Corrie Comicals Week Ending 11 December 2020

60 and not looking a day over 25.  From episode 1 we have the now standard method of not telling the truth as Linda does not tell Elsie that she is pregnant!  Fascinating to me was the wall behind Elsie where years before Hilda the three ducks are in residence - apparently Linda brought them with her the last time she left Ivan.  Later in the episode did the Barlows have a real fire in the grate?  It looked like it!

Turning our attentions to this week on the Street we started with a voiceover from Imran preparing his closing bulldozer of a speech for the court and the camera pans around the other residents - Leanne packing so taking a wrecking ball to her relationship with Nick and the Street, Carla ruing her casual demolition-type decision to bed Adam and finally Imran remarking on Yasmeen's tight knit community which as we know the smiling Ray (above) is about to bring physically crashing down around everyone's ears.

Kev is waving around some silver foil which he reckons is not from a Kit Kat wrapper; Abi (with uncanny accuracy) identifies the culprit as sister Debbie and (above) she responds with a direct blast at Abi's mental health.  Kev does not know what to think but Debbie can sense that the tide is turning and battle should commence so tells Ray to get the heavy mob moving and tear down the brewery sensing that time is not on their side.

Carla does not reckon that a wedding in Cephalonia is the best they can do - how about Vegas and getting married underwater with mermaids in place of bridesmaids.  Is the real Carla back in the house?  But the real laugh is when Peter wants Si and Daniel as his "best men".  At this point Peter thinks Carla has actually been doing the dirty with Daniel again; when he finds out that it is Adam will he want three "best men"?  Definitely a wedding plan being built on shifting sands.

We cannot let the week pass without Barbara Knox.  Audrey has just made reference to night time visits to the cludgie (Scottish terminology) and Rita tells how her mother used to hold a candle and gave young Rita the above instructions!  Jenny refuses to serve the pair another drink - not because they have not ordered a substantial meal (or even a scotch egg or two) but because with no power there is no till.  Eh oop lass - dig out slate and chalk - after all R'Audrey is good for it with the amount she is getting for selling the flat out from under Emma and Alina!  Once the dust has settled will everyone be buying their houses and flats back at knock down prices?  Debbie really will be on her uppers!

Debbie Oates was getting her plateful on Friday night dealing with the fall out from the roofs of the new houses, Jenny missing out on the chaotic explanation of how "Cougar Carla" slept with Blameless Barlow (above) who suddenly decides that he does want Sarah Louise after all - with both Sarah and Carla wishing that Adam was dead!  And where was Johnny whilst all this was going on?  Elsewhere Kev and Abi were saying a fond farewell to sister Debbie, so fond indeed that if she fails to pack her own bags Kev will deposit her clothes into the Street.

Meanwhile Sam (Jude Riordan) pulled out another stunning performance.  He finally got Leanne to listen to a list of all the things he can do and which make him special.  First up is his superpower - he is not afraid of spiders and is entirely capable of dealing with them.  And with no power, pizzas or (ex) partner as Nick is stuck in a traffic jam Leanne has no choice but to heed Sam's wise words.  And she later admits indirectly that he has changed her mind about leaving.

And a pay off for which I had hoped - but could not believe would happen.  Tim asked Elaine to stay and whilst I doubt that an actress of her stature will become a permanent resident I hope she can (as Elaine) guide and help Yasmeen's recovery and at the very least perhaps they could have a drink together after the funeral.

Down on the picket line Nina does not think much of disco music and wants to play something from her phone - and then is completely non-plussed by Evelyn's comment on the boombox having a C60 slot.  I always preferred a C90 but the quality of C120s was never very good and it was certainly not really hi-fi!

My initial theory is that someone did not look too closely and came in to do over Ray Crosby but having watched it again the Bistro Ninja this time must be Gary who wants to settle a few scores with Adam - he knows that Adam is alone in there and does not want Adam ringing the police.  But is that just too obvious?  After "The Undoing" it is always the prime suspect what done it!

Friday night was a huge delight - some great lines and a who-dunnit to come - plus more in an hour than anyone might expect - including the lightest body bag ever!

Writers this week: Chris Fewtrell (Monday); Jan McVerry (Wednesday); Debbie Oates (Friday)
Directors this week: Neil Alderton, John Anderson, Nickie Lister (Monday & Wednesday & Friday)

Great week it was for the 60th anniversary episodes - three hour-long episodes (two set on the same night) 9 Dec, despite Abi stopped them demolishing the other half of Coro St and putting the whole Street to a whole blackout with the power and then the police finally turn up, they should've heard Yasmeen's shout but there were too far away and the protesters were playing loud music as they were camping out to fight to save their street.

As with the pantomime villain Geoff Metcalfe now gone, the future holds for the Metcalfes, as Debbie still wants to sell Sally's house and Faye's encounter with Ray Crosby, he was on the verge of raping her, but then again she walked away and later she would pack her job up at the Bistro where Bethany and Alya would have told her months ago, but then again she was still ignored, with the topic of the Barlows, as Adam was having an affair with Peter's partner Carla, as having already his son Simon was shouting over the odds of his drinking as he tended to be back on the booze, where they would have been married now in Catalonia, Spain and it was going to be a re-marry for Carla Connor for the second time, let alone last time when they did get married, he had an affair with Tina and then Carla was already pregnant weeks later, then after Tina died she had a miscarriage, as Adam's guilt drowned after his wife left, then his attacker approached at the Bistro and he was left lying on the floor to the sound of a Jake Bugg track on the Alexa.

Well think again back to the topic of ITV3, for the first time in their history, apart from black-and-white films, they showed two monochrome Corrie episodes on Monday evening at 10pm, the first episode and the 10th anniversary episode which wasn't in colour (as of at the time, ITV had a colour strike, same with Valerie Barlow's electrocution with the hairdryer was already aired in B&W over a month later), well I've checked my TV Choice today, ITV3 are showing Classic ED/Corrie episodes during the Xmas period (except for Christmas Day & New Year's Day), means the rest of 1997 will path to continue and also ITV have confirmed a new sponsorship for Corrie in the New Year (the 4th in all, Argos Catalogue).
