Fiz in priz!

It's the storyline of the moment that's making me feel a bit weary. The thought of yet another Corrie favourite slopping out in HMP Weatherfield makes my heart sink. It's a well-trodden path of course, thanks to Deirdre and Gail. Yet here we are again, another 'innocent' victim of the atrocities meted out by life in the north west.

Fiz, of course, used to be something of a tough nut in years gone by and this side of her character will hopefully emerge once more. However, I fear another few months of hackneyed 'Prisoner Cell Block H' types, all conspiring to make Fiz's life as horrendous as possible. Come to think of it, with that red hair and ranting voice, we may just be witnessing the debut of Bea Smith Junior!

Are you looking forward to the prison storylines or should we lock them up and throw away the key?

Tvor said...: I will be interested though i wish it wasn't so soon-ish after Gail was in the nick. I like the character of Fiz and i'm really hoping this will finally grow her a backbone and not go all mushy again when Stape reappears to "save" her; 7 July 2011 at 19:06

Humpty Dumpty said...: These fast and furious plots are getting beyond a joke. Fiz in the nick, then probably out in a trice. All forgotten and on to the next crisis. It doesn't make the soap pacey; it simply makes it impossible to get involved with the characters. I think soap interviews/magazines have a lot to answer for. In the old days, Corrie stories had to slowly build up to a climax because otherwise viewers wouldn't have had a clue what was going on. These days, the programme makers put a character up for an interview for publicity, of course, but also to supposedly explain their motivation, deepest feelings etc. It's nothing of the kind; it's to keep the viewers up to speed with what's going on without actually having to write a decent script.; 7 July 2011 at 20:21

Anonymous said...: Ah Val Lehman now there's an unforgettable character and lovable rogue! Fiz should take a few leaves out of her book. I am so over her she is a parody to me now, all woe is me and blithering. Am not looking forward to any prison scenes with her grassing up fellow inmates and feigning turmoil and I hope she disappears similar to Katie's mum (see Ive forgotten her already)...unless they throw Carla in there with her. John McE said...: The thought of four months of Fizz endlessly suffering at the hands of sadistic prisoners and prison wardens (less time off for a six-week holiday in the middle, complete with sun-tan when she returns, of course), is more than I can stomach.

And the Fizz we were first introduced to all those years ago, would surely be terrorising the other prisoners, and certainly not being a complete doormat.; 8 July 2011 at 10:12
Dolly Tubb said...: Some people keep banging on about too many gays on Corrie, when what they should really be going on about are the number of convicts and the dodgy penal system in Weatherfield which is clearly outside the UK jurisdiction. What with Dreary, Gail, and now Fiz all innocents to the slaughter, plus Tracyluv's murder conviction and ridiculous reprive. And then there's Big Jim in the Big House; Becky and Stevie Mac, David, Gary and the late lamented Graeme have all done time - anyone else I've missed?

And that's just the 21st century for starters. Corrie's a hot bed of crime methinks! Plus with all the dodgy coppers and murders and all - phew, I'd never live on Coronation Street!; 8 July 2011 at 16:41
Anonymous said...: They have totally destroyed the feisty character that was Fiz, and replaced her with a mewling, hand wringing crying dish-rag of a woman. OMG..can this story get any more pathetic? Really, even for a soap it's beyond the beyonds.

Anonymous said...: I think it would be more interesting (and frightening to youngsters and teenagers who watch Corrie) if they had someone in the prison who is a hard - nut (excuse my expression) like B.Smith from Cell Block H. This would probably help to stop youngsters etc from getting into trouble and not wanting to go to jail. They would need someone to act the part that is not a well - known character otherwise, kids would just laugh this idea off.; 5 August 2011 at 14:23
