Coronation Street Episode Review; Wednesday 18th of August 7.30 & 8.30 pm

Never usually stuck for things to say, Abi’s vulnerability in writing a victim statement says a lot about her character and how she is facing up to Seb’s tragic loss. Remembering when Brian helped Abi pass GCSE English, I think Corrie did a good job bringing Brian back to help Abi compose such an important document. Abi’s aloud reading of the statement had real resonance, a rawness of real grief, and I loved the direction as the camera moved over the handwriting. Brian was visibly moved to tears and I think we all must have come close! Those particular scenes were probably my favourite tonight, in what were two really good episodes overall!

With the truth about the fire finally out, little arsonist Hope faces up to questioning from Weatherfield Police. I was surprised not to see PC Tinker taking charge of proceedings actually. I did enjoy seeing Hope being interviewed (Corrie does Line of Duty) and having Evelyn as the appropriate adult was an inspired move. Probably a bit wrong that I only knew of that particular police procedural from a drama about Fred West, but still, ITV does do that kind of drama well. This story is also ticking along nicely. Tyrone is (understandably) stuck in the middle of fiery Fiz, crazy daughter Hope, and a grief-stricken Alina. Is the mechanic in too deep now? I’m surprised he’s not asked Kev for life advice here (classic corrie viewers will know what I mean) but I do love how this story has grown from its original ‘mid-life crisis’ trope.

Admitting that she started the fire, Hope is charged with reckless arson, and Ty and Fiz reunite their parental unit, to focus on Hope’s imminent future. Alina looks to have caught wind of this, gets uncharacteristically drunk and is clearly jealous. Tyrone tries to have a meaningful heart-to-heart with Alina, only for her to misconstrue his acclamation as a marriage proposal. Stuck in the middle? Ty appears to be trapped completely now! More drama to come through, so that’s alright.

Daniel starts his teaching job tonight and I was hoping he would sidestep Daisy’s obvious flirtations but alas, he has failed. Although he has Barlow’s brains, he has Barlow loins too and by the end of tonight’s episodes, it seems clear that Daisy’s money-mad manipulations have worked - or are they genuine? She looked quite concerned over Baby Bertie’s battery incident and having lost her little brother (thanks Jenny for the backstory reminder) maybe these two could unite in grief? Ryan is soon sidestepped and Daisy dumps him, so I wonder if he will go back to Alya? Meanwhile, Sarah gets rather broody when she and Adam babysit Bertie and it looks like the patter of tiny feet could be on the cards? I did pose this question in a recent Corrie press day to Tina O’Brien (who plays Sarah) so I’m kind of hoping I influenced something here! (ha, ha)

The promising duo of Debbie Webster and Leanne Battersby (kudos Corrie story liners for that gem) started out in earnest tonight. Going over the Bistro’s menu, the twosome immediately gelled and rode roughshod over Nick and a dodgy fish supplier. This has the potential for some classic corrie comedy and the pollock/cod gag was a good start.

Elsewhere in tonights Corrie; Sally’s parking provocation brings Mrs Metcalfe back to Weatherfield Mayor mode. More of that, please!  Also enjoyed seeing Beth back in the factory, and the girls gossiping over the working sewing machines. Tim remembered his daughter Faye is residing in prison. I wonder if Kirk is writing those letters yet for PC Tinker?

Evelyn was told she could only observe when she made a judgemental comment about stealing. AAs do more than observe. They "support, advise and assist the detained person, particularly while they are being questioned." Evelyn's comment was inappropriate but another one might have been OK. So Corrie got it half right.

Jeanie (anon): Corrie's unexpected friendships, in this Abi and Brian, are so touching. And so much much more engaging than some of the tacky romances.

I thought at first Sarah and Adam were looking after Harry in The Bistro but no, it was Bertie. So where was Harry? He's hardly mentioned and never seen.
A bit like the quads and Max and Lily!
Max has been missing from the young 'un's crew, hasn't he?
I loved Abbie and Brian, Lee-anne and Debbie. More comedy please!

I also wondered where was Harry?
It wasn't so long ago that Sarah manipulated Adam to not be a liver donor for Peter because she thought it was more' important' that he should be a stepfather to Harry and now the little tyke is all but forgotten by his mother.
With the exception of Sam,all the Platt grandchildren are forgotten.

Shannon, quads may have not been seen but they were definitely in a storyline recently with Gemma learning BSL.
