Atrocious apostrophes on Coronation Street

Call me a pedant, call me picky but I couldn't help noticing some awful apostrophe usage on Monday night's first episode of Coronation Street. A couple had been subject to a kidnap ordeal and so there should have been an apostrophe in the Weatherfield Gazette headline.

Maybe somebody realised the error when producing the banner for the billboard later on and tried to correct it but they got it wrong too as there was only one couple so the apostrophe should have gone before the 's'. I'm surprised that Norris didn't go on a rant about the state of journalism and grammar nowadays as he's just the sort of person I would expect to be a member of the Apostrophe Protection Society.

Excellent to read a post bemoaning the loss of such standards!

Shoddy work by the designers. Tsk.

And what kind of cheapo font is that?!

The whole front page of the paper looks more like a p*sstake than a real newspaper!

(Sorry - I'm a bit of a pedant too.... :D)

I thought it was joke, like Websters' (sic) Auto Centre.

It just shows the decline in the command of the English Language and general literacy skills over the past few years, I blame text speak. Websters' garage could be correct though if it means Sally and Kev's garage.

The Websters' sign is correct as both Sally and Kevin owned the garage when it was set up and Sally made Kevin change the title from Webster's autos (meaning one Webster owned it) to Websters' autos (meaning two or more) which is correct. That's why "Couples' Nightmare" is wrong as there was only one couple, it should have been "Couple's Nightmare". I'll get me coat.

Pedantic point: they are the family Webster so the ' is in the wrong place. You would say: "This is Mr and Mrs Smith's house", not "Mr and Mrs Smiths' house". Although Sally making him change it was funny.

I've just noticed that in the June 20th episode (on RT website) there is a credit in the cast list for "sign writer" - so maybe Norris points out his mistake to him then (grin).

It is Mr & Mrs Smith's house but it is also the Smiths' house (the house of the Smiths).

Saw this on the corrie imdb board of what the next headline should be:

"FUZZ WHIZZ FIZZ TO PRIS: QUIZ HER ON FISH STIFF BIZ"

Sheer brilliance.
