Coronation Street episode review, Thursday February 2

This episode was mostly devoted to a tense, dimly-lit two hander as cheating Peter and wronged wife Leanne had a tearful showdown following his courtroom confession of his affair with Carla.

Angry and sad by turns, Leanne - tearful, red-rimmed eyes running with mascara - laid into a cowed Peter with venom over his various affair-concealing lies such as his supposed greyhound viewing activities: "One thing is true - you were going to see a dog." And (having been filled in on the truth by mum Stella) Carla's clandestine Christmas necklace: "She got the bling, I get the booby prize."

Even so, by the end, Leanne surprisingly still hoped they could repair their marriage, but Peter had to admit he could not as he wanted to be with Carla, saying: "I wish with all my heart it had never happened but... we love each other and want to be together."

In a surprise twist, it was Leanne, telling Peter, finally: "You should have died in that tram crash, done us all a favour... still you'll probably kill yourself with booze now," - who ended off walking out when it might have been assumed she'd throw her errant spouse out.  She disappeared into the night in a taxi "to stay with Toyah" as poor little confused Simon was left sadly in the lurch in the street, crying for his stepmum.

Hats off to the writers and to the fine performance of actors Jane Danson and Chris Gascoyne -  it was all very raw and believable. I think we will need a renewing dose of Coronation Street humour for the next episode, though!

Just perfect last night. I actually wiped away a tear. What amazing writing; and acting by Jane Danson, Chris Gascoyne and Simon (can't think of the actor's name). I think Jane Danson asked for a few months off but, whatever the reason, it was a good twist. Peter probably thought he could palm Simon off onto to Leanne while he feathered his love nest. No doubt, he'll expect Ken and Deirdre to step into the breach. I know Peter and Carla have a lot of fans, but apart from the trial scene, I've always thought of Carla as a cold fish. The chemistry between Peter and Leanne far outstrips anything going on elsewhere.

Agreed an excellent episode with the finest actors on the Street acting their socks off as ever. In fact the writing seems to have improved of late, I wonder if there are different writers on board. It made me really hate selfish selfish Peter and the dreadful emotionless witch that he has decided he can’t live without and hang everyone else. He will be regretting his decision that’s for sure, with the usual soap line – “How could I have been so stupid”.. No doubt his poor child who has been through enough in his short life will now be palmed off on grannie and granddad while he cavorts with his mistress. I found the scene where Deidre had to ask Stella what was happening with HER family a stretch too far though.

Wow! Just saw this episode this morning. POWERFUL acting! Jane and Chris are incredibly talented actors.
And who didn't shed a tear at the end .... with Simon's grief? Poor little guy!!!
I'll be really happy if that man-stealing bitch Carla gets it. Never liked her and her nasally voice from the get-go. Hated her even more when she played around with Liam. Despise her now! And when is Maria gonna say "hmmmm ... wait a second ... she stole MY hubby, then steals Leanne's hubby ... maybe she IS a Class A Bitch"? And maybe Michelle, too, will realize Carla is responsible for the death of her brother?

Look forward to seeing this in Canada.. they are both really great actors. Think that both Peter and Carla have been incredibly selfish (although I say this with some fear..don't want to be accused of being a "hater" by Carla's very loyal fans!).. Peter especially though.
Wish that Leanne had actually gone through with adopting Simon so she had some legal rights to him.

Interesting twist to the story where Leanne leaves and I agree, Peter probably didn't expect that and just assumed she would stay and look after Simon while he dilly-dallied with Carla - good for you Leanne!...well except for poor wee Simon...awwwww. Seems Sally has been taking classes from the Tracy Barlow school of evil and nastiness - I wanted to slap that gleeful smirk off her face when she announced to all and sundry in the Rovers the fact that Peter and Carla were having an affair - oh you are going to get yours Sally and I hope it's more than Frank 'cheating' on her according to a spoiler I read.

Have to agree the writing has really improved of late and the class acting made it all so fantastic in a heart-rending way. I thought little Simon was in a league of his own; I was in bits at the end!

Now, can someone help me out with this. Did Leanne call Stella 'Mum'? And if so how long has this been going on? Have I missed something here?! (wouldn't be surprised if I had!)

She did call Stella 'mum' last night, think it may have been the first time, I'm not too sure but I liked it. I can see now why they brought Stella in for Leanne cos the only family she's got on the Street since Janice's departure is Peter's.

Amazing writing, amazing acting made for an incredible episode. Jane and Chris were at their best as ever, as was little Alex Bain who really tugged on my heart strings.

Have to say though, although I think Peter is weak and spineless I was impressed last night when Leanne said she might be able to forgive him and he said no. Usually just expect him (like most of the men on the Street) to take the cowards way out.

Agree, excellent acting. Very odd to hear Leanne call Stella "mum". I hope if they did infact bring Stella in to give Leanne a family member -they send her (Stella)off to give Leanne comfort and forget to bring her (Stella) back.
