Well, the set builders went to the trouble of constructing that hospital set, they're dang well gonna use it. Kevin's busy palming his son on anyone who'll take him, without the bother of employing a childminder. Today, it's Sophie's turn as Kev is attending a conference. Sophie is distracted because a reviewer is coming from the Gazette and she wants the restaurant to look busy (on a Monday?). She sends a complainy Jack off to school, but he's sent home with a virus. Sophie takes him to the medical centre and they recommend rest. But he collapses and they take him to A&E. He's sent home (again!) with paracetamol and Ali pops in on him, notices the swelling on his foot and insists he goes back to hospital, where sepsis is diagnosed and the doctor tells them that the next 24 hours are crucial.
Tracy is busy planning her wedding, but first she's planning their (very short) engagement, which involves Steve finding her old engagement ring in his bag of engagement rings (? Really? Everyone he was married to gave him back their rings? Surely Karen/Vicky/Becky/Leanne and Anne of Cleves would've flogged 'em). She spies Ken in the street offering to pay for Daniel & Sinead's nuptials and decides that the offer extends to her and Steve as well. I think she still owes £10K to her dad after Ken remortgaged the house to pay for Tracy's legal defence following the lapdance/murder of Charlie Stubbs. Steve thinks he's found the ring, and presents it to a delighted Tracy, who thinks he's bought a new one, although it's actually Karen's. Even Gollum was not as desperate as Tracy to get his hands on a ring.
Simon's pleaded guilty to breaking into Daniel and Adam's flat and he's not only remembered Leanne's birthday, but bought her a pressie as well. He then apologises to Roy and Alex and does washing up at the cafe, where Tyler comes in and pretends he's forgiven Simon. He takes a free sausage sarnie but then later shoves it under the fence at number 1, where Eccles finds it and snaffles it up. Maybe an animal hospital extension can be built on the set?
Talking of bad lads, David is starting community service so Shona says she will take him out on the town and Bethany offers to look after the kids and give them a makeover. Unfortunately, David is not keen on Max's Bowie's look and sends him upstairs to wash it off. Later, David talks to him and says he doesn't want people getting the wrong end of the stick. Is David becoming homophobic?
Audery's sent Emma over to ger her special coffee (I reckon she slips gin in it) and to flirt with Seb at the caff. Later, they go on their date, earwigged by Tim, who wants Seb and Fay(e) to get back together. Seb finds the courage to tell her about the HIV, but she misunderstands and thinks Seb wants to get back together with Faye, which it turns out, he does. The coffee obviously doesn't agree with Audrey as she chews out Maria over her reorganisation of the stock cupboard and takes offence when Michelle specially requests Maria's crimping services.
There's some shenanigans with Michelle and Robert and the stock room, but let's draw a discreet veil over that, shall we? Robert is sick of a full house/flat but it looks like it'll be a full Bistro as well as Gary sacks Ryan over geographical incomeptence and Michelle offers him a job.
And finally, Flora gives Sinead and Daniel Rita/Sarah/Yasmeen's money to Sinead and Daniel to start a vintage clothes shop. Hey Sinead, 2005 called, they want their business idea back!

As the sepsis storyline is showing, it can be very hard to diagnose and most of us won't have a Dr Ali living on our street to take a personal interest. Who is this storyline aimed at? Given Sophie's frustration that she did everything possible once she realised Jack was ill, it seems like it's encouraging worried relatives to ask for more tests. That's just what A and E want when they're rushed off their feet. 'Are you sure it's not sepsis?' 'You've been watching Coronation Street, haven't you?' I'm glad Corrie is tackling this subject and they could also do a storyline on Lyme Disease (an infection arising from a tick bite) which can have devastating consequences. But these kind of storylines aren't just about giving a voice to those people who have been affected by it, they should also be giving advice about what to do if a situation arises. Perhaps we'll get some public information instructions as the story goes on.
Boring episode. Yes, I agree they built the hospital set but do we have to see it so often? I'm not keen on stories that have children sent there for diseases just so they can use the set --- so Jack takes ill and I'm sure he'll recover... then what? Kevin realizes he's a cheapskate for not hiring a babysitter while he attends a mechanic's conference? Do mechanics attend conferences??? Or Kevin realizes that his son needs a full-time mom so just when Jenny and Johnny's marriage hits the skids, he'll be pursuing marriage with Jenny? Ayee yiy yiy.... whatever.... I'm finding all the plotlines really boring with hardly any stakes involved.
A death in The Archers from sepsis and now ‘our Jack’...I know which set of scriptwriters will have handled it better. However, much more important is Audrey’s coffee. There is no visible evidence of Roy having anything other than a kettle in the cafe, yet, although there’s the occasional brandishing of a (non-recyclable?) cup, no one’s ever been seen inside Costa, nor yet the Co-op! Will they be closing soon?!
I thought there was a posh coffee machine in the cafe and that there was a bit of excitement when Roy first got it.
As I was reading this, one thought crossed my mind--perhaps the next time they do some sort of party involving costumes, Steve should go as Henry VIII!
