Dennis Tanner to have affair with Gloria Price

We already know that Coronation Street actor Philip Lowrie, who plays Dennis Tanner, will leave Corrie next year and today, the Mirror reveal that Dennis will have an affair with Gloria and break Rita's heart.

Or, in tabloid speak from the MIrror: "Lowrie will leave Coronation Street next year in an explosive storyline which sees his love-rat character embark on an affair."

Mr Curry Sauce tells the Mirror: “This is going to be a big storyline for Dennis and Rita and things are going to get messy. Rita is going to get her heart broken and Dennis really falls for Gloria who gives him a lot of attention.”

Well at least the powers that be have decided to write the character of Dennis Tanner out with grace and dignity, a manner befitting such a wonderful actor, and not simply reverting to the ol' explosive storyline exit

....Oh....wait.... :|

Honestly that street is going to look like a war zone after the number of explosions set to hit next year....

Not unhappy about this ending, although very sorry Dennis is going, and no big surpise as they are being shown to get on and they (too late) have softened 'Glo'. A mistake to have married him off to Rita whose character they seem to be ruining. Unfortunately the appalling way she has treated Dennis there is not going to be a lot of sympathy for Big Red.

Hmmmm...while this storyline doesn't come as a complete surprise, I just have some doubts if this is really going to happen. It was announced ages ago that Gloria would be leaving, whereas Dennis' exit has only just been announced. Would they really be able to co-ordinate both exits? I thought I had read that Sue Johnston has already finished filming...

I thought this would happen ever since they have been organising this gig

Queen beige Stella did warn her mother not to upset the apple cart saw this coming - poor Rita perhaps she is meant to be on her own hope the remaining year will be kinder to her.

Good, Queen Rita needs to be brought down a peg or two. She is just a vile character. And somehow its acceptable for her to put Dennis down, but Norris ever brings anything up she is down on him like a ton of bricks.

So that is Rita losing her husband who she treats like dirt, and her so called 'daughter' Tina who she likes to throw piles of cash at. 2014 sounds like a good year.

Another affair on the show....? These writers seriously have no imagination.

If these are the best writers that ITV has, what a sad state of affairs we've reached. It seems like no one on the show is behaving believably any longer. They're losing me.....

This is funny. I stopped in on this website out of curiosity. I stopped watching Corrie back in April and looks like I am not missing much. I just want people to know to know there is no need to waste your time time on a serial that no longer entertains, informs, or moves you. Yes, Corrie was once great, but they have moved on and so there is no reason for the fans to be stick around either.

They'd used Dennis so little, I was beginning to wonder whether the actor was poorly and requesting fewer appearances. But something doesn't quite add up. Rita was giving Dennis a hard time about spending her money quite a while back. The writers were either planning Dennis's departure a long time ago (unlikely) or more likely, as we've always said here, they had no idea what to do with him. Gloria's leaving so they create an affair out of nowhere to explain Dennis's exit. Rita and Dennis could have been a good team, but she was never allowed to lighten up. Instead of Dennis adding zest to Rita's life, she dragged him down. Shame.

More proof that the writers quickly dip into their box of three storylines (Affair/Murder/Gay) and call it "job done" before going off down the pub.

This reads like an April 1st story. Seriously? Firstly, Dennis shouldn't be going. Secondly, of all the ways he could depart, this is the best they can think of? Why couldn't the strife build up to Dennis hitting Rita? After Rita's experience with Alan Bradley, that could be the fatal blow (no pun intended) to the relationship.

These days this programme is nothing but increasingly far fetched affairs and I'm definitely in last straw territory.

Excellent, Dennis can take Gloria with him when he bogs off the Street!

"Love Rat Character"...I wouldn't have called Dennis a 'love-rat', Rita's been horrible to him, he was always devoted to her. Gloria gives him "attention" while Rita's been slamming Dennis. I wish the writers could have come up with more story lines for Dennis; although it feels his character never did get off the ground, right from the start.

