Oh for pity's sake no! I'm gay myself and even I think having so many gays and lesbians in one little street is ridiculous... it's Coronation Street, not Canal Street for God's sake.
Sorry it's too much! Is this Phil's agenda? Sorry to say, Kim Crowther's reign was better! No street has that many homosexuals!
I dont know lesbians seem to be like buses at corrie. Wait 50 years for one then three come along at once.
Oh God, more gay characters?
I have nothing against them, but this is TOO MUCH.
Actually Sian is leaving soon so it will be the same number of gay characters. Also doesn't Manchester have a large gay community? it would make sense if the city itself has a larger than average gay population that the surrounding area would be higher than average as well. Plus with Sian leaving it would make sense for Sophie to have a new love interest.
scifiaddict86 .. where has it been reported that Sian is leaving? I missed that one!!
Corogaytion street.
Would anyone be saying there are too many black characters? And it would be more realistic if any of the existing gay characters did anything more than kiss. Sean has not had a boyfriend since Marcus left.
I'm leaving Corrie to the gays. They have taken it over. Pity.
It used to be family viewing, now it is self-indulgent rubbish.
^^Corrie can do without viewers like you. Perhaps you would like to ask "the gays" in your family what they think about Corrie not being "family viewing".
@Coronation Street Corner/Seanie. I think you will find that there are many streets in Manchester that have more gays than in Coronation Street. Funny how you think this is too much, but you don't mention the serial killers, attempted rapists, thieves, murderers and attempted rapists living on the street.
@JohnMcE There are so many positive gay role models that we can't possibly do with any more. We need to go back to the good old days when gays were invisible, unless they were like Mr Humphries in Are You Being Served. NOT.
Congratulations on encouraging the homophobes.
John McE... Thanks for the laugh spat my coke all over the keyboard ! A real LOL :D
Oops - Hadn’t read the other comments before I posed my previous and now see - John McE gets a bashing for his previous post. Sian might be leaving so a new lesbian girlfriend magically plops conveniently into the pub. Wouldn’t’ it be more real were Sophie go meet her new girlfriend elsewhere and bring her to the street - nothing to do with homophobia.
Leaving aside the question of how many gay characters there are on the street and whether or not Sian is leaving...isn't a character played by a 27-year-old going to be a bit old to be a potential girlfriend for a 16 year-old?
I am sorry but Phil Collinson is making Coronation Street ridiculous now thrusting his opinions and ideals on to the soap. Read the critics reviews, its going downhill fast.
You are aptly named Mary Whitehouse.
I dont have a problem with gay characters whatsoever but I do think their introductions can at times seem a little contrived. There are gay people out there who just happen to be gay and dont have a thing for the first other homosexual they meet. I just hope the writers remember this when they introduce her. As for the posters who will switch off over it all I can say is that they will have someone gay or bisexual in their family. The fact that then street represents reality in having such characters will make it all the easier for these members of the family to live their life as they wish without being condemed. What would be even more realistic would be the introduction of a married man who has tendencies.
Oh my Gawd!!! I have got nothing against lesbians, but another one will increase the total by 50%!! At this rate, they will be filming Corrie in Lesbos!!!
Sorry everyone, but I forgot to complain when they introduced Sylvia. I'm not ageist or anything, but there are quite enough pensioners in the Street!
It's the 21st Century and a national disgrace that the country's favourite soap should have a diverse cast of characters. I don't care whether they are entertaining or interesting; it's their superficial characteristics that count!!
I think they should introduce an athiest into the mix on Corrie..they'd get a right real carry-on then. Emily going all crazy Xtian trying to convert him...or even better..a 'gay' athiest..wouldn't the shit just hit the fan!!
Another lesbian character is TOO MUCH! The lesbians will outnumber the murderers! How unrealistic is that? I'm fine with one small street housing 2 murderers, not to mention the attempted rapists, kidnappers, burglars, embezzlers, fraudsters etc. But another lesbian!!! I really must protest!!!
It's outrageous that Collinson is pursing his agenda of having gay characters wandering around breathing, talking and even kissing!!! Well, once in blue moon for the kissing. Coronation Street is family viewing and needs to provide wholesome entertainment like in the past. Give us more murders, rape, adultery, abortions, children having children, violent deaths, wife beating, armed robbery......
Atheist... I can’ t say that I would make that much of a difference. I’m sure if you sat many of the current residents down over a pint most of them would be. Very few of them are Church go-ers and you had to pick on Emily as an example which was VERY stereotypical as the token Christian pensioner. The reason that Sian and Sophie were converted was to highlight the gay-Christian storyline which in my humble Christian opinion was done very badly. Sophie fell off the roof the vicar saw the light and changed his mind and welcomed them back – rubbish! there are plenty of openly gay vicars. Now that would have been a good and interesting story! Why give us such a prejudiced AND “typical” vicar! As for Collinson pushing his own agenda – he said he would and so he is..... so no point us arguing over it. I’m sure we all would all push our own agenda just how far is the question? (He doesn’t’ seem to know when to stop with any storyline though).
I've only ever met a handful of lesbians in my life - they all looked like blokes.
That's all we need another flippin lesbian on Corrie. I for one will not be watching it any more.
Gay characters never last long in soaps normally and I feel Corrie has it right. People need to get a grip. We don't live in the 18th century now you know. The more minority groups are shown the more people will become use to the idea thats THEY ARE EVERYWHERE not just hidden for one off story lines to shock.
@Anonymous "only ever met a handful of lesbians - they all looked like blokes"
Maybe you appeared to judgemental for the more shy ones to come out to you. I'm a lesbian (definition girl who likes girls, so what?) and I look like....... a girl funnily enough. Yes there are a few butch lesbians, who are the ones who stand out, but man, open your eyes, most lesbians blend because they look so, what you narrowminded people call 'normal'. I have long hair, wear makeup, dresses etc etc etc. It's what society needs to see 'normal' people who are cast as lesbians on such a popular show as this to realise that discrimination against gays is just downright wrong. It's not a criminal act, it's not wrong, it's just love. Get over it.
P.S. @Anonymous "Gay characters never last long in soaps normally..."
You are awesome. :) Thank you - the world needs more people like you.
