Coronation Street hasn't lost any of its audience

So, as a parting gift to Corrie fans, the News of the World (aka, 'The World's Greatest Newspaper') published a story saying Corrie has lost quarter of its audience since the end of May.  However, they "forgot" to mention they had taken that figure from the special week of episodes which were sandwiched in between two episodes of the hit talent show - Britain's Got Talent, which boosted the ratings.

They also seemed to neglect to mention the ratings always dip during the Summer, due to longer days, holidays and hot weather, then rise in the Winter, due to bad weather, short days and generally more people sat in front of the telly.

So, let's get some facts and figures on Corrie's ratings:
Friday, July 16th 2010 - 7.14m (33.5%)
Friday, July 8th 2011 - 7.63m (38.1%)

Wait, what's this? The ratings are the same, if not a tiny bit higher, and the audience share is marginally higher!? Don't believe everything the papers tell you.

Hilarious! Thanks for clearing that up, Chewy. I saw that tidbit somewhere earlier and did wonder. Lies and misinformation won't be missed.

Im sick of hearing how all the gay characters are ruining Corrie, it's all just sensationalist crap, designed to get people's backs and generate sales. I run a fan page for Sian Powers on twitter and have seen, first-hand, the broad demographic of people that really support Sian and her relationship with Sophie, same goes for Marcus and Sean. Having said all this, I also originally thought this the Siophie storyline would only appeal to lesbians and was surprised to see how wrong I was. I think the DM as well as other papers are also basing the articles or assumptions and false facts instead of just accepting that the times, as well as people's attitudes, have changed. (@SaveSian)

Chewy you will always stand up for Phil Collinson, I think you may be related to him. I know several people that just dont bother with Corrie any more. I only do because I am a committed fan but even I am totally fed up with the way its going. You have to admit it is rather pants lately. I wonder if they would ever axe it?

Nice bit of research there.

@Gary Manilow, the show isnt in the best place at the moment, anyone can see that, but this whole crisis thing is simply being built up by the press

I'm with Chewy on this. The show might not be enjoying it's finest hour at the moment, but the whole thing is being blown way out of proportion by the media.

Chewy, I dnt feel those figures paint the whole picture. The tram crash got up to 14million (I acknowledge, winter time and rubber kneckers dipping their toe in and all the 50th hype), the specials in BGT week got up to 10million, but I believe this was on the back of BGT rather than the specials eps being anything "special").
It is a worry that corrie has hardly kept any of the extra viewers gained either during the
50th celebrations or after BGT week.
Yes, its true figures go down during summer for all soaps, and I expect round October, November time this will rise, but it does not account for the lack in the quality at the awful quality at the mo. Most of the comments this weekend, are all similar in which characters people feel are dead wood and which storylines are boring, pathetic or worthless. (for the record I have no real opinion on Michelle Collins, to early to tell).
It used to be programmes were scheduled after corrie due its high ratings, I have posted elsewhere that I feel Corrie should take a bold step and go back to 3 eps a week. I feel this would allow for much better quality i.e. rehearsals for those actors that may need it and would release some pressure on the writers who have to devise stories and produce to what is akin to a film each week.
What do others think?
I love Corrie but don't particularly like it at the mo.

What were the ratings on July 9th? Or does that not make the point quite so effectively?

The show has not held on to the viewers brought in by the tram crash, nor any of the other sensationalist story lines that are designed to draw in the crowds. There is widespread criticism from the critics and fans plus ITV bosses are clearly worried. There is a crisis.

July 9th was World Cup, no Corrie, same with the Friday, those were the closest ratings I could get (on a Friday)

OK, thanks for the explanation. Kind of does make a bit of an excuse for last year's figures though. Corrie being shifted about and changing times would lower its ratings.

What about July 10th 2009? :p (which was 7.77m (41.6%))

Seven million is still a poor show. What happened to the days of a regular 15 million tuning in?! Corrie fans are kicking the bucket and not being replaced. Bosses think younger viewers want to see young characters but this is not necessaraly true they just want to see fully rounded ones!- Micky

Satilite TV and the internet is what happened

I think the newspaper also doesn't take into account all the Corrie lovers (and episode watchers) around the world in places such as Canada, New Zealand, Australia, etc.... If they counted us as well, Corrie's ratings would be through the roof!
