Eileen Grimshaw's new man - the secret's almost revealed

We've been wondering a lot about the secret that Eileen's new fella Paul is hiding. Apparantly, it's something that's never been done in a soap before, said Sue Cleaver, who plays Eileen. You can have a look at some of our guesses in the comments box on this blog post.

Well, we now know that Paul's married and it appears that Eileen is going to find out and then be even more shocked by his wife's response to their romance.

Tony Hirst, who plays fireman Paul told Inside Soap magazine: "Yes Paul does have a wife - but believe it or not, he's a veer solid, upright, loyal and principled bloke. He likes Eileen a lot and what's going on is much more complicated than she initially realises. Paul is actually protecting himself and protecting her feelings - well, he's attempting to. I can't tell you what's been going on, but I can tell you that Paul has been desperate for some company and affection. When he's with Eileen, it's like some sanctuary from the rest of his life - his focus is on her entirely. But the whole situation has got a little bit out of hand now. There is lots more drama to come - but I'm definitely on Paul's side."

So, Corrie fans - any more thoughts on what's going on with Eileen's new man?  Is he just after some sub-duvet comfort that his wife can't or won't provide? What? What?

Paul was Pauline

Well, I was going to say the wife has dementia - as it's supposed to be a topical story line - but I remember Mike Baldwin had dementia/Alzheimer's. It's a medical condition of some sort, I think, and Paul will never leave his wife.

It says in womans own his wife has ahlzheimers, hopefully there's more to it then that though!

Paul is two-timing jerk... if his wife is in fact ill, what happened to his marriage vow 'for better or worse'???? So it's okay for him to have an affair because his wife is ill with whatever?. Get lost!

one of those couples that wants a third person in the bedroom? or a bigamist?

I think it's a hugely unfair judgement to say that a man (or woman) whose spouse has some sort of condition that prevents them from having an intimate relationship who seeks the companionship of another while still remaining loyal to the marriage is a "two timing jerk". Heaven forbid that you should find yourself in that sort of situation; I honestly don't know how I'd judge it (or the man). You presume that his wife is incapable of consenting or being aware of his other relationship; we don't know that. What if she were suddenly in a wheelchair and never able to have sexual relations again? There are so many scenarios and unless we are in that situation, how can we really judge?

Agree with LindaSonia, what happened to loyality and faithfullness. You take your vows in sickness and in health when you get wed, it does not give you carte blanche to go off and shag other partners because your partner is poorly - sheesh what a world and what an attitude!

If the story is that his wife has dementia, then the story has been done before with Anthony Stephens in 2000/1

Maybe his wife is gay but not "out" and they each go their own way? As far as the possible dementia storyline, if she's so ill with dementia that she can't have a physical relationship, why is she still living at home and not in a hospital? Maybe it's not dementia, maybe it's some other mental incapacity and he's only married her for protection or some nonsense

I'd be inclined to agree with Anonymous at 22:04 - not the bigamist part, we had that with Arnold Swaine (sp) but could be the threesome angle.

Although who would want a twosome, never mind a threesome, with Eileen is beyond me!

Maybe Paul's wife has a terminal illness and she wants him to find someone else and to know who it is before she dies........or the theory someone else put forth, that he is a off-shoot Mormon polygamist.

His wife could have had a severe brain injury, so she may only be functioning at a very basic level, may not actually recall being married to her husband. Someone's personality can change quite profoundly with these injuries.. he may now just be her caregiver, and may miss the emotional intimacy/friendship that his wife can no longer provide?
Just a guess...

I just thought he was going to be Elsie Tanner's grandson, Paul Cheveski - Dennis' nephew !!

Love the Paul Cheveski angle - very good! Also like the idea of a polygamy angle. As for the "in sickness and health" whiners - this is a soap, save your judements and condemnation for church!

Perhaps the wide is abusive towards Paul?

If the situation has never been done in a soap before then it cannot be that his wife is ill. This was done in Eastenders when Jane met Ian, her husband was ill and died.

Whatever the story line is??? Who cares!!! The main thing is, Paul is brightening up my TV screen with his cute smile...love him!!!

Who said he has a wife? I saw him walking around a supermarket with a woman, I saw him give her a little kiss, I saw him get in the car alone. If they were married, wouldn't they return home together to put the shopping away? Why ddn't his wife get in the car with him?

If she is his wife, there must be some reason they can't have sexual relations, maybe some kind of terminal illness?
