Ken Barlow gets attacked by grandson James

There's a bizarre Coronation Street spoiler in today's Sun that says Ken Barlow will be left for dead after being viciously attacked by grandson James.  The paper says James shows his dark side when he forges Ken's signature and takes out a huge loan against No 1.

This sounds ridiculous to me, but read on if you want to...

When Ken finds James has started to dote on has robbed him he is devastated. But when he tries to call the police, James - William's real-life son James, 25 - knocks him out, sending him crashing to the floor. James then panics and flees.

So sick of all this OTT drama. I've got better things to do with two-and-a-half hours a week than watch this relentless drivel.

Congratulations, Collinson. You win.

James has been so good to be true - it'd be nice to reveal a dark side to him.

You and me both Leyman Butler. More violence! Just as I thought James was OK and a decent guy. We had exactly the same scenario with Jack’s grandson who tried to diddle him out of the house to set up Valandros with Leanne. Why can’t someone be honest and decent for a change, more crims on the Street than in St Quentin. The writers seriously need to be changed if they are just going to regurgitate stories over and over again, just swapping characters. How about some witty lines huh?

Hmm. James Roache did hint in a recent interview that James Cunningham might not be as nice and polite as he seems. It's just wearying to think of yet more OTT drama and violence, especially in a storyline we've already seen so many variations of in the past. Surely it must be possible to strike a balance between a character being too nice and too nasty? Why not let James have his darker side without turning him into an out-and-out criminal with no apparent room for redemption?! Surely that would be a stronger storyline, delving into the characters and their the ever-evolving and complex family dynamics, rather than just one shocking scene after another with little or no follow-through.

Still, I suppose we should wait and see what happens before passing judgement.

These storylines are getting to be to 'EastEnders' for my taste..

It does sound like he will kinda be guilt tripped into it, the whole 'left for dead' thing is probably tabloid drivel, more than likely he just pushes Ken out of the way, and Ken falls over and pulls a face

Agree Layman, it's getting ridiculous. Why can't they just let James be an ordinary young gay guy who ISN'T camp as a row of tents?

Ridiculous...??? Corrie ...???
Surely not...

What a COMPLETELY original storyline. It's not like any other member of the Barlow family has been viciously attacked and left for dead over the past few months. Oh, wait...

I hope this spoiler is incorrect, because it sounds like a terrible storyline. A homeless charity puts pressure on James to raise money by risking his family's home?!?! It's too bizarre for words. At this rate, it will be renamed Criminal Street.

The strength of this show used to be in its writing and characters. The emphasis must be on "used to". If true, this storyline is just laughable.

This sounds really dreadful. I don't like James, he's so wooden - loathing the sickly goodie two shoes homeless shelter story as well, but fraud and leaving ken for dead isn't a good way forward. And anyway - didn't Ken and Deirdre re-mortgage up to the hilt a few years ago to pay for Tracy's legal fees?

As usual I imagine this has been hyped up completely by the press and will be a far tamer version of the story when it hits the screens. lets wait and see eh.

I wouldn't believe the tacky tabloids. They said Dennis would be first spotted sleeping on Ken's doorstep, that their apparent "feud" would re-emerge, and that Dennis would be begging Audrey to let him stay at her place - despite the fact they he doesn't have a clue who she is.

I bet we'll see a troubled James just shove or push Ken or something, knocking him unconscious - mark my words, it'll be as tame as that!

I hope this spoiler isn't accurate. It's ridiculous and so completely unnecessary.

um WHAT?!

Well, this is better than poor Ken continually being shoved into the background with such mundane lines as "Diedre..really"...or "Tracy....that's uncalled for"...or blurting out some boring headline from the newspaper. Go Ken!!Take back the street...chuck Diedre and Tracy out the door too..maybe throw a fcuk into Carla while he's at it!!

Eons ago The Carol Burnett Show did a spoof soap that at the time we thought only a joke and unimaginable. It was called "As the Stomach Turns". Congrats, Collinson. You've bring spoof to life, Corrie to its knees and me as well. This is beyond the pale. Corrie has become a dumping ground in which to exercise the ills of society rather than its happiness. It is not the lifestyles to which I refer but to the violence and the psychopathic characters. Who needs that with a cup of tea and a biscuit? -- Louise

Ah well, I suppose we should be happy that at least there's a gay character who is a villain rather than a victim in the programme...

Yes, it probably is being hyped up by the tabloids - but with the producer's encouragement. Bound to be leaking plot lines all over the place. Following tradition, look out for soap mag interviews with Ken and his grandson explaining their deepest feelings etc. Yawn! Sometimes it's easier to glance through the mags and skip the programme.

Awww. I want him to be nice and boring like his dad.

John in Cincinnati said...

Like I said, if it is true, it is getting FAR too EastEnders for my taste!

It's bringing in the ratings and that's all the producers care about. Sad but true. I can see some of the old ones leaving this year...Emily, Rita, maybe Diedre. Really..they have become just part of the props now and just stand about tossing the odd comment about the good old days and nodding sadly.

When I read the spoiler about a family member leaving Ken for dead I tssked and thought "When will Tracy get her comeupance?" Then I realized that it wasn't Tracy... isn't she enough pure evil for one family??
