The Week In Classic Corrie

MONDAY - Episodes originally broadcast 21st and 24th June 1996

Mike's factory got an inspection from Stephen, and he was not happy.  He said the work they'd done was poor quality and threatened to withdraw the contract, which would wreck the entire business.  Depressed that she might lose her job, Tricia got drunk in the pub, and when Stephen came in she bellowed abuse at him.  Terry escorted her from the Rovers and took her home... and the inevitable happened.  Terry needed the distraction because he was annoyed that Vera and Jack had invested their entire inheritance in the Rovers and not left any cash left over for him.  He also made a pass at Raquel, and when she turned him down, he told Vera they should get rid of her because she only worked lunchtimes.  Stupidly Vera agreed and fired her.  Things then got worse for Raquel when Fiona refused to let her advertise her aromatherapy because her advertising poster looked like it had been painted by a four year old.  Josie and Don were miserable because they'd bought a pup with the garage, with Don being especially angry because he blamed Josie for the whole mess in the first place.  He got even angrier when he realised she'd approved the replacement of some equipment, thinking they couldn't afford it, and when they rowed Josie realised she'd had enough and left.  And Alf got an honour from the Council: Mayfield Court was going to be named after him.  Lily Dempsey (a character clearly created to replace the indisposed Phyllis Pearce - she even swept up in the cafe at one point) joined up with Percy to stop it from happening.

TUESDAY - Episodes originally broadcast 26th and 28th June 1996

Having realised there was no cash to be had from Jack and Vera, Terry called on the Hortons and offered to sell Tommy back to them for ten thousand pounds.  They agreed on the condition that it was made legal, making him sign a contract handing the boy over to them.  The Duckworths didn't know anything about it until Doreen Horton turned up and told them they could visit Tommy any time they wanted.  Distraught, Vera threw away Terry's photo and changed her will to cut him out.  It left Tricia upset because she thought she had a future with Terry - although little did she know she was already tied to him forever.  Josie returned to fetch her things from an embittered Don; he told her he'd give her the money she'd invested in the garage, though how was another matter.  It did create a problem for Kevin though because Don couldn't sign his paycheque without Josie's authorisation. Stephen approved the order, so hopefully we'll never see his boring face again.  Mike and Alma celebrated with champagne.  Raquel, meanwhile, moved her aromatherapy business into the front room, leaving Curly squatting on the stairs while she gave Judy a massage.

WEDNESDAY - Episodes originally broadcast 1st and 3rd July 1996

With a load of reject sportswear left on his hands, Mike took on a stall at the local market, and soon turned into a real Del Boy, bellowing at passers by and doing the full Cockney Geezer act.  It was quite sweet really.  The pensioners at Mayfield Court organised a protest against the name change, much to Alf's embarrassment.  The protest descended into violence when someone lobbed an egg at Audrey and ruined her glam suit.  Outrageous.  There was sadness for the McDonalds, as Jim's mum died (though Liz refused to go to the funeral) and Steve got divorce papers from Vicky.  Fiona visited him and felt sorry for him, though she still persisted in keeping her visits secret from Tony, which got him suspicious.  Don finally paid Kevin - and confessed Josie had left - but it wasn't enough to stop the Websters worrying the place was going under.

THURSDAY - Episodes originally broadcast 5th and 8th July 1996

Ken decided he was going to have to let Kelly go, because he couldn't afford a live-in nanny any more.  A nation shrugged at the loss of such a nothing character.  Tony found out that Fiona was visiting Steve and dumped her.  Maxine tried to bring them back together but Fiona told her to butt out.  Far more pressing for Tony was a new business proposal.  Don offered Josie's half of the garage to Kevin, but he declined, so Tony offered to buy it with his dad's money.  Don obviously jumped at the chance.  Sally was horrified to learn Kev had declined the deal without even consulting her, and told him she wanted more out of life.  The seeds of the social climber we know and fear were sown here.  Percy was uncomfortable about the aggravated protest, though Lily was unrepentant.  She rowed with Audrey in the Kabin and appeared on local TV.  Since the feelings were running so high, the Town Hall changed their mind and decided to rename a street after Alf instead.  He picked Coronation Street...

FRIDAY - Episode originally broadcast 10th July 1996

Tony told Don that his dad had looked at the books and didn't want to be involved in the business.  Being the nasty bit of goods that he is, Don exploded at Tony.  Tony stormed out of the job leaving them a mechanic down.  Meanwhile Sally decided to get her own job and became a trainee at Mike's factory, leaving Kelly as a childminder for Rosie and Sophie, which annoyed Kevin.  Mike rightly told Sally that he suspected she'd be trouble.  Steve thought that now Fiona was single she'd fall into his jailbird arms but she told him she wouldn't visit any more.  The planning committee agreed in principle to rename Coronation Street.  Of course, Audrey couldn't keep her mouth shut, and let it slip to a shocked Emily and Rita.

The conspicuous absence of Phyllis is really quite upsetting to @merseytart.

Classic Corrie is on ITV3 every day from 14:50 and is available on the ITV Hub.
