Coronation Street Episode Review Friday 18 December 2020

Much of this evening was taken up with good (almost but not quite) Todd seeking to get along with Paul and Billy (it turns out an Archdeacon has the job of standing in at Christmas for a vicar with toothache), even volunteering alongside Paul on the "Not the Samaritans" helpline, spotting the gay team leader and generally acting out of character.  Meanwhile some kid (Will) has been bending only Paul's ear on the helpline, refusing to speak to any other volunteer and alleging that he is being abused.  Paul breaks the rules and gives out his personal number and agrees to meet the kid (who is scared of his step-father) at the back of Roy's Rolls.  Later the kid, no longer limping because he has taken the ball out of his shoe, meets evil (almost but not quite) Todd in the ginnel, receives his £10 acting fee and seeks to find out why Todd is playing games with Paul.  Todd's explanation that he wants to split Paul and Billy up but he does not know what he is going to do next is so weak that I rather wish it was (almost but not quite) Todd who was still missing rather than Rick Neelan.

Talking of Rick Neelan - do you remember his watch?  As found by Bernie (formerly Sue Clayton of this parish) in the woods and the to do between Sarah and Gary over it?  Good because the rest of us had filed that story completely.  Did you know that the reason Bernie did not hand it into the police at the time was because of the virus and she thought the police station would be closed (no the only place that has closed and has still not re-opened is our local surgery - seeing a doctor is actually more difficult than buying a bitcoin).  Anyway DS Willets asks a lot of questions and his colleagues are digging in the woods.  Gary reckons that Sarah has told Crimestoppers - but she denies it - he just tells her that if he goes down he will make sure they know that she also was instrumental in perverting the course of justice (above).  So it looks as if he will get away with it as he also threatens to tell the police about Callum's death.

"How do you solve a problem like R'Shona"? are not the lyrics sung by the Mother Superior but they echoed throughout the show this evening.  She gets a telling off from Nina for causing upset in the cafe when Simon had a go at Carla as provoked by Shona.  She picks up Ray's keys off the cobbles (still safe at the moment) and takes Simon for a drink or ten in the Bistro; is it a good idea to introduce an alcoholic's son to the hard stuff?  Well it was only cocktails and as it is not Emmerdale it is not real alcohol.  Shona locks them in and then mislays the keys unable to find them when she is pie-eyed (which is reality is not much different to the normal Shona these days).  She had left them in the fridge.  They get out just before some guy turns up for a meeting with Ray and Debbie.  Waiting for her outside is David and Daisy who had earlier been sharing a drink in the Rovers.  Daisy did not explain her re-appearance tonight sans boyfriend but no doubt we will hear more on Monday.  At the end of the day David tells Gail that he is fed up with the new Shona, her unpredictability and lack of improvement together with the constant upset being caused.  He is obviously considering a new pasture (above) potentially with lots of Daisy in it.  And is there anyone out there who decorates her bathroom for Christmas as Gail does?  Later Ray goes to study the CCTV to see who was drinking at the last chance saloon earlier in the day.

Debbie is sticking her nose in.  First she tells Faye that she is sure she can find a better job than window cleaning.  Abi tells Debbie to get lost.  Later Debbie goes to see Kev and Abi; the prodigal sister gets a less than friendly welcome as she tries to explain plan B which does not need the garage.  Kev is not falling for it.  He has been shafted and even if she did not know she will benefit from it.  Debbie, mysterious guy (Miles Ingham) meet in the Bistro.  The mysterious guy reckons that Ray is short of readies and is willing to offload his hotels.  Anyway Debbie is full of spite following her familial discussions and once Miles has gone tells Ray to turn up the power - Plan A is the only plan.  Apparently the investors have a what's app group (which for some reason Debbie is not included - her exclusion makes no sense).  Except that the rest of the investors call her Karren behind her back - after Baroness Brady - who is no property developer but is in fact the much respected vice-chairman of West Ham United Football Club and sometime sidekick to Lord Sugar - the UK's answer to Donald Trump.  I actually don't think the nickname is that bad!  And once she has told Ray that they are back on Plan B Ray reacts as above - like most men he just wants to know that he is right after all!

In other news R'Toyota is going to be fostering children as approval has been given; Nick is leaving voicemail messages for Sam and Leanne is unaware that Simon is drinking.  No sign of Peter or Carla and only a brief sighting of Jenny who was on her own behind the bar.

Slightly ho hum as we pick up the pieces from last week and are obviously setting up for the inevitability of the big events on Christmas Day.  And as an indication of the exotic links which exist in soaps, Jane Hazelgrove (Bernie) in real life is married to Isobel Middleton who was at one stage Anna Tregorran in The Archers and only this week has turned up as a grieving daughter in Emmerdale to have her late father dug up.  Talking of The Archers reminds me - where is Moira?

Ms Kelstar will be doing her stellar turn in these shoes next week.  Enjoy.

Daisy is so annoying. What is she for?

The writers have sunk even lower when they had Tracy drug Roy with a date rape drug to win a bet[and get away with it]with despicable Todd paying a boy to pretend he's being 'abused' by his father to get rid of Paul out of Billy's life.
This storyline shows no respect for victims of abuse, physcial or sexual by having Todd attempt to ruin Paul's life just when he's putting his life back together and dealing with his past by helping other victims.
I wonder if Todd would have gone through with his plan had he known that Sarah's daughter Bethany was a victim of sexual abuse as well?

Thanks, Kosmo! Always enjoy your blogs here. This new Todd has me annoyed a lot too. Old Todd, when he was not plotting and being nasty, was just a regular part of the community. New Todd is so obvs always scheming, which we can tell from his "scheming" facial expressions that the camera always closes in on. There is no person in there. It's boring. Todd was never a villain, just a guy who came back from that London with issues to work out.
