This has got to be one of the saddest days of the Coronation Street Blog's existence. I'm sitting here on the laptop with a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes on hearing the news that Betty Driver has died.
Tributes are coming in from Corrie cast to Betty, a true legend, and the only person this fan could call a Coronation Street 'star'.
Coronation Street executive producer Kieran Roberts said: "Betty was a wonderful actress and remarkable woman. It is humbling to think that the 42 years she spent on Coronation Street was just half of her extraordinary career but Coronation Street certainly benefited when she decided to join our show in 1969. For more than four decades she delighted many millions of Coronation Street fans with her fantastic performance in countless great stories both dramatic and comic. Betty was always a delight to work with and whilst there is a great sadness at her passing away Betty will be remembered by everyone on Coronation Street with tremendous admiration and affection."
Simon Gregson, who plays Steve McDonald, said: "I have known Betty since I was 15 years old, we always had a very good relationship and I was fortunate to be one of her friends and I am going to miss her."
We all will.

So sad to lose someone like Betty and her wonderful sense of humour, both on and offscreen. I hope they show that TV documentary again. I'm sure there will be lots of postings about Betty, all saying what an exceptional person she was. I'll leave it to the more eloquent posters to put it into words.
Gutted!!! But not unexpected. What a trooper she's been in the last year or two when her health has obviously not been that great. She will be greatly missed.
Even caustic old Frosty has a tear in his eye. Betty was one of the late greats, a memory of the old lovable Corrie. I know she has been unwell lately and hasnt been in it much but she will be sorely missed - I wonder if her secret hotpot receipie was taken with her to the grave. RIP.
You can get a sense of those cast members who are popular behind the scenes and I am sure Miss Driver was top of that list. She clearly defined the word trooper and lived a fascinating life. Sad news.
What are the specifics on her passing. How old was she? Was she ill? Was it sudden? So sorry to hear this. I'm in the US so we are far behind in episode broadcasts, so I just recently saw her on an episode...very confusing.
I have only just heard the sad news. Betty was a Lady. A Lady of kindness, and unmatched talent. I miss her, we all will. When I think of Betty I can hear her laughing. I will remember her that way, full of fun. RIP Betty with Freda.
A tribute to the amazing Betty Driver. She was a stalwart of the street and will be sorely missed.

Feel free to add your memories of Betty. Her hotpot and no-nonsense attitude were legendary. RIP.
This wasn't unexpected, but nonetheless I have tears in my eyes at the news. RIP, Betty.
RIP Betty, you'll be sadly missed.
Very sad news; she will definitely be missed. It's hard to believe she was 91; she always looked great and you could tell that just like her character, she was sharp as a tack and nobody's fool. A big loss for the Street and her fans.
Very sad news. Amazing that she was still acting at that age when most of a similar age are bed bound in an old people's home. Her wit and dry humour will be greatly missed. I am only sorry never to have tasted one of her hotpots.
So our dear Betty has gone off to cavort with the always amusing Blanche. It was far too soon as far as I'm concerned, she will be missed by many for a long time. I will miss her little comments, always perfectly placed, I know its the writers who put the words in her mouth but she was the one who could deliver those lines ever so wonderfully. Rest easy dear Betty.
A dedicated Canadian Fan.
I loved the character of Betty and I will miss her lovely smile and quick wit...
