Four characters axed?

The People reports that four characters are set to face the axe, they are Sian Powers, Chris, Cheryl and Russ Gray. Sacha Parkinson recently signed a new contract which will keep her in the show until the end of 2011, so the exit, if true would happen in 2012.

Craig Charles will also be taking a break towards the end of this year to film new episodes of the brilliant comedy series, 'Red Dwarf' though he will return sometime next year. On the topic of returns, the same article also reveals that Dev Alahan's daughter, Amber Kalirai, who will apparently experiment a bit with Sophie Webster!

Overall these sound like good decisions, the Gray family have never really fit into the street. I kind of like Sian, so I'd be happy if that part of the article wasn't true, and the news of Amber returning is fantastic, lets hope she's just as cheeky when she arrives back!

So glad Cheryl and Russ are going....I suppose they didn't quite know what to do with Chris - a redeemed wife beater? Doesn't quite work.

Glad about Amber's return as well!

Cheryl was OK as a small part player as a friend to Leanne but never worked as a main character and just seemed to be annoying. Russ was just gormless, what happened to the story when he was supposed to be the gifted child, did that get dropped? Chris never did anything really apart from beat up Jim and take his clothes off. Never liked Sian, pretty but a poor actress and another weak character. I presume Amber's return means the Alahans are sticking around, they are another pointless family that need to go.

They are bringing Amber back but getting rid of characters like John + Graeme? What a complete disaster.

I won't miss Cheryl and Russ Gray.
Sasha has denied she's going anywhere on Twitter. I guess time will tell.
I wonder what uni will have done to Amber's character?

Sian can't be axed! If she is then i'm not continuing to watch corrie! Sacha is such a great actress, especially with Brooke. So i would definitely be disappointed to see her go :(.

If the previous rumour of Chris returning to his violent ways comes true, then I can easily see his leaving. Cheryl and Chris were always pointless so i guess this will leave Lloyd holding the mortgage on his own.

I would love to see Amber return but it'll be a bit of a squash in Number 7. Still, Graeme and Xin will have vacated the shop flat so that will be empty.

Glad to see the back of all these characters. None of them are remotely interesting. Frank the Flesh Crawler should be axed too.

Good decision to let cheryl and russ go. Personally I would like the writers to let the chris character fight his demons further. I am surprised if it's true that Sian will go as I disagree with bloggers who feel she is a poor character and poor actress- I think she has played out extremely well. Do you think that Amber will be recast or come back as the same actress? I hope its the same as I really liked her before and never really understood why she was sent off to uni never to even visit. The clash of Devs two families could be very interesting and Norris will be pleased to have another gossip in the street!

Are we positive that this story is true as it hasn't been confirmed by ITV yet? I think the Amber part is true because Antony Cotton tweeted that he was filming at the Rovers with Amber. However, I would take the rest of this story with a grain of salt until we receive official word.

IMO, I hate these cast culls that soaps do when a new producer enters the picture. I know it's necessary but it always stings because there are certain characters that always get cut that sting. It's like what they do in the WWE as every year they do a spring cleaning of certain wrestlers that don't work. But in the end, you soldier on!!!!

I am overcome with excitement regarding Ambers return as it gives a glimmer of hope that there will be a smidgin of comedy in the show!- Micky

Oh, goody...more gay storylines. THAT will get the viewers flooding back.

Not.

^^ Glad to see that in such a short time you have polled the entire population of Britain about which stories they want to see in Coronation Street.

If Sian is leaving, that makes sense, as Sophie is her only tie to the street, so if they break up, Sian has no reason to hang around - she'd go back to live with her mum, presumably. And let's face it: how many teen romances last the distance?

Surprised they'd write out Lloyd, Cheryl and Russ after going to all the trouble of moving them into the Peacock's old house as a family unit. I'm just glad Lloyd isn't going permanently, though, as he's a great supporting character.

Just seen Holly Quin Ankrah confirm on Twitter so I guess it's true for at least her!

Thats fantastic news! Yah more Amber!

Axing Sacha would be a terrible idea as even if you don't like the whole Brooke and Sacha thing, they have breathed new life and brought a new audience to the show. I personally think they are a good pairing and plenty of characters are on the street with ties to only one person or family.

I hate to say but there is one character who I think should go - Gail. Her constant smothering of David and Nick really irks me and I would like to see what the Brother's would do without their Mother's influence.

YES YES YES AMBER!!!!!!!!!!!

Personally I will be disgusted if they have Cheryl and Chris get back together. What kind of message does that send? Maybe there are men out there who 'reform' but not many - what that usually means is that they swap physical abuse for mental. No better but easier to get away with. Really feel disappointed that Corrie have missed an opportunity here to deal with a proper meaningful storyline - the kind of thing they should be doing - to focus on ridiculous melodrama.

Chris and cheryl wont get back together surely not. Will probably find Lloyd cheryl and russ flee from him. I agree that up to now the writers have not really addressed Chris' anger issues but perhaps thats whats coming up leading to their departures?

I've never seen the point of the Gray family, but their characters would be rendered even more useless if the rumour about Chris getting back with Cheryl is true. However I like Sian, and although Amber's return is good news I don't think that she would suit Sophie as well as Sian does.

Would love to see Amber back... but I find it unlikely that she would end with Sophie?
Hope that she's just back for a visit, as it's nice to see a teenager from the Street actually going to uni, instead of dropping out of school for an illustrious career in a greasy spoon/newsagent...

I believe Cheryl, Chris and Russ should all go. They bore me to tears. As far as Sian leaving that's not good, I really like her, better than Amber, don't bring her back. Not a pretty face to look at. Also when are they going to bring in a guy who is good in the looks department. LOL
