Alan Halsall interview: Tyrone's in another fine mess

Why does Tyrone tell the police it was Hope that started the fire?

Tyrone is torn, he has lost a baby with Alina which he is devastated about, but in the end all of his lies to Fiz, Evelyn and Alina have actually caught up with him and he doesn’t want to keep lying. He realises the only way out of this situation is to tell the truth.

How does he feel about the consequences of doing this?

He thinks that if he tells the truth and he is honest about Hope then she will get away with a lighter consequence, he doesn’t really think that they will come down on her heavily because she is a child. I don’t think it’s something that he really thinks through, he just knows that he has to tell the truth for the first time throughout this whole situation.

How does Tyrone feel when Fiz orders him to stay away from them? Was he expecting this reaction from her?

He knew that Fiz would be cross because Fiz was willing to go to any lengths to protect Hope. But when Fiz tells Tyrone to stay away from the whole family and the children, it cuts Tyrone deep because he feels now he has started to get on the right track and do what is right for his family again. He feels like it all comes back in his face when Fiz says that.

How important is Evelyn in this situation? Do you think it’s fair to say that she is helping Fiz and Tyrone? What are Tyrone’s thoughts on this?

I think she has very much been Team Fiz but Evelyn has probably lived this or seen this type of thing throughout her life many times over, and she probably knows exactly what Tyrone was thinking and how it would all come out in the wash. At this point, Evelyn knows that things have gone too far and that the truth needs to be told. Tyrone realises that Evelyn always has words of wisdom, spoken out of love, and that it is really important for Tyrone to have that relationship with someone who can sit him down and tell him the honest truth when he needs to hear it.

What is Tyrone’s biggest fear about Hope?

Tyrone’s biggest fear about Hope is that she may be taken away from the family, he doesn’t really think that she needs to go to prison. It is the unknown that is scaring Tyrone, he keeps thinking, ‘what are they going to do when they find out that she is like this?’ Then they break the news to Hope that she may face trial and she doesn’t really care about it, which is even more distressing to Tyrone and Fiz.

What is Tyrone’s first thought when he hears that Hope could face trial?

That is the moment that everything hits Tyrone. He thought that if he just told the police that it was Hope, that the police would go easy because she is a child. The moment he hears that she could be facing up to twelve years in prison is the moment that the severity of the situation hits home for Tyrone and he is devastated.

Does he now feel guilty that he told the police it was Hope who started the fire?

Yes, for sure. There is always those ‘if, buts and maybes.’ He thinks, 'If I hadn't told the police, would Fiz have gotten away with it?’ In that moment he feels the guilt.

How would he feel if Hope did go to trial?

Tyrone would be devastated, the last thing he wants is his little girl in a courtroom. But he also knows that Hope has got problems and Tyrone has just lost a child to this tragic accident so he feels that Hope should admit to some of it or take that onboard. However the last thing that he would want would be his little girl to go on trial.

Tyrone finds himself in another mess with Alina, what are his feelings towards her at this point?

Tyrone has gone around trying to please everyone and succeeding at that with absolutely no one. He is trying to keep Alina happy and Fiz happy and Evelyn happy and he is trying be there for Hope and he has failed at it all. He loves Alina and he is devastated that they have just lost a child but he also has so much other stuff going on in his life that he doesn’t quite know what to prioritise.

When he accidentally proposes, it's such a ‘Tyrone’ thing. What is going through his mind?

He doesn’t actually quite know what he is saying and then it turns out to be some kind of really awkward proposal! It is just Tyrone trying to keep Alina happy and not actually doing anything to make himself happy. At that moment, when he realises he is engaged, it takes him by shock more so than it does Alina because he thinks, ‘I am not actually so sure that I meant that!’ But he feels like if that can put a smile on Alina’s face then that’s her happy, then he just needs to sort out Fiz and Hope and Evelyn - he feels like he is constantly fighting fires. He thinks if the engagement smooths things over with Alina for a couple of days then it’s one thing off his mind for a bit.

Is he dreading telling Fiz and Evelyn about the engagement?

Oh for sure because every time he goes to Fiz and Evelyn with some sort of news they tell him how stupid he is. He is definitely dreading that moment. Then when he tries to explain that it wasn't really an engagement, it makes the situation even more laughable. Fiz isn’t having it and Evelyn has probably witnessed this type of thing many times throughout her life and how it all implodes and she doesn’t want that for her grandson.

How hard is it for Tyrone to be vulnerable in front of Fiz?

It’s an accumulation of things because he has tried to keep everyone happy and he has completely neglected himself. It all just gets too much for him and it all comes out. He realises that by being so emotional people will know that he’s made mistakes but at this point I don’t think he can hide anything because he has made so many mistakes that it has all just finally caught up with him.

What advice would you give Tyrone?

First and foremost, what I would say to anybody is that you can’t actually make someone happy, you can contribute to their happiness, but you can definitely make yourself happy. I would tell Tyrone that he should do a little bit more of that than trying to please everyone else and pleasing no one along the way.

Ultimately, who do you think is the better match for Tyrone? Alina, Fiz or do you think he needs to just focus on himself?

Tyrone has got a lot of soul searching to do because right now, he is clearly very conflicted again. He was conflicted about leaving Fiz for Alina and now he is conflicted about Fiz and Fiz’s happiness is hurting Tyrone. Tyrone needs to stop thinking about everybody else and start thinking about himself and what he wants. If that is Fiz again in the future then he needs to work that out before he allows someone else to work things out for him. He needs to start doing things for himself.

No mention of poor Ruby. Does no one think about her feelings and needs?

I'm also concerned about poor Ruby as she is forgotten and is being denied by Fiz seeing her father.
I think Tyrone needs to reclaim his house, throw Fiz out, end his relationship with Alina and focus on Ruby who needs to feel secure and safe in her own home.
