Sylvia's background will soon be revealed which will help explain the way Roy's the way he is (and why we love him!). Corrie have had to build a larger flat above Roy's Rolls to accommodate Sylvia moving in with Roy and Hayley.
Stephanie used to work at Granada and once played bridge with Doris Speed, who played Annie Walker. She talked about comparisons between Sylvia and Blanche and said she'd once worked with Maggie Jones, who played Blanche!

I'm quite looking forward to finding out about Sylvia's background and I'm enjoying watching her as a character. Whilst her putdowns are nothing like those of a certain Blanche Hunt's, she adds a certain element of comedy and humour to the show which I believe is essential considering the ludicrous amount of dark storylines which have been featured on Coronation Street recently.
I haven't warmed to her yet I'm afraid.
Im with Seapenguin. Seems annoying, dont like her one single bit. Get rid of her and Keep John :)
To me, she comes across as more of an Ena Sharples or a Phylis than a Blanche Hunt. The thing is that Corrie has always had a sharped tounged OAP and was certainly needed...
I also believe she needs to bounce off more with the other elderly characters, although it's hard to think of Emily like Minnie Caldwell and Rita like Martha, as we know the backstory of both characters.
I agree, Sylvia is a bit more Ena than Blanche - so I don't really understand the comparisons.
As it is, I love Sylvia and Corrie has always needed a fiesty old battleaxe character. It'd be great to see her interact with Emily... she was great alongside that charmer Dennis Tanner last week! :D
Im with Seapenguine as well, I havent warmed to the character at all and she just annoys me and I find her a bit repulsive in a strange sort of way. And Nemo why do we need an old battleaxe anyway, there are enough gobby females in it already. Its obvious she was brought in to replace Blanche after Maggie Jones' untimely death but she wont ever replace her and she just doesnt gel, for me anyway.
I think we need to give her a bit of time to warm up, so to speak. We'll get the back story with Roy and his mother and i'm sure she'll show more sides than j ust the crusty old battleaxe.
I do think we need a character like that. She's not gobby in the way the younger characters are. She doesn't just mouth off and shout, and her attitude comes from a longer life of experience and probably hard times. That's the angle we need with the battleaxe, the aged Greek chorus so to speak
I think they should have used an unknown actress - yes I know Stephanie Cole is as accomplished actress bla bla bla, but she will always be Auntie in Dr Martin to me, with the similar persona.

When I think of Stephanie Cole, I automatically think of Tenko.
I like Sylvia and to be honest, I prefer her to Blanche, who tended to be too bitchy for my liking.
Once the back story of her and Roy is sorted I think she will improve. At the moment it seems a bit contrived as Roy has only ever talked of a terrible childhood- will be good to see another side to it all. The street does need a mixture of ages in its characters to bounce off each other. Where is the fun in the youngs wild ways if there is not an older to resident there to comment. THAT is what is missing at the moment, the aftermath of the sensational plotlines. Blanche was humourous yes but it was the fact that she was comenting on others behaviour that made the character.
