Tyrone’s new love Kirsty is cast

The arrival of Tyrone’s new girlfriend Kirsty has been officially announced today.  There's a picture gallery here.

Kirsty Soames, played by actress Natalie Gumede, will arrive onscreen as a police officer later this year.

Phil Collinson announced the character of Kirsty on This Morning earlier this year. She'll be starting up a relationship with the unlucky-in-love Mr Dobbs, but Phil said it won't be an easy ride with all he's been through in the past year.

Speaking about her new role, Natalie said: “From the moment I read the script I knew I was going to love playing Kirsty and I can't wait to see how the story unfolds. This is a dream role for me and I'm looking forward to creating a huge storm in Weatherfield.”

I, for one, am excited to see the introduction of this character – our poor Tyrone deserves some happiness after the year he's had! Am I the only one thinking she’s the spit of the departing Cheryl, too?

Lets hope she is a nice person for a change and not yet another ad nausem "feisty" character which means, shouty, rude, chip on shoulder and generally unpleasant.

Ha, she looks way out of Tyrone's league. Quite the improvement from Molly.

She looks a bit too similar to Cheryl, to me.

Thank goodness she is a new face instead of another ex Emmerdale/East enders cast off.

Oops spoke too soon and thought it too good to be true, she was in Emmerdale as Tania someone. WHEN are we to get untried people to be given a chance. Shame on you Phil Collinson again.

Why 'shame on Collinson' if you couldn't even remember her being on Emmerdale? And are soap actors not allowed to change jobs? Ridiculous.

@Blackie Bird, it's fine to promote the chances of unknown actors - I'm all for that - but if tv followed your line of thinkking, once an actor has beenn in one show, that's it! Career over! Performers like Sarah Lancashire and Suranne Jones began their careers on Corrie and continued to build them in a succession of other roles in other shows. Similarly there are plenty of great Corrie characters who have started on other shows. You really show little understanding and even less respect for how an actor's career works. Don't forget, if it wasn't for the actors, there wouldn't BE any Corrie. Or any other drama for that matter. An actor's career is hard enough (except for the very fortunate few who catch those lucky breaks)so please don't throw up any more obstacles to their finding work.

I take your point but you are missing mine which is actors just jumping across from the 3 soaps, not coming from or going to other programmes. Suranne Jones and Sarah Lancashire weren't in Emmerdale or Enders before joining Corrie. Why cant we have a character that is new rather than someone who has already appeared in one of the 3 or 4 including Hollyoaks. Its just like a chain gang to me.

Love Natalie. Didn't know she appeared in other soaps until today. She was brilliant in Ideal. Hope the show really makes something off her character. Question. Whats the problem with doing a few episodes on other soaps? Does that not mean you have appeal? I don't get the fuss. Is that not the job of an actor, to go from show to show, movie to movie playing various characters? Think Blackie Bird has a unusual take on things.

I agree she is way out of Tyronne's league. I just hope she is a nice person, not another nagging shrew like Molly.

If we excluded actors who'd appeared in another soap, then we wouldn't have had Vicky Binns as Molly in the first place.

Why not hire an actor who's got previous experience, who may have a fan following that will bring in a few new viewers, too. I"m all for giving unknowns a break and we've had some great ones many a time (Paula Lane being one of the more recent ones). The actors audition, and if they fit the characterization that the producers have in mind, they get the job.

At the risk of sounding a bit sad here, Corrie is really the only thing I watch in TV (aw, bless!) so people having been in things before makes no difference to me, and I imagine quite a few others like me.

The thing tha annoyed me with Michelle Collins was the huge build up like it was some amazing deal, Corrie getting someone else's left overs.

I like the sound of this story line and agree with soem of the comments here, she looks way out of Tyrone's league!

And I'm with Frosty - the women on Corrie are either 'feisty' or 'superbitches', yawn. Glad Kirsty hasn't been cast in that genre - although there's time yet!

I am begining to wonder is it Phil Collinson or Phil Schofield that presents This Morning..... He's on it so much!

I'm with Frosty, hope she's not another super shouty nasty character. We could do with somebody quite normal. And doesn't she have similar stunning blue eyes like Molly?! We haven't had a policewoman since Curly's wife.... and boy, these days with people being bumped of right left and centre she's much needed :)

"Feisty" is just PR speak to get you interested. After all, if they'd said "Kirsty is a right drip who likes nothing better than soaking her feet in front of Bargain Hunt", would you be looking forward to her arrival?

Ty finally getting some. Yay
(I love Tyrone..does it show?)LOL

@Blackie Bird Surely the attraction of actors with soap experience is that they've shown they can handle the schedule and exposure? Many jobs ask for previous experience and I don't see why soaps should be any different. The turnaround is too fast to let them take many gambles on actors who aren't used to working at that pace.

Considering recent criticisms, they add a straight person.

So this new woman is going to be a police officer, huh. I wonder who she'll be investigating...

She's pretty.

Tvor said...

Yes, i was just thinking that, Dave, she is quite pretty

I agree with the comment that it's good there'll be another cop on the Street, with all the murders, thefts and fraud, this is a dangerous place! Re: the comment about it being a straight person after the recent "criticisms", they're obviously trying to do something with Tyrone's character. How ridiculous and offensive would it be to have him suddenly "turn gay" after having a really bad go of things with Molly?

I understand your point, Blackie Bird, but you must understand that there are not all that many actors in the business (despite the fact we always moan about it being an overcrowded profession). Most of us are 'jobbing actors' and the nature of our career is to go from job to job. The average length of a job is 3-4 months and then we move on. The soaps offer the biggest employment opportunities because of their massive turnover of characters (as opposed to specific limited drama series) and you can add to that Casualty, Holby & - currently one of the biggest Corrie-cross-pollenators - Waterloo Road. (When Owen first appeared in Corrie, Ian was also in Waterloo Rd at the very same time, which is slightly jarring). It's just how our business works. (Case in point - my mum's watching Holby right now, and Ann Charleston, who will ALWAYS be Madge from Neighbours just showed up! Yet Ann was a hugely respected stage actress before Neighbours. We can;t go back to the old days when appearing in a soap pretty much ended an actor's career.)
And secondly, working in front of a camera is a very specific skill - believe me, I've spent the last two days in an editing suite, cutting a short film, and the degrees of ability even among experienced actors, varies widely. One very experienced stage actor was terrible, in terms of replicating gesture & dialogue in every take. Finding young actors, near the beginning of their careers, who have the skill to work quickly & accurately, bearing in mind most will have minimal or zero camera experience, is a major discovery that producers, with tight shooting schedules, will want to grasp at. I'm ALL for giving unknowns a break, but it IS a risk ... remember, for every Tina McIntyre or Gary Windass there can be a Xin or a Lauren Wilson - remember her? Ah, blotted her out, huh? ;)
