By the end of next week, Peter Barlow will be off the wagon and heading towards Carla. Both situations make me kind of sad. I'm not surprised about the booze thing, it's in Peter's personality, I think, to give in to it when things get rough. I'm also not surprised that he is finally going to admit how he feels about Carla.
Soap triangles are a staple, the stuff the genre is made of. Marriages never last for long. Each storyline has its own way of being told and we don't know how this one will come out yet. Here's my take on it. How do you think this will end?
Edited post-blogging to add: Also, Inside TV has a great interview with Jane Danson and Chris Gascoyne on just this very thing!

Go go round...again and again with Peter/Leanne/Carla...Peter falls off the wagon. ugh
WFT..any original ideas out there? How about Peter and that loser Tracy getting together..they aren't blood relatives. How about Eva has a fling with Nick and rubs Leanne's face in it and THEN has a one off with Peter...just to add to the misery? I hope they have a wedding for Rita and Denis but I doubt it...another heart attack and deathbed scene I think.
I'm disappointed that it's become a physical relationship. A passionate unconsummated affair would have been much more interesting and damaging to a marriage. But here we are with a now fairly predictable route for the characters. In my view, the reason Peter and Carla won't work long-term is that they are too similar. They will end up destroying each other unless a parent figure like Leanne steps in and gives Peter a wake-up call. She (and his parents) will remind him he's a grown-up with a young child. No doubt, he will be desperate to foist Simon onto any member of the family (Leanne included) so he can have a trouble-free love nest. If the Barlow clan gangs up on him and insists he takes responsibility for Simon, the relationship is doomed. Peter and Carla will both descend into alcoholism and Carla will find living with Peter is not so much fun as she thought. If you're a romantic, you might call them star-crossed lovers. But I don't see any redeeming qualities in Carla, just a 1 or 2 dimensional Dynasty character. Then there's the reality of finance. Will Peter be able to keep the bookies going if he's incapable most of the time? Will he fly into drunken rages or perhaps they both will. Their relationship is based on fantasy and lust. Sadly, that's a recipe for disaster but it could make rivetting telly!
Wouldn't it be great if the writers gave these three excellent actors something more orignal, interesting and exciting to do?
There's absolutely no reason for Peter to fall off the wagon at the moment or suddenly get together with Carla. In the past year, we have had Molvin, Peter Leanne Nick, Graeme Xin Tina, Chris Cheryl Lloyd, Tina Dr Carter Tommy, Steve Becky Tracy and probably many more I've forgotten. I'm sick of love triangles and couldn't care less what happens.
I woujldn't say there's no reason for Peter to fall off the wagon. The anniversary of the tram crash is next week and that is going to unearth a lot of unsettling memories for more than a few people.
Everyone always says the producers should come up with something more original than a love triangle but what do you suggest instead? Love triangles attract viewers. Fact. And I for one am really enjoying this particular one, I love Carla's character but I also have a soft spot for the Peter/Leanne/Simon family unit.
As it's a soap it will probably end in tears for everyone involved. But like it or lump it whatever happens I'm sure, considering the actors, it will be amazing viewing.
Absolutely, anon! I don't mean to imply that I think it's yet another reetitive storyline. Trianges are standard stuff and i don't mind them but i am sad to see this one happen though it's been on the cards.
If Becky is leaving they should of had her dying of lung cancer from smoking too much.
