottle to play another April Fool (surely it's after midday by this point) this time on Chesney, as Gemma is tied up and covered in "blood" in the yard. Given that Chesney was stabbed not that long ago, it's not really that amusing.

In comedy (sort of) news, David slaps product on Sean's chin that brings him out in a rash, bad enough for him to cancel his date with Bob the posh builder. Sinead remembers that she used to make soap (and murderous candles) and offers to make organic beard oil for It's Trim Up North. I hope she makes some weasel oil also.

And finally, Miss Precocity (Summer) tries to tell Billy what to do with his love-life (date Paul).

And that's about it for Monday!

Could someone tell me please how Robert knew about the roof being unsafe?

He was on his balcony and overheard Carla telling Nick the roof needed replacing and it would need to be closed for months. It was why she was trying to outsource in order to ultimately save the workers their jobs.

He also overheard Carla telling Nick that she didn’t want a business partner who launders his divorce money through the business, and Nick threatening Carla that she will regret trying to cut him out of the factory. Surprisingly, Robert didn’t bring up these things he heard. Wonder if he will in the future...
