Greetings Corrie fans, it’s Kelly here with your Christmas Day review. Apologies for being a day late, but Mr Kelstar is a Corrie hater and I decided to be kind and give him Christmas Day off (like Bob Cratchitt).
Well, it turns out that unlike most soap Christmas Day’s it is the season to be jolly in Weatherfield (for most people anyway).
Over at No. 8, Max and Lilly are opening their presents, and Shona reveals her present to David…a six-foot stuffed rabbit. He loves it and they have a tender moment before there’s a scream and Lilly gets a bead stuck up her nose. Do 7-year-old kids still do that sort of thing? I thought they just sat playing games on their phones until early arthritis set in. Anyway, they take her to A&E where one and only nurse, Aggie (see one and only constable Craig) is working and Shona cheers a nervous Lilly up with a joke about bunny farts, which was about 100 times better than the one I got in my cracker this year.
Meanwhile Toyah and Imran are happily fussing over baby Mason. Although they seem to have bought everything a baby could possibly need, he’s still crying so they enlist the help of Gemma. To Toyah’s dismay Gemma pulls a dummy out of her pocket and shoves it in the kids mouth which seems to work. I shared Toyah’s concern at this, if my pockets are anything to go by it would come out covered in fluff with half a Strepsil stuck to it.
At No. 4, Elaine gifts Tim all the presents she bought him when he was aged 1-16, which Geoff wouldn’t allow her to give to him. Tim looked a bit weirded out but covered it well. I wonder if he was worried his Mum was going to insist on completely recreating 80’s Christmases by working her way through a family box of Roses, sticking the Chas n Dave’s Christmas special on and taking blurry photos of Fay with a Polaroid Instamatic?
Over at Yasmeen’s, Ryan, Alya and Cathy are gathered for Christmas lunch. Yasmeen puts on a brave face, but the house still holds terrible memories of Geoff and his bullying. When she sees one of his red crosses, it triggers a panic attack and a vision of the hideous waste of organs shouting at her. Have they still got Ian Bartholomew on contract? Is he going to be popping back from the dead until Easter? Luckily, Elaine comes round with a card, (she must have left Tim playing Pac-Man) and tells her that it will take a long time to get over Geoff, but that she has her family to help her get through it.
Out on the Street, Jenny is serving gluhwein to all the residents when Gary turns up like the bad fairy at the feast. He’s furious at Sarah, who he blames for Maria dumping him, and challenges her to say why she lied to the police about staying in all night on the night of Adam’s attack. She reluctantly admits that she went to the factory to send an email to a client ‘from Carla’ which would make her love-rival look like a total berk. Carla forgives her though, and the ginger gangster is forced to slink off back to his garage. Anyone else wonder why he wouldn’t ask Anna if he could spend Christmas Day with her?
Talking of Adam’s attack, the man himself has come around and is insisting it was Peter who attacked him. Peter denies it and Daniel questions whether he could have seen who it was in the dark, but Adam claims he could smell the whisky Peter was drinking. This all seems a bit open and shut for me. Could someone else have worn Peter’s whisky-stained coat?
Back with the Platt’s, Shona gets jealous when she sees Daisy flirting with David. Realising they both still love each other they decide they will stay together and David makes a romantic gesture by recreating their wedding. As he, Max and Lilly chase a delighted Shona around the Street with silly string (also very 80’s!), the residents look hopefully out of their windows and the snow starts to fall….awhhhh well that was lovely wasn’t it.

Also please cast your votes for best insult of the episode. I enjoyed Elaine calling Geoff a “stain of a man”, but it’s facing very stiff competition from Shona’s “oi moose-face”. Let me know in the comments or on twitter @mskelstar.

I was a bit confused by Elaine saying all the presents she sent Tim got returned to her. That means Geoff must have known where she was living and I thought she has escaped from him to somewhere he couldn’t find her.
I agree,Sue. Also wouldn’t Geoff have been more likely just to bin the gifts, rather than go to the trouble of returning theme very year?
I thought that, too. And in the hospital it would have needed a doctor for an invasive procedure to get the ball out of a nose. So many loopholes but we still love it!
Given all the regulars who are not around very much, I don't understand the sudden need for the presence of Jenny's niece Daisy in every episode. Well, I suppose it will become clear.
Peter is always a suspect in these things and he always turns out to be a red herring - he just isn't violent by nature, he's had loads of well-provoked opportunities to turn to violence and never takes them. So having him named this early means it once again wasn't him!
Returned to her might not mean directly to her. If you buy a gift and ask the store to send it from their premises the receiver wouldn't know your address. But, if the receiver refused the gift or marked it return to sender the store would get it back and refund you so that you'd know your gift was returned.
I would have thought Geoff would have given them to Tim and said they were from him.
Anon15.51. But she didn’t get a refund, she had the gifts returned to her. Pre being able to shop online I don’t know of any shops that would post something for you anyway.
Im heartbroken for the little baby. Did not seem comfortable or without pain on sunday nights episode. Also Toyah did look very uncomfortable.
It would be more Geoff’s style to return the presents, possibly through her sister’s address, in order to make his point and ensure that she KNEW they were unwanted.
