Coronation Street has had many weddings over the years but this week we witnessed one of the most weird. Bride Maria and groom Gary were married in holy wedlock in the Bistro, standing two metres apart. After they’re wed they head off to the Lake District on honeymoon leaving Adam and Sarah at odds on the street. Adam wants to forgive Sarah but only if she’ll come clean about what she feels for Gary Windass and Sarah can’t reveal the truth.
Meanwhile, lonely Daniel calls call-girl Nicky and invites her to his flat where he cooks dinner for her and asks her to wear Sinead’s cardigan. She’s taken aback by Daniel inviting her into his home and she reminds him that he’s paying for her time.
Over in the flower shop, with Eileen away in Thailand, Mary’s been given permission to open Eileen’s post. She opens a handwritten letter that claims to be from Eileen’s wayward and missing son, Todd, demanding cash be left in a bag in the park on the street. Billy, Sean and Mary get their heads together and put a bundle of paper in the park for Todd to collect. However, it isn’t Todd who turns up, it’s a young girl who admits she found Todd’s phone and his bag by the canal and thought she could rip off Eileen.
Elsewhere this week, Abi has one final chance to say farewell to her twins before their foster family take them to live in Australia. But when she’s working in the garage, an car engine falls on her and pins her to the floor. Peter Barlow hears her screams and calls for an ambulance to take her to hospital. She’s in physical pain from her injuries and mental torture over missing the twins before they were taken away for good. So when a nurse leaves a trolley full of drugs by her bedside, she nicks some morphine – just as Peter Barlow comes to visit and sees what she’s done.
Finally, Gemma and Paul celebrate their 30th birthday next week and Gemma’s arranging a birthday party for them both, but it’s to be kept a secret from Paul as a surprise. Paul can tell Gemma’s being furtive and he’s worried that she’s suffering from depression again.
And that’s just about that for this week.

Is anyone else feeling the quality of Coronation Street is starting to go down again? After a strong spring/ summer, August feels very meh to bad. The episodes don’t feel memorable and feel like a chore to watch
I agree, it's more of a force of habit than actually wanting to watch it.
I think they are struggling to work round Covid-19. It's ridiculous that they wear masks, then remove them as they enter the hospital room to visit their loved one!
I also agree that Corrie has become tedious to watch at times.
I'm particurely disappointed that Adam's and Imram's investigation of Gary is reduced to another triangle involving Sarah whose interference to help Gary get away with murder now means that Imram will never get justice for his sister.
I also found Gary 's and Maria's wedding one of the weirder ones to watch and I couldn't help but think how unfair that Gary gets to have a wedding day but Rana died on her wedding day thanks to Gary.
Seriously, do nurses in the UK leaving trolleys of drugs, including narcotics, unattended in hospital rooms? I find that very hard to believe.
If you don’t like it don’t watch it. Simple.
I think the struggle to write convincing, compelling drama within covid constraints is becoming obvious. Half the cast is missing, storylines are either forgotten or dragged out, odd pairings are being developed amongst the remaining cast and some stories/scenes are being inserted as fillers (Steve and the sausages, for instance) . It's a relief there are less episodes, and I'll stick with it till normal service resumes. It's interesting to compare the pace of stories in classic Corrie, where sometimes very little might have happened, and what might now seem to be mundane scenes were brought to life with great acting and sparkling dialogue. For instance, I could watch an entire episode set in Jim's Cafe, the rapport between Alma and Gail was wonderful, and the wit and humour second to none.
I’m not blaming the Coronavirus restrictions on Coronation Street’s recent quality drop because they did episodes with the Coronavirus restrictions and they were still really good. The only problem they had was the restrictions that they couldn’t do anything about, but now there are problems that have nothing to do with the restrictions. Take Gary and Maria’s wedding, was it really necessary? And if so, it could had been directed a lot better. The social distancing between Gary and Maria who are from the same household was too obvious and that made the wedding awkward and cringeworthy to watch. But without the restrictions, the wedding was poor because Gary and Maria haven’t been developed as a couple well, so why should we care? A trailer isn’t going to make me care. Gary’s storyline has been the biggest storyline this month and that’s what’s dragging the month down. And it doesn’t help that there have been poor decisions with other storylines. Steve’s sausage drama. Abi’s car accident. How Mary and Sean are involved with Todd’s return. Returning to Gemma’s terrible storyline.
Coronation Street has shown that they are better than this. I’m really hoping for a much better Autumn.
I'm reading these comments and nodding my head in agreement. It's not so much that covid's the problem, it's the storylines and the characters they've chosen to put at the forefront. Gary, Maria, Gemma, Sean - hardly the best of the bunch are they?
Gary's story is dull because the characters and relationships involved are bland, anything with Gemma is a write-off imo, Daniel's story is a snoozefest, and this Abi stuff got off to a bad start with that ridiculous stunt!
Is this the best Corrie can do? It feels lazy at best.
Introduce some fresh storylines, give us some two-handers, it's the perfect time to do it, and please give us more of the characters we actually tune in to watch (Jenny, Carla, Peter, Tracy etc).