This really saddens me as I adore the history of Rita and Dennis. I despise the fact they turned Rita into a shrew when it came to Dennis.
I honestly wanted them to eventually move in to number 11 so that the Tanner name would again be in residence there. Linda could have visited...even Linda's son Martin...so many possibilities from such a rich history to the origins of the street. It seems the 30 year set is gone now along with the memories of far better stories and characters...very, very sad...
Happy Christmas everyone!
Cheers

I don't see much history between Rita and Dennis. I think the writers tend to exaggerate their 'relationship' back in 1964. Its funny though how he always seemed happy and got along with other characters like Gloria or Sylvia, but with Rita he just followed her around like a dog.

No doubt with Eileen's relationship we must feel bad for Rita despite treating her partner like trash and trying to control them. I won't.

It has been a disgrace how little they used Dennis and Humpty is right, Rita dragged him down instead of him giving her a new outlook on life. I think Dennis is exactly the sort to be a love rat. He was like that back in the day and when he first came to the Street it had turned out he'd jilted someone at the altar because he didn't really love her after all. Rita really has never treated him like an equal from the start. I think maybe he and Gloria are better suited, both of them loving to have fun. It's just too bad they have to leave the show. It's also nice to see someone of the senior set besides randy old Ken Barlow getting some action! LOL

That explains the odd out of character behavior of Rita. The writers had to have a reason for Dennis to leave and her being turned into a tight fisted downright nasty piece of work would be one of the reasons Dennis decides to leave. I'm thinking this storyline came about when Gloria decided to leave the show. I'm wondering though, if there will be any sympathy left for Rita after he's gone. She's been so vile lately the viewers might just not care.
Really - not a good storyline for a woman who has been with the show for such a long time. Wake up writers - don't eff with the OAP's!!

If "next year" means the first few weeks of 2014, then it could be true. I read on Twitter Sue Johnston had her leaving do in early December, so the six weeks from filming to transmission would take us up to Jan/Feb.

This is not a major surprise. They've paved the way for a while now: Glo took a shine to Dennis from the get go and now Rita's being mean to him, they're practically being pushed together.

I'd rather they didn't write Dennis out, as it was great having him come back after 43 years. But marrying him off to Rita was a mistake in the first place: they should have had him being free and single, courting a load of ladies and having all sorts of jolly japes.

At least the door is being kept open for him to return.

All you high and mighty people forget that he lied to Rita but that's alright when he pawned of the his mothers wedding ring which he gave to Rita and also didn't tell her he was broke and in debt. So why she should be nice to him when she can't trust him. He ruined the relationship not her!

I think the poor writing REALLY becomes obvious when you compare to the current EE storyline- rivetting, and not the current in-your-face subtle-as-a-jackhammer contrived "plots" they subject us to. I have only been watching EE for a year, and CS for over 20, and honestly, the contrast is incredible. They should pilfer the EE writers if they have any chance of survival. The actors are good, but the stories are buffonish, 2 dimensional, and just plain stupid! David Wicks on the other hand is being a masterful genius. Buck up, Corrie!!

I am not surprised. I thought that Dennis was the ideal choice of a statesman to stand up while Ken Barlow was away.
Instead we saw a nasty vile Rita take poor Dennis down a peg or two while he tried to find joy and direction in his life.
Dennis is sexy, dynamic and fun - which a lot of the younger Corrie men are not.
I was glad that he seemed to catch Gloria's eye and hoped it would lead to something. Leave nasty little Rita to henpeck poor old Norris....she and Emily already have him downtrodden...so carry on.
Fly like a bird Dennis! Escape the clutches of Rita....I hope that Dennis and Gloria have a lovely exit!

Glad to see Dennis escape with Gloria. Nasty Rita (and Emily) has her hands full with henpecked Norris.
Rita turned so nasty so quickly on poor Dennis - it serves her right.
Corrie missed opportunity though...Dennis would have been excellent stand in for Ken Barlow while he was away....but Bill Roche is on his way back ..so all's well that ends well. :-)
