Save 'R Rita!
With the tram crash fast approaching ('scuse the the pun), fans are begining to worry that Rita will be in mortal danger, so, here at the Coronation Street Blog, we have decided to start the "Save 'R Rita" campaign! Because without her, who would keep Norris under control? Who would act as grandma to the street's young ones? Save 'R Rita!

100% behind you Chewy. SURELY they can't just bump Rita off willy nilly in the tram crash? that would be scraping the bottom of the ideas barrel and then some. No. If she HAS to leave - and here's hoping she doesn't - it HAS to be in style with a Really Big Sendoff.
Such as - making a comeback as a nightclub singer, and electrocuting herself on the microphone stand and going out in a blaze of glory.
Or perhaps just retiring quietly to a nice cottage in the Lake district.
You know what? I wouldn't mind seeing her disappear under the tram. This is a major disaster in a landmark time for the show. Killing off a legendary character would really help hit home the magnitude of the disaster. Rita is a great character but as the death of Jack showed last week, sometimes dying can make you even more of a legend. Better to go out in style.
Surely it is 'R RITA as the missing letters are before the R: OUR RITA.
Seapenguin, I love your microphone idea!
Very good point anomymous!
Merseytart, I take your point re. this being a landmark time for corrie, but - although tragic - getting spammed under a tram is NOT - in my view - a stylish exit. For one thing, others are involved. As a Corrie legend, 'R Rita merits a proper, fully-considered exit storyline of her own and a ten hanky death scene.
And by the way - do you think Danny-K might see his way clear to doing us a job lot of anoraks with Save'R Rita on the back ;))
If she must die in the tram crash, her death scene must be big enough to distinguish it from the other deaths, and mut be memorable, still, I hope she survives
Yes, I should have clarified, I too very much hope that she survives and stays on in Corrie for as long as she feels she wants to.
I agree seapenguin that it would be good for her to have a more "notable" exit. But I want the tram crash to really hit home for the residents, and if only "peripheral" characters die, it makes it less important to me. I'm reminded of the Moldovan Massacre on Dynasty, where instead of it being "ANYONE MIGHT DIE!" it became "some unimportant minor characters died." Imagine how disappointed we'd be if the only deaths were, say, Cheryl, Mary and one of the factory workers who are never allowed to talk?
I don't think every legendary character should get an emotional, bells and whistles send off, because that's not how life is. Sometimes people just die in horrible accidents. And since Rita lives and works in the path of the tram...
Oh heavens no! Honestly, I think it would be utterly unacceptable for a stalwart like Rita to go out like that! she deserves a graceful exit - if she has to exit at all. (the Moldovan Massacre was garbage of the first water by the way - don't even go there!) To be honest, I don't like the whole tram crash/cast-slaughtering idea anyway. It sounds to me like something thought up on a drunken binge!
I think it would be more fitting if the impact of the tram dislodges Rita's hair which in turn crashes on to the cobbles. We could be left with the image of Gail lying crushed under a mass of ginger wig bits . . .
Well there are pics on Corrieblog of Barbara Knox after the crash, with bruises. So, could this mean she's saved?
I love Rita, She has been the rock of the Street since I started watching, a billion years ago!!! Who could replace her? Please if someone has to go why not Mary. I am sure the actress is a lovely person but the character gives me the CREEPS!

...can someone please paste a direct link to these pictures? I can't find them!
I hope she does go, I don't like her. And having someone big die would make it actually exciting.
Totally behind your campaign - Love Rita, she is one of the best and for her to leave under the wheels of the tram is mortifying!
I did watch the Paul o Grady interview with Barbara Knox and although I realise that most of the cast have been kept in the dark prior to this big story, she didn't give any kind of indication that she might go. Where has this rumour stemmed from?

Beth
Save 'R Rita Indeed!
I think it's because she lives and works in one of the destroyed buildings D:
