Coronation Street Episode Review, Weds 2nd Dec, 7.30 & 8.30pm

With the 60th anniversary fast approaching, two of this year’s main storylines are now beginning to bear fruit. With Yasmeen in the dock, Ray faces the judgement of a different kind as his dastardly development plans are uncovered. Different situations, but Ray surely has a lot more in common with Geoff than he would ever realise. The Bistro boss’s coercive control of Faye (it's rape, really) heralds no shame for the slime ball.

As super sleuths, Sally and Abi become more enlightened about the demolition/development project, Debbie also seems to be squirming in guilt and wanting a smooth pre-press launch, she warms him about Abi. I thought Debbie was Roxy, so that’s a revelation to me! Anyway, Abi’s trip around the cobbles to rally the troops is just what we need and of course, the gang head off to the press launch, then realise Ray is on site at the cobbles. A Roy Cropper soliloquy is good, but is it as good as cold hard cash? I also wonder how Faye will fair in Ray’s downfall. Disregarding kind Craig’s apology, Faye finishes with him a sure sign of internal disgust following her boss’s rancid behaviour. A maggot in a suit indeed!  Is Ray’s middle name a nod to the iconic Alan Bradley, perhaps? Talking of bad boys, it is good to see the Gary vs Adam fight reignited. I wonder what’s to come with those two?

Audrey’s return is appreciated and we learn that she’s willing to take Ray’s cash also. That answer’s a niggling storyline question I had. Isn't she a legend though? She came in, dropped a truth bomb, and then left!

Will Brian, Cathy, and Rita sell the Kabin and its flat? I’d have loved to have been a fly on the wall in that planning meeting!

It's Yasmeen and Geoff’s trial preparation and we have a strange show opener that may be prescient or foreshadowing, I’m unsure, but Geoff certainly seems to be in high spirits. I did cringe at the (almost) musical intro to the show, was that just me? As an ex-radio DJ myself I must confess to despising that song. Anyway, I digress. Sporting a black eye, we are clearly reminded that Tim is now unable to take the stand, but at least Elaine can take his place. I’m glad Imran is holding court for Yasmeen, now the Oliver case is over. It gives the story another set of eyes to be told from, I like that.

What I’m not so keen on is flash forwarding with merging montages. I did however like the outer shot of the socially distanced jury. The attention to (pandemic) detail remains impressive. Geoff’s defence plea of Yasmeen’s alcoholism and wanton violence is devilishly good, almost believable. In contrast, we’ve waited a while for Elaine’s back story, and incarceration in a mental health facility is a good plot development indeed, it strengthens Yasmeen case so it would be good if she could take the stand. Not so, as unfortunately for Elaine, it wasn’t paranoia and it's not long before Geoff shows up on the ward. It's a familiar bad man trope, and it gives me Hillman vibes, but I did like it.

Grief can galvanise as much as it can stunt emotions, and Steve and Leanne are at opposing ends as Oliver’s funeral arrangements gather pace.  It's the fight or flight syndrome prevalent of the human condition, and the couple have been consistent in representing opposing opinions throughout this tragic issue-based story. Will Nick’s kindness reunite him with Leanne, properly? Shona’s surrogate sister act with Simon is sweet and probably a sign of her improving neurosis but is the youngster taking her friendship in the wrong way? He’s a Barlow lad, of course, he is! In mitigation, grief does warp perception, but being the son of Peter I guess we can expect it.

Some enjoyable comedy tonight too, I know how David feels, being 5’5 myself, dwarf, hobbit, elf - I’ve been called every one of them! It was a good giggle to lighten the load and Shona's ‘no filter’ perception certainly has its usefulness.

So that’s two big storylines ready for fruition. Any more ideas on what’s to come next week?

Great write-up. A lot happening at the moment in the run-up to the big finales and you got it all in. I'm hoping Tim gets suspicious enough to follow Geoff and records him going into Elaine's unit again. Alternatively, putting a spy camera in her room to catch Geoff out would be a terrific piece of poetic justice. Either way, showing the recording in court would destroy Geoff's case and he'd need to get out of town pretty quick. Maybe that's behind the spoilers we're reading about Geoff's exit.

Would a door have a lock on the inside in a psychiatric ward? Don't think so. They also have cameras in the rooms and tight security so how does Geoff have access to all areas of the hospital in his capacity bad DJ? Also, why would Elaine be at Weathy General? And why does Tim feel the need to flap his lip about everything?? Elaine has flip flopped so many times on testifying, let's just see of Imran's skills as a lawyer and Yasmeen's testimony wins the trial!

He used someone else's security pass to gain access to that section is the hospital. That's who he was in the phone to at the start of the scene

This is a general observation that has been bugging me for months, years even! Why is every floor in every room in every house or shop, made of concrete ? Well, I obviously know the answer, but then why does every cast member wear hard leather or stiletto shoes? I get really agitated by the clippity clop noises when anyone walks anywhere. Soft soled shoes are the answer. Have a listen tonight...once you’re aware of it, like it it’ll start driving you mad!!
