Corrie set to break soap rules with Eileen Grimshaw storyline

Sue Cleaver, who plays the wonderful Eileen Grimshaw, has told the official Coronation Street website at itv.com/corrie that her upcoming new story on the show will contain something that has never been seen on a soap before.  We've already blogged in the past that Eileen's new fella Paul will have a bit of a secret which could affect his chances with Eileen.

Sue hinted about Eileen's upcoming surprise when she told ITV: "Eileen and Paul are going to get on well, they are going to have a relationship, but as usual on this street, it will not be plain sailing. There'll be some issues to get to grips with and get over, that I think are going to make really interesting viewing."

She added: "It's not something that's been done before, I think, on soap - so keep watching!"

Never been seen on a soap before? What on earth could it be? Leave your guesses below!

They will have an old fashioned traditional relationship, marry, sleep together after the wedding, and something that's never been done.... they live happily ever after???? Amazing though, how ridiculous does that even sound eh in this day and age?

lol Beth.
I can't imagine soaps haven't covered just about any situation in some fashion.

How about Pauls's brother is his identical twin and they are both romancing her, I don't think that's been done before.

he will probably turn out to be half brother...just like Julie turned up to be half sister...ewwwww

I hope it will be something good but i get the feeling that after all the publicity of 'something thats never been done before' the storyline will turn out to be a far fetched failure

Perhaps he's a hermaphrodite?

Paul could be a transgender and Gail will discover 'he' used to be an old female school chum of hers. Perhaps Paul won't have gone fully transgender with surgery and Eileen finds there isn't any requisite male equipment....

I've been wondering about this all day. Inside Soap say that Sue's quoted as saying the storyline is relevant for our times. Incest has been done in a big way (Brookside) and child grooming was done on Corrie with Sarah Lou and the hairdresser, so it's neither of those. I reckon he's either an Al-Qaeda terrorist or addicted to internet porn or gambling.

Any more ideas? This is intriguing me!

Yes,Flaming Nora, I think it could be internet porn, or child trafficking. Another thought. Have we done 'spies' yet? The day job is simply a cover for his work as a government agent.

i think he's a gay 'trainspotter' anorak type and will secretly be eying up roy and norris!

Maybe he'll turn out to be a hoarder!

What ever the story line turns out to be; it'll be a let-down after reading all these suggestions lol!

They haven't done slavery or cannibalism either - and that is the way this soap is heading....

Perhaps Paul's a Pimp?

My, my, CS bloggers, we have got some glum imaginations, lol. I hope that the ptb are a little more cheery that us! :)

I have worked a fair bit with trafficked children and charities and it's a huge passion of mine. There is nothing I would love more than to raise more awareness on this but are these heavy issues that are dealt with in Corrie/ EE and others entertainment and do they have place in a soap?. A very big question and a grey area. Most certainly a drama and a documentary but Corrie is getting grimmer and darker by the episode and it's not what I would call 'entertainment' but more an 'education' these days.

Take the Mark/ Marcia storyline. It was more a public information film from start to finish and quite obvious it was done as another "First" rather than properly and sensitively as M/M has now disappeared and we've all 'learned our lesson' and Corrie producers congratulate each other in pipping the other soaps to getting it done first.

Apart from the train spotting/ Norris affair suggestion non of them sound appealing, more getting me to reach for the remote control 'off' button. I hope it's not OTT sensationalism for the sake of it. We've had enough crime on corrie to last us a life time this past year.

Bet it won't be something cheery..... that's it!!.... that's the shocker!!.... IT'S SOMETHING CHEERFUL!!!

Paul will reveal himself to have a third leg, hitherto concealed by special trousers. It will take Eileen some time to get used to which leg he wants to get over.

I think Paul will be married but it will turn out that his wife is dying or something like that and she is insisting that he meets someone new and makes a new life for himself.
Eileen will meet the wife and after a heart to heart will accept to continue seeing Paul.
Eventually the wife will die and Eileen and Paul will live happily ever after.
Or has that been done before?

C.S. and E.E. consistently mirror each other's story lines; it's almost predictable.
They often occur within weeks of each other; I wish I'd made a list with dates.
One credit that C.S. has retained, and which I believe E.E. does attempt to emulate, albeit within the confines of it's 'tough' image,is it's humour and light-hearted moments.
Although viewers can expect grimmer and more explosively sensational story lines while C.S. attempts to garner some major awards, the generally superior acting and writing of c.S. will keep us all watching.

he's an alien from planet mars.

Lol love the suggestions! I'm going with a guess he is a secret self harmer because he can't deal with the horrors of his job?

Paul was Pauline I'll bet

Paul is a "friend" of Liam Fox

I think Paul's wife has early-onset Alzheimer's or something similar - dementia or even psychosis.

They'll get married on the actual chosen day without either of them failing to turn up, or losing their way to the church, or being interrupted by someone at the "if anyone has any reason why these two..." point, or dropping dead, or being captured by terrorists, or deciding they can't go through with it because of [see guilty secret in previous suggetions] or a cat-fight breaking out among the bridesmaids, In other words it will be a wedding where they end up married at the first attempt. That'll be a first, won't it?

I think that it will be Albert Tatlock coming back from the spirit world.
