60 years ago, a gentleman named Tony Warren came to Granada with an idea. Warren envisioned a television programme set in a small street in Manchester that followed the lives of working class, ordinary folk. The name fluctuated between Our Street, to the disinfectant sounding Florizel Street, and eventually we were welcomed to Coronation Street on December 9th, 1960.
Six decades later, the street has seen it all. There's been devastation and demolition. Births, deaths, and everything in between. We've seen the residents endure the best and worst days of their lives as the most famous cobbles in the world developed into a British institution.
Like millions of other people, I've grown up with Corrie. There's characters I love, and characters I've loved to hate. The essence of Corrie is unparalleled as the mixture of drama and comedy is what has made it unique from the very beginning. The witty one-liners can be hilarious, while in the same episode you can have a huge storyline reaching an emotional peak. Always staying true to the reflection of people's lives across the country, many storylines have had profound shockwaves that have sparked essential and life-saving conversations.
To put it simply, Coronation Street is more than a soap opera. It's a community, love, laughter, heartbreak, and tragedy. The ripples it has in the real world are astronomical and Corrie really does change lives- I know its changed mine. In times of loneliness, I find familiar warmth in the brass theme tune and a trip to the Rovers.
On Monday, we were gifted to a wonderful tribute programme narrated by Joanna Lumley, celebrating all six decades of the nation's favourite soap. It was quite frankly magical as we relived some of the most heart warming and heartbreaking scenes and storylines.
Particular episodes and storylines will always stay with me. When the characters you've grown to love have something happen to them, your heart is with them completely. The joint work of the writers, storyliners, actors, directors, and everyone in between all tie together to create something incredible. As the anniversary episodes kicked off this week, my social media has been full of fans from all walks of life coming together to celebrate one fascinating little street.
I could talk for hours about Corrie, so please do share your favourite Corrie moments with me!
All that's left for me to say now is thank you, Tony Warren, for creating a place that we can all call home.
